My daughter is in her second year at Savannah Arts Academy and her experience has been wonderful. The school is rigorous and she must work exceptionally hard. But, she is getting a terrific education. The social atmosphere is incredibly welcoming and friendly. There is no inter-student conflict. We could not be happier.

Absolutely one of the best schools in Georgia. Academically, they are known for challenging college prep. Their arts programs are top notch. They set the standard for other schools in Georgia.

These are kids who want to be here. It is not an easy school to get into, and if grades are not maintained or poor behavior is exhibited a student is asked to leave. All the students know there are 10 others waiting in the wings for his/her spot. Students accept each other for who they are. You won't find your traditional groups: jocks/cheerleaders, etc. While sports are great at this school, they aren't what determines who is "cool" and who isn't.

This is an exemplary specialty school in the region. We are newly relocated from a top-notch suburban district and this particular school rivals and in some areas exceeds that of our previous high school. The teachers are very focused, dedicated and really want to be there with the students. Great role models. The class size is significantly smaller which makes for an easier experience for the students. The only criticism I have is the overall quality of the building. This school is consistently rated in the top 10 Georgia high schools and yet the paint is peeling, the windows broken and the overall aesthetic presence of the building does not match what such a quality school deserves. The district should invest in building improvement.

If you stay I touch with the Intermezzo - the principal will review the changes with the School Council at the December or January meetings. This is exactly what parents have been asking for and he will hopefully deliver with good news. We are also excited to see how SAA and Garrison ate collaborating more and more.

just saw Legally Blonde at Savannah Arts. it was really slow, the actors shouted all their lines and the singing was off key. the girls were shrill and the boys were precious. what has happened to the school?

We disagree, quite a bit of Legally Blonde was on key. Yeah, LB has all the depth of TMZ, but Sav Arts has decided to go for empty calories rather than quality. We don't want to go through another Sav Arts re-admissions audition, so we're going to interview at Saint Andrews and go to a quality program instead.

Some parents reviews seem upset. It's true that the administration doesn't care at all about acting, but that's just the way it is. Replacing the acting kids chance to shine with yet another fluffy musical is a slap in the face to students who want to act, but they'll just have to deal with it. Honestly, we're all here really to avoid the other public schools anyway, the arts thing is just a blind. The administration's treatment of the acting program this year has totally turned my son off acting which I personally think is great. The last thing I want is for him to try an acting career (I don't want him to throw his life away as a waiter). Anything that SAA does to disillusion and discourage him from acting is fine by me. As for the rumor they're going to make nonmusical theater kids leave the school, I asked a mom in the know and she said it's not for sure yet.

If there are students who want to act why don't they get a faculty advisor and start an acting or theatre club? They could do a bunch of challenging short bare-bones plays, something besides the usual SAA pablum. The music students do concerts all the time, shouldn't the theatre students be doing plays all the time? You know, actually acting? I don't mean the Thespian Society, which has its own mission as an honor/leadership society (and about as much to do with real acting as the FBLA).

Word is going around that apparently the Theater major is being replaced by a Musical Theater major starting 2015. Vocal majors who wish to can transfer to this program. Current Theater majors will have to pass a vocal audition in Spring 2015, or they will need to return to their home high schools.

Good school, but unlike most fine arts high schools, it does not have separate Musical Theater and Theater majors. (You can see complaints about this below.) They really should have two different programs, because they're two different skill sets, two different learning curves, and two different performance vehicles. Now that the school has shifted over to be completely Musical Theater, a separate Theater track needs to be created if Savannah Arts is seriously trying to present itself as a comprehensive fine arts high school.

I find it interesting that this website allows information that is inaccurate and untrue - see the posting from June 12, 2013. For instance, one of the people reviewing the school states that students are thrown out of the school if they do not maintain their grades. Since the recent principal arrived, this practice has not occurred. In fact, students have not been thrown out of the school for failing courses for the past 8 years. A open records request was made by a citizen in Chatham County and this was found to be correct. There have been several students who have left the school on their own as a result of failing courses. Teachers have never been fired for doing their jobs. The reviewer is correct in stating the building is in bad shape. Mold, broken windows due to their age, etc. This is something the current administration is working on. However, SCCPSS Building Services has to address those issues. These concerns do not cause bad immune systems. Apparently, the reviewer didn't pay attention in biology!

Academically fine, Savannah Arts Academy is NOT the school for a student who wants to learn acting. The Theater program has been turned into an exclusively Musical Theater program. Savannah Arts Academy no longer does legitimate theater, just big schlocky musicals: all singing, all dancing, no acting of any depth. Savannah Arts Academy provides ZERO opportunity for students who are interested in serious acting: better options are Savannah Country Day's and Saint Andrews' theater programs.

I think it's interesting that the person below has a masters degree and thinks public school is free. the school rates higher because it takes only the smartest kids in the district- and if you read the comments the student discusses the poor state of the building and the high incidence of student sickness-" so do your work" - really? While most teachers at this school are fabulous there are still some major problems here that the administration continues to not address It's also interesting how so many negative comments about this school are deleted

This is an amazing school. My daughter has attended for the last two years. The teachers are terrific (with of course, a few exceptions). Its the best college prep school in the state and one of the best public schools in the nation. Its not easy to get in - have to meet academic criteria and go thru an interview process. Look it up - its ranked in the top 100 public high schools in the nation and for very good reason. My comment to the negative comment below - do your work, get help if you are struggling, attend classes and you will have great success here. It might not be to best public art schools (remember its public and free) but its one of the best overall schools for education and college prep. These students are getting an amazing education at a public school. It's rated higher than nearly every private school in the state and nation. I am a state school product with a master's degree. I can only wish I would have had an opportunity to attend a high school this good!

Savannah Arts acadamy is a complete disaster on almost every level, people who don't pass their courses are thrown out of the school and there is no room for redemption as one of my good friends was thrown out at the begining of the year. Many teachers only put in grades when there jobs are threatened and usually well after progress reports are due, and an overall lazy staff makes students suffer. The students are suffering from teachers that think they are right on, in all levels and on all subjects. A lack of bad money placement has led to broken windows and a school that can under no circumstances pass a health inspection for a teaching instituion. Overall this school has fired the teachers doing their jobs, has kept those that don't and is harmful to a students well being. They force Conformity and a lack off compassion for students can lead to unhealthy mental stress and with unhealthy working conditions, thus in turn leading to people with low immune systems. Don't attend this school unless you want to be sick with a cold all year struggling to catch up with teachers who don't care if you learn the material, because they can just throw you out to keep up their school rating.

Amazing!!!! Very academic and offers so many electives and advanced content courses. The students are well behaved and the atmosphere is unlike any other high school I have seen!

so the bottom line is most theater productions are only for theater majors, as the (european?) student says below. if your child is only interested in one branch of the arts, saa is a great choice. it will give her an excellent education both artistically and academically. however, if your child excels in more than one art form look for a school more welcoming of multi-talented students, for example savannah country day. or like the europhile student suggests, savannah childrens theater encourages children to excel in multiple interests.

First of all, Savannah Arts is a fantastic school. Here's why: Everyone gets into the school on merit. This means the students here are great: talented, focused and fun. The teachers are excellent, and they don't have to deal with discipline problems, so they can really teach. Plus, because the school draws from the whole county, not just one district, if you move within the county it's not at all a problem, which is outstanding. It's true that there are shows that only theatre majors can audition for. So far this year, we've had auditions for "Dearly Departed", "Radio Show", and "Beauty". Only theatre majors could audition for the first two. So, two out of three. I don't see what the big deal is though. Dance, music, whatever, majors aren't theatre majors, so why should they audition for theatre shows? In Europe students are pretty committed to a major by the time they're 16. What is with Americans? I've wanted to be an actor since I was a little kid. If your grand daughter really wants more theatre, she could do SCT ensemble. I've got friends there and they're great too. Or she could change major.

Savannah Arts has superb academics and passionate teachers in each of the arts majors. People should be warned, however, that Savannah Arts Academy doesn't want multitalented kids. My granddaughter is a dance major, but she also loves acting. They won't even let her try out for most plays because she's the "wrong" major. You'd think Savannah Arts Academy would want to grow their students, but they just want to pigeon-hole them.

Many teachers will not tolerate ideas that challenge their personal opinion, and many of the teachers' opinions are liberal. Suggested reading material for one class was a book written by MSNBC host Chris Matthews. No book written by those with opposing viewpoints was in the required reading. My son was in an AP class, had a perfect 100 average, participated in several extracurricular activities related to the class;, no one had as high an average, but he still did not receive the award in that class, probably because of his conservative convictions. He was not the only student to come across this attitude.
