This is such a horrible school. They don’t understand that they have 3rd graders that can’t read because they don’t teach phonics. My son has never brought home a book to practice reading with me. They use a method called Whole Language Approach. I urge you to research this. They do not teach kids how to read but hope they will “get it” by eventually memorizing words. Chatham county in general just has really bad schools.

Both of my kids attended Port Wentworth Elementary, 2015 through 2017. Full disclosure, I was kind of nervous about this school when I initially saw its scores. I have loved this school and we're moving now and I'm kind of sad to say goodbye. The staff was awesome. I didn't meet one faculty member that I didn't like. And the principal, Dr. Wright, is amazing. Every day you will see her walking the halls hugging students and saying good morning. And I saw plenty of opportunities for involvement and efforts towards student improvement. Not to mention recognition of improvement. Give Port Wentworth a chance! :)

There are SOME wonderful teachers at this school, however, they could use more training for special needs children. They constantly lose important paperwork. If you have a child with special needs especially, stay away from this school. I have multiple children at this school and fortunately they were blessed with wonderful teachers, the teachers can only work with what they have and it doesn't seem to be much. Some of the teachers look miserable, for me, that is worrisome. Happy teacher equals happy student. The worse part is, my child, who used to love school, now hates it and does not wish to return to this school, and I will not make them. On the other hand, some of their teachers deserve medals, because they work super hard for these children.

Run for the hills with this school. If there is any other opinion take it. If not just be glad it's over after 2nd grade.

One word: HORRIBLE! A few teachers need to find other jobs because they have no patience to teach in an over crowded classroom in a shady area. My son kept getting bullied and I kept sending notes to his teacher who in return yelled at him for all the notes. She laughs in his face when he is terrified of a flying moth. My son also gets yelled at by the after school tutoring teacher because she is frustrated at his progress. Principal offered no help, so I called the board of education and have my kids transferred to another school. After that I said good riddance and thank God no one is yelling at my son anymore!!

This is our second year at PWES and we are really happy. Our kids are in 4th, 2nd, and Pre-K. Their teacher have always been able to understand their strength and their needs and to focus on each of them individually and they have gone above and beyond their duty to help them. The ESOL team is amazing and they work in great collaboration with each teacher in the school. Since last year the school has a new principal and this year a new Vice Principal. They are full of energy and ideas and are working to use every resource to give the kids the best. I've always felt welcome to have a conference whenever I had concerns and I've always felt listened and that we were working together! this school gave so much to our family. Don't look at the old building, it is just the outside appearance and anyway they are building the new school that will be ready in less than 2 years. Look at the smily faces of both students and teachers and you'll see a very happy environment.

Port Wentworth Elementary School is an old building is an understatement. The place looks like the scene of a horror movie! My child s classroom had 1 teacher and 26 students (11 of the student had English as a second language). When I said that my child would never get help, her teacher said that she did not even have the time to help the children that really needed help. I said that this means that my child is going to be left behind and her teacher told me that she would pass. My child s bus was 20 minutes late every morning and 50 minutes late every afternoon. My child went from loving school to crying every night because of this school. We had to start homeschooling her.

Port Wentworth Elementary School is an old building.....truly "old school". But, with that being said, it is an excellent elementary school in this day and age. The children are truly cared for and watched carefully as well. The book fair is a wonderful addition and actually encourages the children to read and appreciate the world around them. MOST of the teachers have been there for many years which only shows that they are happy and content with the administration at the school. That makes for a happy classroom and happier children. I would not want my granddaughter attending any other elementary school in Chatham County. Even though it is bursting at the seams with students, I have watched as each and every student got the attention that they deserve. It is a shame that more parents don't actively participate in their children's education. That is what makes any good school a great school and Port Wentworth could be great.

So far, so good! Our daughter just started her first year at Port Wentworth and seems to enjoy it. The staff seems pretty good and they have an excellent ESL program which is important as our daughter was born and raised in Scandanavia. The only complaint we have is that the school seems to make decisions at the last minute. For example we asked in May when summer school would start and were informed they still hadn't decided if they were even going to have summer school or not.

My children have been attending Port Wentworth for the last 4 years. This school is battling over-crowding, a high percentage of english as second language students, and low parental involvement. With all this to get through, the school still has excellent teachers who really care, a strong caring principal, and great academic programs. We did have one bad year with a teacher who seemed to be burnt out. Mrs. Newton, the principal, got very involved and made sure my child got the education he deserved. The teacher is no longer working at the school. Other than that,we have had some great teachers, and I am perfectly happy at the school. I will be sad to leave when my children move on to middle school. Mrs. Tyler, Mrs. Lowe, Mrs. Sample, Mrs. Walker, and Miss Edwards are ALL outstanding teachers who truly care about their students and their well-being. This school could be better, if more parents would get involved, the teachers and school cannot do it on their own. I am at the school usually once a week, doing what I can to help. That is my job as a parent. If Parents, schools, and teachers work together- ALL schools can be as wonderful as Port Wentworth Elementary.
