My child attended this school, and unfortunately our experience was marked by poor communication, limited transparency, and disappointing academic rigor.
Communication was inconsistent throughout our time there. It wasnt until our second year at AIS that the school began sending biweekly newsletters, and even then, parents had very limited visibility into what students were learning. Aside from occasional portfolio samples, there was little opportunity to review student work, understand academic expectations, or meaningfully track academic progress throughout the year.
They place a heavy emphasis on play-based learning and the use of manipulatives. While these methods have their place, I found they were often used to justify a lack of academic accountability. Too often, concerns about academic progress were met with explanations about philosophy rather than evidence of results. Many families ultimately sought outside tutoring because their children were not receiving the academic foundation they expected.
Another concern was the amount of instructional time devoted to the second-language immersion program. Students spend years learning in a second language, yet many are not conversational by the end of primary school (5th grade). Given the significant time commitment, the results did not appear to justify the tradeoff in foundational academic instruction.
Some of the faculty and administration was difficult to work with. Parents frequently had to follow up repeatedly to receive answers or action. Concerns were often met with committees and extended periods of brainstorming that produced little meaningful change. The school regularly cited research and educational theories to defend its approach, but our experience did not reflect the academic outcomes those theories were intended to produce.
The school deserves credit for its cultural diversity, which is its strongest attributes. Students are exposed to a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds, and that is valuable. However, diversity cannot compensate for weak communication, limited transparency, and significant academic shortcomings.
Ultimately, I would not choose this school again, especially for the primary grades. Families considering enrollment should look beyond the marketing and ask detailed questions.

We have had 3 children at the school since 2019 and couldn't be happier. Our son is about to graduate and his IB experience and education has put him at a huge advantage with college applications. The language programs add such a valuable additional dimension to their education and the cultural exposure due to the amazing international community has been uniquely enriching. I don't know another school in Atlanta where they try so hard to be inclusive and welcoming to everyone. The teachers are dedicated to the students and the school is very supportive at all points. It is an innovative and highly creative environment where kids learn in ways the develop their whole selves. As a newer private school in Atlanta, 40 years old rather than 100, there is still a lot of building to be done which means parents and the community are needed to lean in and support the school's growth. This makes it an exciting school to be part of rather than just joining the ATL establishment. It's not perfect, no where is, but it's a great school.

The families and teachers have been wonderful, with the exception of one teacher who has no business working with young children. After several years, I have noticed an increase in cost-cutting decisions that are detrimental to the students quality of education. An amazing, dedicated teacher who truly enjoys educating children was not given tenure (ie fired), while another teacher which I referred to above that provided an overall uncomfortable and negative learning environment was. It has come to light within my parent group that our children seem to be seen as nothing more than walking dollar signs to the leadership staff making the most important decisions. The schools financials are all public record, and the head masters annual salary is nothing short of nauseating when compared to the average salary of teachers and other dedicated support staff. They constantly ask families for more money via fundraising on top of the 30k plus annual tuition. Bullying is rampant, and goes mostly unaddressed from my experience. It seems as though the children of high value donors can behave however they wish, with little to no correction or repercussions. I absolutely regret ever enrolling my child at the school, because now I have to separate him from his tight-knit friend group, as I feel a moral obligation to no longer support such a disgraceful educational institute.

If you can afford private school and are looking for an IB education then look no further! At this school EVERYONE studies the IB from age 3 onwards - not just a handful at Diploma level and that makes a big difference when it comes to the support, experience and resources needed for such a demanding program - especially for languages.
Our whole family really enjoyed the international community and made friends for life - and I believe that the global outlook AIS gave our kids really helped them access the universities and careers they wanted.

We have had the best experience with the faculty, teachers, and PO programs. My kid is not a sporty kid (although sports are huge here) and we have felt right at home thanks to all of the welcoming current students and faculty. Tons of opportunities for fun trips and activities for the kids. The classes are small, and the teachers truly are passionate about what they teach. There are tons of extracurriculars in addition to a variety of sports options, as well as opportunities for students to take after school for tutoring and get help if needed for schoolwork. The language immersion does stop during middle school, but the students can continue to take language classes to keep their chosen language skills fresh or start to learn another. Any issue of bullying or discrimination (every school has to deal with this) that I have seen/heard was dealt with very swiftly by the school. This is a multicultural, diverse school and they have zero tolerance for discrimination from students and staff. Remember, the school is an elite private school in Buckhead, so as a parent you may deal with the occasional snooty parent or two, but most of the parents are super friendly. The only opportunity for improvement for the school (from what I hear) is to try to increase staff happiness and retention, it is a collaborative environment for the parents and students, and staff should also be treated with the same respect.

The best thing about AIS are the parents and the families. The school hosts many expats and globally minded locals and I really like the parents and families. The families are not snobby for the most part and are a very dynamic and down to earth bunch. There is a fun hiking club, ski trip and many opportunities for getting together and getting involved in the international community.
My kids are only in primary (1st-5th grade), so that's where I will begin my review. I also hear the secondary school is WAY better than the primary school, but I'm hopeful the primary school can improve in coming years.
* AIS is not a highly academic school in 1st-5th grade. They do not have a structured, leveled reading program where teachers send appropriate reading books home, no handwriting learning, no spelling tests, no typing class (even though they have laptops from 4th grade). I keep hearing they will catch up academically in 6th grade, so I'm hopeful.
* There is a complete lack of engagement between parents and teachers. This lack of teacher/parent engagement seems very much on purpose and seems to be directed from leadership; the parents in primary school have not felt part of the class in any meaningful way, especially since Covid.
* Some classrooms have 23 students
* Very few students, (10% of my kids classes), take the school lunch. The school lunch is not kid friendly or inclusive of typical American fare. The lunch program is not included with tuition, so it's very expensive and an additional big cost (unlike most private schools in the area where lunch is included with tuition). This is a shame, because at most private schools, lunch is a bright spot and a real advantage. But that is not the case here, at AIS primary school.
* There is a lack of substitute teachers, so if a teacher is absent they often don't have additional support.
* The primary school uses a 'restorative justice' discipline system that seems to have kids feeling really bad about themselves. I was hoping the primary school would implement a House Point system like secondary school because a House system is fun and is all about positive reinforcement of good behavior rather than a confusing, shaming multistep program for restoring justice
* Very few spots for after school activities like Track and Field.
* The language immersion is strong in French, Spanish and German. The Chinese track is 1 hour a day and is more exposure versus acquisition.

What a horrible experience ... where do I begin. First of all, bullying is rampant. My middle school aged son, who is gay, had a terrible time with bullying. Several other gay boys in the 6th-10th grades had similar experiences. Admin's response was to sweep the issue under the rug. Academically the school is challenging for most, and programs were generally strong. The language, theatre, and music departments were extremely strong and effective. There were a few teachers across all academic disciplines who "knew their stuff." Unfortunately several fell short. This school seems to continually be under some kind of reorganization. The grounds are well maintained and the neighborhood is safe. But none of this can make up for the complete lack of understanding and treatment my son, and other boys, received during their middle school and early high school years. We left at the end of our older son's 9th grade, and younger son's 5th grade, years.

They are indifferent and dont have any approach that is child centric
Posted: November 24, 2017
My child was called dumb and they did not even bother to tell us about the incident.
Posted: November 24, 2017
Rude staff who feel because they are European they have a superior approach. They do not consider the children anything more than a number. Rude business office and the man in the business office was someone who should be fired for the way he spoke to us.

They have no concern whatsoever. For the kids development. Just a number here with indifference.

AIS is a different educational experience than all other schools in the Atlanta Area. Self reliance and individualism is taught starting in 3k...almost relentlessly. Combine this with strict adherence to admission policy with approximately 1/3 of each class native speaking parents, 1/3 mixed or non traditional US parents and add in the strongest IB program in the SE USA and you can begin to understand the uniqueness of the program. This is a school for children that are dedicated to academics and individuality and this shows in college matriculations. Last year AIS sent 19 of @100 seniors to Georgia Tech, there were separate admittances to each of the military academies and virtually every Ivy. I encourage any interested parent to compare matriculation lists with other private schools and I believe you will find there is little comparison. However, AIS does not publicize these types of facts, because unlike many of the other Atlanta private schools, AIS does not define college acceptance as the ultimate goal in educating children- they see it more as a byproduct. AIS drives to create curiosity and independent thinking in children...along with substantial drive to accomplish what one seeks to learn. This environment is not for every child and family and may even create a difficult environment for many...but this is what AIS does and they are unlikely to change.

Honesty, integrity, and fairness are integral part of the IB program at AIS. These values of being taught day in, day out and constantly reinforced by the faculty.

Our daughter has been at AIS for 7 years. Can't say enough about the institution. They keep getting better and better every year. Great leadership at the top, but more importantly, totally dedicated teaching staff who genuinely care about our children. While the reputation of the school is outstanding, in the end, what we care most is the quality of instruction - and that is definitely a positive. The international IB program prepares children perfectly for the world they're about to enter. Great school!

Our Daughter has attended this school for 10 years now. The dual language program has left her totally fluent in two languages and the IB Program has taught her to think more broadly about the subjects she is being taught. Whenever I visit the school I am always impressed by the positive interaction between students, showing respect for each other. I do not believe that any school can totally eradicate all forms of bullying but, when cases come to light they are looked into and dealt with. I know of at least one case that resulted in expulsion recently. I cannot help thinking that some of the more negative reviews are posted by parents of older students who took issue over a necessary policy that required students who drive to school to park off campus. No school is perfect in every aspect but I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this great school to families interested in the IB Program and a dual language track.

It appears that the recent 7 reviews on 9/24/15 are all written by the same 'parent' and are all similar.
Our 3 children were at AIS for past several years. We took them out of this terrible school 3 years ago due to serious bullying issues and academic and administrative slack. While I agree that all schools may have some degree of bullying issue, its the way AIS mishandles the bullying issues that is the problem. Basically, AIS does not acknowledge that there is ANY bullying problem. If you report it, they shrug it away, deny it, or blame your children. If a child is bullied and has emotional problem as a result of it, any degree of academics does not help. Academically, AIS has slacked off the curve. College counsellors all left last year to go to another school. Check out teachers' review of AIS (google it) and you will see how poorly teachers are treated at this school. Children are given preference based on how much money their parents contribute to the school. I just don't understand why someone would pay $23K per year to a school which is subpar academically, and has serious social issues as you can see in the reviews below. Thankfully, our children are at a different private school in Atlanta and are thriving well. After we left AIS and experienced the new school, we wondered why did we suffer through for so many years. What a difference we see in our children at the new school. Parents, be forewarned. Do your research.

Great teachers, very involved, they do offer free tutoring after school or during breaks.
If a student is not performing well, teachers will contact their parents to follow up. This is something not very common in all the schools!
Posted: September 24, 2015
AIS has its own policy regarding homework and teachers have to plan according to the policies. Although there are subjects that requires practice and it is necessary to leave homework in order to reinforce what they learned.
Posted: September 24, 2015
AIS is very strict regarding honesty, also the diversity of cultures teaches the kids to be fair with each other and since is an international school fairness is a major topic in it.
The school exposes the students to different programs inside and outside the US which increases the integrity of each and every student in the school.

Having 3 kids, one graduated in AIS and other in the process to graduate next year, my first daughter was in AIS back in 1997, then we had to relocate, so I can share my experience of schools in US, Latin America and Asia and I feel blessed that my younger kids came back to AIS. By far is the best multicultural environment , great IB oriented education. Certainly there is no school in the world free of bullies or who's who situations, because that is a problem coming from homes not created at schools, although knowing children being bullied in other countries and in other US private schools, I loved the warmth and welcoming of AIS.
At AIS There are great opportunities for parents to get involved, which helps to improve the quality of assistance to the students, because we the parents are the toughest supervisors a school could have. I know there are still a lot of teachers since 1997 and the school is always improving the faculty by bringing teachers from overseas , so that our kids can experience the teachings from other cultures, what makes the learning process more interesting for them.
I am proud of my kids graduating from AIS not only because the great academic curriculum but also because they are graduating with a global sense of what a multicultural society is today.

Our kid recently graduated from this school and got accepted to a great university but we would give this school an average rating and we would strongly advise any parents who look to send their children here to determine carefully. A few pros and cons from our family's own experience with the school to share with you. PROS: the school did have a great pool of teachers when our kid started there, but under the current administration, many very good teachers have left to other international schools. The language programs are as close to a fully immersion experience as it can be. For our family, we preferred the IB program over the U.S. traditional high school program. CONS: There is a so-called "e-lite" community in this school, mostly determined by social economic means so for those parents who labor their hard-work to save for their kids to attend AIS, be mindful of the social-economic peer pressure that your kids may experience at AIS. Related reason, we think, and other parents have voiced, is that the bad behaviors may not have been addressed properly to provide positive reinforcement to learning environment because either it may be a "who's who" situation with the student in question or the Admin does not want to deal with it. As other parents pointed out, if a student is not a native speaker in German, Spanish, or French languages, AIS's program would not proactively provide language help for non-native speakers of these languages so if your kids fall in this category, this may or may not be the environment. In general, the school lacks of supporting to non-native speaking students to achieve the benefits the immersion language program that such students are in. Our kid was not a native Spanish speaker and none of us speak any other language than English at home so we needed to spend significant amount of time with our kid (way lot more than we thought we would need to when we decided to invest in this kind of tuition). Amongst with other shortfalls of the school's administration and programs, my spouse had to stay home for a period of time to help our kid overcame the challenges inherited in the school's culture and practices in order to achieve the great features of the program. Similar effects could be seen in parent communities. The current Admin, the school is dominantly liberal. This influences the learning environment significantly.

The jury is still out on this school. We have a 5th and 7th grader. Its test scores were not great last year for the rising 7th graders and the enchantment starts to wear off for more parents after the 3rd grade. They have far too many teachers who are parents to the point that you wonder why so many are hired. It does not take incidents of inappropriate student behavior seriously and it does affect the learning environment. UPDATE AFTER THE 8TH GRADE GRADUATION IN 2015: So, there was a mass exodus of some of the very best students. About 15 students out of a class of 90-100 left. The administration should be asking questions about how they can keep their best students rather than driving them off. Many of them left competing schools in the Atlanta area including the well-known private schools and public schools with the reputation of being solid and helping their best students get into great colleges. AIS has administration problems and has lost many teachers.

I have gone to AIS for 9 years and I can assure everyone that it is one of the greatest experiences a child could have. Right away, not mattering in which grade you start, you are emerged in a world of many cultures. AIS being an international school gives an experience that no other school can. Being surrounded by other cultures gives you respect for others. In other reviews, many people were informed that there were many issues. I will admit that there are small situations that pop up but so does every other school. It is unfair to judge a school by small situations that may be over exaggerated. I have met many incredible people and learned not only new academic strategies, but also social strategies. This school is not a day care for your kids until they go to college. It is a preperation for life that will probably end up being a better experience than college. The accede oc standards are set high but teachers are always willing to help struggling students. We also have an incredible arts program as well as an amazing sports program at I was lucky enough to a part of. If I could give this school 10+ stars, I would. I highly recommend this school for anyone who wants their child well prepared for facing the world.

Students and teachers both empower it. If the students are helping, it means they want to fix it.

As many others have noted, AIS looks wonderful on paper. When I first toured the school in sixth grade, I got the impression that I would be able to learn a couple and languages as well as reap the benefits of high academic standards, all while being in an environment that does not tolerate bullying. Unfortunately, I am sad to write that my expectations were unrealistic. Although I did learn many new languages (and I cannot thank the teachers enough), the students were an entirely different story. I, like many other students, felt isolated from the "popular" clique that seemed to encompass three-fourths of the grade. Furthermore, the administration flat out denied that there was a bullying problem. Additionally, its academics were slightly below average, and keep in mind that I was taking very high level courses. On a more positive note, however, I did have the opportunity to work with some truly talented teachers. Educators from the Science and language departments come to mind. In summary, like all schools, AIS has its problems. If you want your child to be challenged academically as well as comfortable in a social context, I would not recommend AIS.

AIS This school sound very good on paper. However, if you are not native speaker in German, Spanish or French they will not tell you that your child needs tutor to teach your kids the language. Some of the teachers are great and very enthusiastic and some have absolutely no clue what they doing and would rather not be bothered if your child needs any special help. For example if you go to them with concerns about your students progress they will tell you to wait and keep telling you to wait. You will get a thousands emails about donations and useless information that you don't care about and none about you kids progress or problems. For that you will need schedule a meeting with teachers or find out about it at the conference that may be way too late to fix something. The administration is very unhelpful and don't really do anything. Overall my kids are okay and socially the class my daughter is in is diverse and the parents are wonderful. But ask yourself I you want to pay 20K for that plus tutoring which makes it closer to 30k? Big disappointment!

Great school! My daughter was accepted after 7 years at AIS in the top prep schools in Manhattan ( Brearley, Horace Mann, Dwight etc). Thanks to AIS! Unfortunately, we are relocating.

If you value your money and sanity, STAY AWAY from Atlanta International School. AIS not only tolerates bullying, it promotes a culture of bullying. If you want your children to go through serious bullying, this is the place to be. Per my knowledge, according to a recent school survey, 50% of children in each grade have been bullied in SS. After several yrs of AIS, we pulled out our children due to intense, prolonged bullying that remained uncontained for more than a year. Administration just does not accept there is bullying, and has no idea or inclination to stop bullying. In fact, they promote the bullies to leadership position in school because of serious nepotism. Some of the bullies are children of big donors or children whose parents work at school. They get away with anything! Headmasters are recruited every 2-4 yrs with very little US experience, leading to intense instability. Some teachers are good and some are poor. Very weak math and sciences program. SAT scores are low with poor college counseling. Socially, AIS is a very difficult school. AVOID THIS SCHOOL!

Our daughter entered this school in the 5th grade after we had been relocated to Atlanta for work. She was bullied from the start by a very mean clique of extremely rich girls. Every time we approached someone in an official capacity we were told, "Well, those girls couldn't be doing that. Their parents are fine, upstanding members of the school community." Later we found out that these parents contribute large sums to the school's annual giving campaign every year. The quality of teachers was also subpar. In 7 years at this school my daughter never had a decent teacher in either math or science. This unfortunately led to very low scores on those sections of the ACT. For the social, academic, and administrative reasons above, if you value your child's education, I would strongly encourage you to look at other private schools in Atlanta.

My family is very pleased with the level of education our children are receiving at AIS. It is a very enriching, diverse, caring and safe environment. Teachers and staff truly care for our children and our children are thriving. Families are from all parts of the city and are active in the community.

I've had two children at AIS, and it is a mixed blessing. For my oldest child it worked out well. My younger child, not as well. Their language program is great and my children each speak three languages. however, socially it is hard. In recent years we have noticed the school getting snootier and the caliber of students diminishing to the point where many are now struggling with the IB. The trimester system is a mess and the teachers are very unhappy. So there it is, your children will learn languages and work hard, but they will not enjoy the social situation. Last personal note. I agree with one of the previous comments. The French really do stick to themselves and actively shut others out. I've been to France and the people there are lovely. So it's not a French thing. Perhaps it is a French at AIS thing.

Atlanta International School was the biggest mistake I ever made in my educational career. I am presently a senior applying for college and I left AIS a year ago. The colleges DO NOT ACCEPT AIS's math as an acceptable math subject. AIS put me several grade levels behind in math. The teachers do not care about their students and the faculty attempts to justify unfair treatment by these teachers. I still hold resentment for certain subjects as a whole because of how the teachers handled it. AIS is a scam. Smart parents should do their research before sending their children there.

AIS is an amazing school. All the people there are so wonderful and positive all the time. I learnt 4 languages at the school and am native in 3. I didn't know any other than english when I started at age 4. It gives you such a wonderful experience to grow up with people from all around the world. The teacher are good at what they do and know how to teach in the right way. It hurts me to see that others have not enjoyed AIS as much as I have because it truly is fantastic. The school pushes you to be the best that you can be and builds strong students that can succeed in the real world. It is a hard school, but the people that come out of it are better because of it. Important life skills are learnt and almost everyone who leaves AIS is better because of the experiences had there. I have never heard of any bullying or bad treatment at the school and everyone should check it out! Alumni 2012

AIS This school sound very good on paper. If you are not native speaker in German, Spanish or French -- good luck... They will not tell you that you will need a tutor or nanny to teach your kids language. Some of the teachers are great and very enthusiastic and some have absolutely no clue what they doing... Some PS teachers have no special skills and knowledge at early adulation... You will get a thousands emails about donations/donations/donation and none about you kids progress or problems... For that you will need schedule a meeting with teachers or find out about it at the conference that may be way too late to fix something... Overall my kids are ok but because we do earl with them extra at home... But ask yourself I you want to pay 20K for that.. Big disappointment... Phony school!

AIS was the most precious gift my parents have ever given me. The staff and faculty at the school are absolutely exceptional and always went out of their way to make sure that I was my best academically and socially. I do not think that I would have been able to succeed in such a rigorous program as the IB without the constant support of the administration and teachers. The students were also all generally very nice and unique-being from all over the world. Anything that came close to bullying was immediately addressed by the administration to the highest degree. AIS also has a wonderful theatre program that is above par to any other high school. The language program is definitely like nothing else and has left me breezing through my language classes in university with ease. I couldn't be prouder to be an AIS alumna and I will always cherish the memories and the support I received from the school. When I break from this poor, college student status, I will without a doubt make annual donations.

My child spent 12 years at this school; we couldn't see it through financially. My child did learn how to enjoy learning ; in the pre-k thru 5th grade the teachers were awesome, although the admistration was horrible in the primary section;in middle school the "money" started to matter more and more in admission decisions and among parents cliques....including the language tracks of students and the quality of the teachers was ok for the most part; in high school there were a few ultra long term teachers who dictate the course of your student's life at the school - that is simply unacceptable. Too many parents get jobs at the school which in my view gives certain students a better treatment versus others; the school wouldn't work with us financially to allow our child to graduate there, and indeed did not release our child's transcript until all of the tuition was paid...overall very disappointed with how were were treated over well a decade of service to the school volunteering, etc :-(

Ouch! So sad to read such a negative review of what is, essentially, a great school. To the previous reviewer, I'm sorry your bullying experience wasn't resolved to your satisfaction. Sadly every school has bullying so, hopefully, your next experience will be better. Wow...no school is perfect but I have never come across a school which is more open to discussion with parents and students, and to trying to improve the way they do things. If your child is smart, verbal and highly intelligent, this could well be the school for you since AIS offers something for everyone, no matter what his/her interest or strength. As a full IB school, AIS offers a challenging level of academics and many extra curricula opportunities. The school and parents go to great lengths to welcome new students and families; I have spoken with secondary students, new to the school, who were amazed that everyone was so friendly and helpful. This school is not 'international' in name only. If your child attends AIS, they cannot help but receive an education with a global perspective.
