It’s extremely competitive, with hours of homework every day—so much that my son says college was easier. He had a 4.37 GPA at Walton, but that still wasn’t enough to make the top 20%. Even so, he kept a 4.0 GPA and straight A’s all the way through grad school at Georgia Tech. He honestly thinks Walton was much harder than Georgia Tech.

Some teachers tend to require students so many homework every single day. It would make these teachers’ lives easier because they don’t need to think about efficiency and effectiveness improvements in a limited time given to each teacher for the class. These teachers are taking full advantages from students and completely ruin students personal hours with family and most importantly sleep hours. It would be highly appreciated if these teachers understand importance of sleep hours for teenagers and make more efforts on finding better balance of class and homework to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.

Very competitive school. Most teachers are great (although, there are exceptions). They do an excellent job preparing kids for college. From my experience, administration is very attentive and supportive. I am very happy we sent both of our girls to Waton High. My older is now a freshmen in Honors college in UGA, while her sister is a sophomore in Walton

Awful. Swamped with work, I have never wasted my life like this anywhere else. I have learned next to nothing and am so stressed with 5 hours of homework a night on average that I have had to sacrifice everything else in my life. I cant even clean my room right now because I usually get done with my homework at 12 am to 1:30 am, Ridiculous. The kids that go to this school are like drones. All they do is schoolwork and it is honestly worrying to see my generation grow up like this… Please, DO NOT send your kids here.

This is a fantastic school! My sons learned so much about so many subjects and had a ball with their friends all 4 years they were at Walton. Their teachers were all very good, not a bad one in the bunch!
We are so lucky to have lived in the district!

Pros:
-Great EC programs
-Some passionate teachers who are willing to go the extra mile
-Large class size w fairly diverse student body
-Nice building

Cons:
-In general an excessive amount of useless busywork (I have much less and far more meaningful work as a double major at GT than I did at Walton)
-School itself is mostly a waste (high ranking students skipped often to learn more efficiently by self-studying)
-Few caps on the # of AP classes => some toxic competition
-Haven't met anyone who would want to go back

Overall, if you don't take too many AP classes and avoid notorious teachers like the plague you'll be fine. You will undoubtedly waste alot of time w class/busywork and deal with you share of unreasonable teachers, however if you find a niche via an EC you're passionate about you can also enjoy your experience.

There is a high level of parental involvement here which helps the admin. out and also keeps them on their toes.

Perhaps this is true for those students with severe disabilities or who “look” like they are physically or mentally challenged. But for kids who “look normal”, this school woefully fails to address those needs such as milder autism, Asbergers, ADHD, etc

This county is one of the most affluent counties in the metro Atlanta area, and it shows. Bullying and cruelty run the gamut from ordinary high school cliques to downright shaming and intimidation, both through social media and in common areas. It goes unreported for the most part because kids believe either nothing will be done or it will make it worse in the long run. I’ve also heard stories of the faculty shaming students in front of the whole class as well.

Pretty good education overall. If you are a social fit or find your niche, some kids love it. The workload for high achievers is incredibly stressful, and one local counselor told me his client base is almost entirely Walton teens. Try a private school if your child has special needs-this is a charter high school and their focus is academics first, sports second and not much else.

Admin states there shouldn’t be more than 30 min. per night for each subject. The load is more like an hour per subject for six academic subjects per day on top of long-term projects and papers that must be concurrently managed.

There seem to be a handful of superstars, most are average and the rest are not interested in teaching anyone but the high achievers. Not surprising-most distributions are along a bell curve-but it’s very sad that those folks on the wrong end of the curve chose this profession.

The school has a rigorous academic honor code. However, I can say that my students were not shown much compassion from faculty or fellow students while they were there.

My mental physical and emotional health is completely ruined, although I know I'll get into a good college. Not worth it though. TO THE PARENTS OUT THERE: I know the test scores look incredible, but please think about your child's health as well. It is hard to make friends who won't ditch you for popularity, or are real friends. I know that I am a student, and you probably think I'm biased (which would be true), but I'm trying to save other kids' mental health. It is an extreme amount of pressure and an enormous workload. Sure, they will get into good colleges, but at what? The expense of four years of their lives? IT IS NOT WORTH IT.

they have an honor code. and nobody takes it seriously. everyone cheats and copies. the key is the first thing they look for online. they think the honor code will change things, but instead it just makes things worse by giving us the mindset that what we write and sign doesn't matter. A signature won't mean anything bc we all break the honor code anyways Integrity is VERY little. Cheating is common, and some years kids have even attempted to break in for test scores. However, these kids were in the STEM AMS track, an extremely vigorous track where school takes over and the pressure is incredibly immense.

In clubs, the board members in nearly all of the clubs are decided by upperclassmen BEFORE applications are in. They decide beforehand based on who is smart, but not who has good leadership skills. They also decide before hand because they just choose their friends, or their friend's sibling needs a position. That being said, for colleges (since all they see is "Latin Club president", etc. there are manyyyy clubs that provide leadership skills. However it is fake, and many students do it for college, not general interest.

Walton's reputation of being a top school is accurate, based on my son's experience in academics and sports. It is a competitive environment on both fronts. There are numerous levels of education options, many include college credit. In addition there are focused paths that guide the student in course choices to help with a particular university curriculum. The downside is that it can create an incredibly difficult workload, and the teachers have no obligation to help the student balance the load. There are a huge variety of well supported sports programs, but this doesn't guarantee a child will have that opportunity, because the school population is large, and the area has kids who have played certain sports from a young age, so it can be difficult for someone to be accepted into them. All in all, great school with its own challenges that stem from a high achievement environment.

Five stars. George Walton Comprehensive High School prepares your student for college. Beyond the academic preparation, the school provides opportunities for your student to learn about life. Seminars on how to handle pressure and stress, clubs to share your talents and time in service to others, clubs to follow your extracurricular interests. Travel opportunities through some classes further enhance the learning and performance experience. A great place for students to call "home" for four years.

I give Walton a 4/5 only because they put so much pressure on their students with hours of homework each night on top of sports, clubs, projects and having to study for tests and quizzes in multiple classes.

The homework is challenging and it counts as a good part of our grade but there are times where I have started homework before dinner and I still have to stay up until 2 or 3 in the morning to finish it.

Most of th teachers are amazing but there are a few science and math, especially chemistry, that never teach. I know way more about Brazilian jujitsu than chemistry and my peers in other classes have similar stories as well.

The only complaint I could possibly come up with is the subpar facilities. As luck would have it, a brand new state-of-the-art building is opening in time for the 2017-2018 school year. Walton is easily the top public school in Georgia and probably the entire Southeast with its stellar blend of academics and athletics. We moved to the district from out of state and the students have been nothing but welcoming to my son. Academically, he has been able to take as rigorous a curriculum as he wishes; a benefit we found at no other public school in Georgia! Overall, this school is a real winner.

Probably one of the most academically rigorous high schools in the state. Definitely the best high school in Cobb County. Hands down. Walton had 39 National Merit Scholar Semifinalists in 2016, almost half of all of the semifinalists in Cobb County, and the most of any public high school in the state. Walton also had the highest average SAT score in Cobb County. Walton offers over 30 AP classes and has excellent sports and arts programs. It's crazy that Great Schools gives it a 9 rather than a 10.

Top notch education and focus on college readiness, including better outcomes for students from lower income families than most other top high schools in the area. Walton also has the added benefit of being more diverse than some of the other top performing east cobb schools.

wow what an awful experience this has been. i have yet to meet a staff member that us completly useless. if you are not the best of the best you dont matter to them. all they do is destroy what little self esteem you have. the incentive system is a complete failure, as i have known people that have come to school with the flu and a 103 fever. they offer web help but most students dont bother because the majority of teachers do nothing. if you get a coach as a teacher you are pretty much set to fail because there is little to no teaching that actually happens in the classroom. Dont bother with the counselors as they do absolutely nothing besides pressure you into taking higher classes. walton you can do so much better. huge dissapointment, will be homeschooling kids next year. what an awful school and school system

To those who choose to denigrate Walton for lack of diversity I can only suggest "Open your eyes and look around." I attended a packed house rising 9th grader parents only orientation and saw an extremely culturally diverse audience. At lesser schools many parents don't even show up, much less to standing room only capacity. The curriculum options, staff support, external foundation (to fund class size reduction and programs unfunded by state or county) are all exceptional. This comes not only from my observations that orientation night, but from extensive conversation with parents of kids who have passed thru Walton doors into stellar collegiate experiences and rewarding careers. If such results are not satisfactory to you, and you will only be pleased by a higher percentage of certain colors of the rainbow, there are certainly other nearby schools to fill that description. Just plan to be satisfied with fewer challenges, lower achievement and ultimately a diminished opportunity for your child's success in life.

Walton High School is an okay school. It could be a bad school if you get bad teachers but if you get the right teachers you should see a successful semester ahead. Lots of families are moving away from this school because it wasn't as good as they had expected. For example, is that some teachers here aren't good at their job. They add zeros for work you have done sometimes and they get mad if you ask students questions(even though the teacher isn't talking) or other reasons to contact your parents and get mad at you. There are good things about Walton too like WEB help sessions(Take advantage and get an A in a class!). I went to my Honors Bio sessions almost every WEB and I had a 92 in the class. High school counts so let go of social media, texting and expect a ton of studying for these 4 years. Already messed up a chance of getting into a good college. If you stay, enjoy being a Walton Raider!

Walton is the best school in Cobb county by far! When I was a freshman coming to Walton from out of state I was greeted with open arms and made so many great friends. The academics are challenging but not overwhelming like others say. The teachers go above and beyond to help you get the grades you want and honestly want to see you succeed. The extracurricular activities are everywhere! There is definitely pressure to go to college but I think that is the best part because it helps students set academic goals and improve themselves as all-around students. This school is awful. You get so much homework each night that there is not enough hours in the day to finish it. It has WEB days almost every week which is just another opportunity to get more homework instead of being able to get caught up. They have incentive for finals. It is nice except people show up to school sick and the Walton plague gets passed around. The people who go there are very snobby. The school itself is disgusting. They have an agricultural program, its called the bugs. All the classrooms except for the science rooms have carpets. They are cleaned once a semester. The school is pretty dirty except when they have the SAT going on, then the halls and bathrooms are actually cleaned. The staff is more focused on painting over the writing in the bathrooms then actually cleaning them.

Our family recently downsized into a smaller, older house from where we were living out in Canton, GA so that my daughter could go to Walton. The move has been so worth it. This school's focus on developing well-rounded students was missing from our previous local high school.

I'm a senior and overall I had a great experience at Walton. Walton seems to be pretty well-known throughout Atlanta but here are some of my pros/cons about the school. Pros: AMAZING teachers (for the most part) who genuinely love teaching and are clearly not here for the paycheck; students who (again, for the most part) are well-rounded and competitive but not cutthroat (I really don't know where this misconception comes from since I'm pretty average and don't feel out-of-place attending Walton); WEB (Wednesday Enrichment Block) which gives students a couple hours every Wednesday to seek one-on-one help from teachers in any class; sports and activities (there are so many available and the student body is so active outside the classroom!!) CONS: Lack of true diversity (especially true economically - most students are from middle to upper middle class backgrounds with a few really upper class students thrown into the mix) probably doesn't match the real world outside of the East Cobb bubble; Cobb district budget cuts (some classes are larger than they used to be, although the PTA and local businesses have helped offset some of the cuts; two feeder middle schools vs.one

With so many new housing constructs in Walton being sanctioned indiscriminately and with the kid/teacher ratio already highest in East cobb, not sure if walton can be high rated anymore. New houses that are being built close to sprayberry/lassiter are being giving scoping into walton to help drive prices/taxes high, is a passing by comment heard. Its more like a railway station these days and run of the mill school.

Having had 2 children go through Walton, I'd like to offer my perspective. How Walton is viewed depends on each family's situation. Walton will not be a great fit for every child. Perhaps because of the community it serves, Walton is not geared to serve students who are unsure about whether or not they want to attend college - those students will find little support and guidance by attending the school. Rather, Walton's forte is providing college-bound students with rigorous courses and tremendous extracurricular opportunities. The school profile makes this very clear - Walton expects that all students will pursue a post-secondary education and so endeavors to provide a rigorous education that prepares student for any college. A high number of students do go on to Ivy League universities from Walton. However, I've found that the school also is a great fit for those students wanting to go to UGA, Tech, GSU or any other state universities. My youngest daughter, in fact, after going through Walton WITHOUT taking all honors/AP courses found UGA a breeze and graduated with honors. She really thrived in a peer environment where college was the norm, not the exception.

I am a senior at Walton High School. It is a thoroughly a terrible school. If you are not in all honors and AP classes, your student will be ridiculed by all their friends who are. The math curriculum does not work and the math teachers are incapable and incompetent. The band director refuses to recognize that marching band is not the students' first and only priority in life. There is one bright spot though: the science teachers are excellent.
