My three children went to this school. The principal grabbed my 5 year old’s arm while yelling come on to get her out of the car in the rain at 7:10am. This was her first reaction, in front of us. I can only imagine what she does to children behind closed doors. The school chief first insisted she investigate herself when I emailed a formal complaint. Then, I added other school board staff. My children now have anxiety and trauma related to car line drop off and their principal. How are children supposed to learn in that type of environment? I heard another teacher yelled at a child in a manner I had never heard before. I withdrew my children. They deserve better than apparently this school can offer.

I have two children in this school. One is having an ok time and has a good teacher. My older child comes home every day complaining about how the kids bully him. We spoke with the teacher and there has been no change or engagement from the teacher in addressing the bullying. The teacher even told our kid the bullying was just a joke and they weren't trying to be hurtful. I don't want to give specifics because this school has a reputation of retribution on students with parents who rock the boat; but he was being bullied and the teacher should have taken action. Now my child is scared to even address it because the "teachers are scary".

The don’t teach they train and are very mean to biracial children.

Posted: July 28, 2020

They give homework just to give there is no reason for it.

Posted: July 28, 2020

Common core is bad, so when your son ask for help shouldn’t they help the student? They don’t.

Posted: July 28, 2020

They are trying to find ways to make themselves look good by putting down your child

The school is only as the leader.. If the pricipal display an unprofessional and disrespectful behavior her staff will follow her foot steps or be fearful of retaliation.

Posted: March 3, 2020

There needs to be more diversity in the school... in order for the school to be effective

Posted: March 3, 2020

The principal has no integrity, promotes the same unprofessional behavior with her staff and faculty...

Posted: March 3, 2020

Remove the toxic leader who has no integrity , promotes a hostile and toxic environment .. Encourage unfair treatment with minority parents and students

Posted: March 3, 2020

The pricipal needs to retire sometimes complacent behavior place blinders over eyes when there is a need for positive change and fair equality...

Posted: March 3, 2020

The pricipal is a bully, itnis impossible for the school to have an effective anti bully program...

Academically the kids excel because the teachers teach to test. Sometimes students aren't given recess because the teachers are too lazy to go outside. If your child is academically delayed they will be treated different. The school during election had the kids come to school in the color that represented what candidate they were voting for. They had them outside pretending to vote. The news captured 3 students in blue and the whole school In red. I can't imagine how those three students must have felt having to justify to so many other studentd why they were voting for their candidate. Anyhow, all the staff in the office have each there back. The assistant Principal runs the school. The Principal sits in her office with a free paycheck. Test scores are great but anything outside of that you will have to teach on your own. And the school is well connected with the district so good luck with complaints.

Teachers send the students home with homework but calls it something different. Overall if has to be returned its homework

Posted: August 9, 2017

They teach to test. Bottom line. Your kid has no option but to excel or be left behind or not be favorable around teachers.

I've been impressed with the curriculum thus far and my child is thriving with the challenges. The school itself is a somewhat older facility but its kept clean and is a safe and secure environment for the children. Drop off and pick up is ran very smooth even though it seems like its a near impossible location for this to be true. Overall, I'm happy with the activities provided to involve family throughout the year and can't really ask for more.

Depends on the teacher...Out of 6 -7 teachers we've had, about 3 of them have been really good. The other ones seem to have a lackadaisical attitude.

Posted: December 9, 2015

The school has gone to a "no homework" policy. We only have spelling/vocabulary words to study.

Posted: December 9, 2015

There is no leadership at this school. I've tried reaching out to the district, but their interest is insincere and only pretend to want to help.

Posted: December 9, 2015

Unless your child is an exceptional student, this school will ignore whatever needs your child has. All that matters are state test scores and getting ready for those state test.

Posted: August 4, 2015

The school is large, many grades have four sections. Yet when I walk in, the staff knows who I am and who my children are. The staff is caring, energetic, and professional. The principal is incredible, it is one of the most sought after teaching positions in the district. The previous complaints are not fair, as they address issues with the state standards and the common core that you will see in any elementary school these days. The teachers at Mathews do not just "teach to the test," they are not just concerned with AR points, the staff care about the kids and push them to their best. Not only does the school have some of the highest test scores in the county, they know your child, they work with your child, and most importantly, they are invested in your child.

Teamwork, attention to detail, accessibility and fabulous teachers!! Sorry we have to leave !!
Go Tigers!!!!

We have gone to the school from pre-K to third right now. There are some really good teachers and there are not so good teachers. If you have a child that's not a straight A students then you're not going to like Matthews. Their special ad department is horrible!!! The principle is not on board. All they care about her their test scores. Like I said there are some very good teachers but there's quite a few bad ones and the principle doesn't seem to do anything about them.

This school provides terrible learning environment. Instead of teaching kids with wisdom and patience, teachers are only focused in meeting their own goals (i.e. test scores, #of books read). There is absolutely no communication between parents and teachers. The principal is lazy and clueless as to what her role is at the school. The school spends way too much time and energy preparing for the standardized test. That's the only reason the ratings are good for this school. If you want your child to learn to live learning and be happy being a child, this isn't a school for tour family.

I love this school I just wish they would work harder to get families involved. Like have more family friendly functions.

I have two children at Mathews and so far so good. My daughter's third grade teacher was more than excellent and I wish she could have her for 4th and 5th grade as well. She was very involved, very informative, she has helped my daughter develop a love for reading. I must say I think she is the best teacher that my either of my children have had in the sense of parent/teacher involvement and me being able to personally see my children thrive from learning. I know everyone has a different ethic or style of teaching, but this teacher was more than above average. I wish both my children were challenged more this year like last year. The principal seems to be very involved and is well liked. I do wish there were more extra-curricular activities for the students like basketball, softball, band, music, art , dance, pottery etc., instead of just drama kids one day a week.

The teachers, faculty, and staff really care about each and every child. I have had a great experience with every year that my son has attended the school. He has been there since he started attending in kindergarden. Thank You everyone that works there all these years.

The teachers at this school are GREAT! Both my kids have gone to Mathews and both have loved everyone there. Parents are incouraged to be involved and PTA is always working to make the school better.
