I'm a student here and this school isn't as bad as people think. Learning environments are good and sometimes bad it just depends on the . Schedule your in The teachers are decent but there is quite a lot of bullying but not as much as some other schools there's only one counselor but I don't trust counselors and for family engagement I wouldn't really know

This school is a joke, where to start the teachers have no clue how to control a classroom, the teachers love to give students zeros for grades and kick students out of the classroom. I have never spoken to an adult here at this school and only ever my 11-year-old. The school does not have an onsite nurse. The principal has no knowledge of anything the teachers have done when brought to his attention and he needs to look into it before answering anything. I am sorry that my child goes to this school, he has had a great school experience until Springfield.

This school has so much potential and I’m not sure if leadership knows what to do with it. The district doesn’t give as much support either. For safety, they put some things in place that are helpful in some ways. However, I don’t feel that they enforce things consistently and fairly at the school, which loses trust of both students and parents. Teaching: i’m on the fence because I have experienced some solid teachers there. However, clearly some teachers there must be related to someone because they clearly should not be in a classroom. There are some who don’t know the content well enough and some don’t know how to deal with youth. And it’s a shame because it makes the great teachers. There looks so bad. Activities.: there are so many options and opportunities for various activities for the students there. However, they don’t have the capacity to manage it. Well, the district needs to give them more funds for more support of the programs. Also, the school needs to give more funds and attention to some of the other activities more than just athletic sports activities. Like the band situation there is amazing run by one person for all grades. They are doing great things! Preparation: again, the school is short on resources. It’s a large school with so much to offer, but the district needs to support them more with more resources, especially staff. Also, both the school and the district have to be better. The bus situation is horrid in the county. And it’s consistently that way year after year while parents are trying to just get their kids to school. And the most you get in response is excuses, excuses, excuses, and unaccountability. Many of the bus issues are administrative from the county administrative office and technical issues, which still lie with the county and they just keep asking for patience. But when the children are missing one and two periods of class due to the craziness with the buses, if they run one day late because they’ve been missing class, the teachers are telling them no excuses be responsible and taking off 50% of the grade. So let me get this straight… The youth have to be accountable and responsible, but the County doesn’t. What hypocrisy! The county needs to work with the principal to make the necessary upgrades & give needed support as it won’t take much to make this a great school. And OK already… The School’s name is Springfield Middle School (4-5 yrs) now. Update online so people can find & research it !

Hello! I am a current student at Springfield Middle school, a soon to be eighth grader. I dont have many problems with the school, other than the fact the deans often pick and choose with who they discipline and I find it extremely odd. Last year, in 6th grade, one of my “chubbier” friends as you could say, got dress coded for wearing as skirt. None of us thought much of it, as getting dress coded was kinda normal at our school and in their defense, the skirt was rather short. My only problem (and my friends problem) was that our other skinnier friend had bet that if she wore a skirt around the same length that she wouldn’t get dress coded and the staff was just super weird. We all agreed, thinking she would and it would be funny, but shocker, she didn’t get dress coded. I find that so extremely weird that they will dress code certain students based on their body type when they CANNOT control that and it’s inflicting weird standards onto the girls of our school. The deans also pick and choose favorites, not dress coding certain students just because they like them. Another problem I have with the school is how the teachers will often pick favorites, or look down on certain students in my opinion. Kids who are seen as “bad” because they act out a lot aren’t given the proper attention that they need. Instead of helping these students learn and improve themselves and look into deeper reasons as to why they might be acting this way, they instead punish and ridicule them and I honestly think its just mean. They see a kid who acts out and obviously has something going on in their personal life, and instead of helping the student, they berate them.

If you want to send your child here please reconsider. This school is full of children who have no respect. The students and some staff will curse! I am currently going here and have been sexually harassed by another student. I wrote two reports and gone to the dean of students, but nothing has happened. I wrote the first report over 3 months ago!! This school does not make you a better role model. Kids at this school has inappropriately talked about and touched me and my friends. Terrible staff and terrible students. This is why I am going to a private school next year.

Overall this school was good to me socially as I befriended basically everyone there but in terms of the actual academics it was not as good because many of the teachers there did not do their jobs as teachers and often sat around and did nothing all of the time. Managed to get out with straight As the whole time but that was with almost no help from the teachers

Posted: January 29, 2020

While there is a decent amount of homework, a lot of the time it isn’t helpful to you learning anything but that’s just an opinion

Posted: January 29, 2020

A lot of the teachers there have terrible teaching skills and often sit around at their desks thinking we’ll learn everything by ourselves. Especially a teacher named mechmech

Posted: January 29, 2020

The teachers will do this for people they like

This school is amazing! I am currently on the gifted track because my teachers are moving me up so I can do a better math than what I was doing don't listen to all those other people who lie because their experience with kirby was ok

In response to the previous comments , if there is a problem with a particular elective teacher it needs to be specifically addressed with DCPS administration not unfairly broadcast anonymously on the internet. In response to the clubs comment, a total lie. This school has the following clubs actively meeting; chess club, zoology, collectible card club, video game design club, video game club, courtyard crew, yearbook club, and FLL robotics club. In regards to gifted teachers, when a teacher leaves (we had 2 teachers move) the District often replaces personnel with surplussed teachers and the gaining school has no right of refusal. We have quadrupled our gifted population the last 2 years and all teachers in gifted positions must take gifted training, this takes time. Gifted endorsed teachers "don't grow on trees" they are developed.

Thought this was the best school for my child, but 2nd year in this school is a joke. They promise electives in which the teachers don't even teach ? If you want to set a record on number of wasted hours reading books go to kirby. There are even teachers teaching gifted that never taught the subject with no background in the subject . Clubs no it's all lies just to get you in.

Posted: September 25, 2014

Very disorganized. A lot of fluff about electives, but the truth is those are for selected children only.....kids and parent choices don't seem to matter. This is the 3rd year my child has been placed in same elective. These folks talk the talk but don't walk the walk. Any question to teachers are usually met with defensive rather than helpful attitude. I understand the teachers have a rough job too....but the kids should come first. I know Kirby wanted to be a path to Paxton so maybe the gifted kids have a better experience. However, the other kids, even the bright ones, seem to be an afterthought. Currently, a few of the teachers don't even post on the grade portal. Presumably, to keep parents in the dark so we won't bother them with our concerns. Our second child, who is in gifted, is now at James Weldon and what a difference! Kirby could learn a thing or two from James Weldon about how to improve, how to better utilize current technology, how to better communicate with parents. The only reason I gave 3 stars and not 2 is because there have been a few great teachers over the past three years, but the overall school experience has been disappointing. Lots of luck!

its ok but tucking in shirts and getting detention at lunch for no id is petty and stupid

My first impression before my son attended - hmmm old school, poverty neighborhood, hmmm ... But you can't judge this "book by it's cover" - the school is great!! The teachers have been top notch - they are very attentive and approachable, they want the students to succeed and really care about each student and get them to rise to the challenge!! The gifted, AT and standard programs are great at preparing students for their next level. Many of the top graduates move on to Stanton, Paxon, RE Lee. We travel 25 miles to get to Kirby because my son loves it enough make the early long journey every day. The school has great technology electives, athletic teams, afterschool clubs and more. It's a wonderful group of kids there as I see all 960+ of them during my lunch monitor day. The school is a diamond in the rough and continues to improve and glow from the inside out. The school starting next year 2014-2015 has been granted continuity for gifted students to Stanton, Paxon, and Darnell-Cookman. I rated it a 5 knowing no school is perfect but there is no 4.5 stars choice and it's better than a 4. If your child likes the techy niche - environment they will enjoy being at Kirby.

I'm the grandmother of a Kirby student. The reviews are fantastic. I'd like to hear about the progress of my grandson and get to know his teacher. Who can I be more involved long distance?

I am a graduate of Kirby Smith and I am now a junior at Darnell Cookman High School. Kirby is an excellent school with great programs. Kirby Smith really prepared me for highschool structure with A&B schedules and rigorius academics. I can proudly say that I am an honor roll student at Darnell Cookamn, and I went to Kirby Smith Middle School. The teachers are amazing. My favorite of all time was my 8th grade LA teacher Mrs. Quantiance. I'm not sure if she still works there, but her homework load and system was the class that really prepared me for highschool. This school is amazing and I would recommend it for any on coming 6th grader.

My granddaughter goes to Kirby Smith and we are very proud of her . She does her homework each night and we are pleased with the information she is receiving from her teachers. This is a great opportunity for her.

My child attended for about 6 months because of the"technology" program. He came from Fletcher Middle School Gifted Program making straight A's. With in 2 months he was failing at Kirby Smith. But most important, the teachers could not care less.It took 2 months to get a conference because they were too busy. The whole experience was awful. He is now back at Fletcher High School in the AICE Program making A's again. I have since talked to other parents who had same experiences. They should close the school down.
