This school is not what the ratings seem. Here's the basic rundown.

Math: The education here is non-existent. Teachers don't teach, they simply sit there and force everyone to figure things out themselves. They will then force students to use extremely out of date programs to answer questions where the correct answer won't even be listed. Furthermore, all test scores are curved so that everyone passes. Most of my children bring home test scores that were originally anywhere from 20-40% that will then be curved to an 85-100% score depending on the average score of the rest of the class. It is that bad. If you confront the teachers about this, they will shrug it all off and act like there are no issues.

Environment: This place is a dump. It is filthy, overcrowded, smells awful, and everything is extremely out of date despite how new the school is (I believe it was built in 1996). The food is practically poison and the water is full of lead. Toilets do not work and neither do sinks.

Teachers and Administration: These teachers are grossly underpaid and it shows. They do not act like teachers, instead they act like prison guards. They care more for micromanagement and punishment, than they do the actual teaching. My son was threatened with detention for throwing away trash at lunch, my daughter given detention for using her phone to read her schedule and figure out which class to go to due to a schedule change. The administration will completely ignore you if you try to contact them, and if you manage to contact them face to face, they will deny everything and start blaming you the parent!

Conclusion: All in all this is the worst school I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of schools. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

TEACHERS:
The teachers pick favorites and embarrass the ones they don’t like. they watch bullying and go on, so they can punish the victim. They make inappropriate comments frequently.

TEACHING:
The teachers barely teach, causing the work to become confusing and leaving you with a low grade making you feel stupid and tired of working at your hardest. Math scores were low due to the fact they couldn’t teach and left out important information for the class. (they even had to have a meeting about it with parents.)

ADMIN:
The admin is very poor at their job, not sending out emails to parents when something happens and doing nothing when racism goes on. They watch on the security cameras and cherry-pick who they get trouble.

SAFETY:
Punishment doesn’t go beyond suspension or calling the cops for something major. Someone would do something unforgivable and they would get suspended, not expelled.

SPECIAL EDUCATION:
Special education is decent at this school with a buddy club to help special needs kids. But most people in the buddy club are only there to bully the special needs kids.

BULLYING:
A lot of bullying goes on in school because people come from rich families so they always get what they want and make fun of people who don’t have it. Physical bullying goes on and none of the teachers and admin really care. Being slightly different (clothing, hair, looks) from the rest of the crowd will get you bullied. Rumors spread quickly and people will exclude you.

COUNSELORS:
The counselors barely do anything but talk to you about your grades and stand around. They say they’ll keep quiet when you talk to them about stuff, but everyone ALWAYS just finds out.

Social hierarchy and cliques are a very real issue at this school. Most students are not welcoming in the slightest, and are more likely to talk about you behind your back then to actually invite you somewhere if you're not a cornerstone of their group. If you are, you're getting talked smack about and invited. There's also certain kids that everyone else goes out of their way to turn into the quiet/introverted kid. What makes them do that? Idk, but i hope you're not unlucky enough to walk in some way that makes everyone put you into the introvert/loner box. Not to mention, most kids here are wealthy and they certainly act like it, too, with how they talk about how they got a DUI like it's nothing. At least, that's how students acted when I was here. Sexual harassment was and STILL IS not an abnormal incident to occur on campus, too. Same with drugs and people running away from drug dogs.
As for mental health, the campus treats it like it's not a serious thing. The person who was principle during my sophomore year to senior year here at GBH liked to not talk well regarding mental health whenever a student took their own life, to put it lightly. Guidance counselors also don't counsel for jacksquat. They do their job like they're a drugged up mcdonalds employee faking it until they get a paycheck. Also, they are slow at changing classes, if you need to change anything. And other students will cherry pick which student's suicide to care about.
Teachers have a habit of picking favorites. They also love to sit around and do nothing, although for some of them it's inevitable because the school forces coaches to teach a class even though they don't know the material or don't want to teach the material. Teachers will say "oh well i need to grade these specific class's papers" but use that same excuse for every other class when anyone asks why they're taking so long to grade papers.
In terms of safety, it's good in an objective sense but there's a lot of shooting threats, and gossip spreads fast.

Don't let the 8/10 fool you. We moved to this school from Maryland. I have 3 children that go to this school. All of them have become introverts and completely unlike themselves. This school only cares about the students whose families have lived in the area for generations. The teachers actually bully the kids that aren't in the cool group. I overheard a teacher make a comment as I was waiting to pick up my kids "it's dead today, all the cool kids stayed home today, only the losers are here". That attitude is felt throughout the school. My son had to write an essay for his senior project that his father and reviewed before he turned it in. We thought it was a solid B. He got a 45%. When we questioned her she said it was late, yet other students had turned their work in even later and got passing grades. There is a systemic issue at this school. It revolves around popularity, influence and the honor classes. If your kids have none of these they will suffer greatly at this school.

I would not recommend this school to any parent. The punishments are too harsh and over the top. If you say one cuss word, Suspension or 3 days in detention, and don't get me started on the admins. The only way to get on the admins good side is to suck up to them even if you don't agree with them.

When a student decides to use racial remarks toward another student and it it is brought up to the head of the school, that person has no right to tell that student being victimized that she “doesn’t act on emails From senders who don’t have the courage to use their real name.” This head of school also believes the student that made the remarks did not make a threat toward the school or others. Laughable...
As long as it makes money, students will continue to be emotionally and mentally targeted of all races.

Objectives are clear to students, reasonable homework. Opportunities exist for students to go as far as they academically desire.

Special Education students are treated with respect by most students (I can't speak to staff treatment), and overall teachers are good with helping kids if they need it.

They don't have much to deal with, most kids talk about each other in private or online in a way that it doesn't really cause in-school emotional distress.

There's no doubt that the athletes at Greenbrier have great integrity, their ego's are constantly pet and they're told that they are the best. The other students however, are brushed aside.

Seagraves was a great principle, but the Admin seem to believe that no matter who you question, every student is lying. They breathe down your neck when it doesn't seem necessary and single out students.

One specific admin is quite annoying, she always assumes that you're lying and won't listen to anything else you say, but other than her the rest of the admin are really nice and considerate. Athletics are put above most other things, but it isn't really a big problem. Some teachers rely way too much on online things to do their job for them, but most teachers are very very sweet and hands-on. Pretty much a good school, but if you look at it through a magnifying glass you start to see the problems.

Terrible administration with no compassion for the students well being. Ineffective guidance counselors that do nothing to help or guide. Inordinant amount of homework on a daily basis, to include weekends. Tests/quizzes are frequently over material not covered. Lack of information and support to the parents as students near college selection time. My son is in his Junior year, and while he is an A student, it has not been an enjoyable 3 years. If I could move, I would because my younger son will start Greenbrier next year and it is heartbreaking to think about another child having to attend this school.

Drugs everywhere, teachers don't care about failing students, basically if you don't kiss up to every teacher you have here you're screwed... admins don't listen to anything students have to say, overall totally political school run by the teachers pets and parents. And teachers who don't care about anything but their paycheck

The amount of homework is ridiculous. It's almost impossible to juggle homework clubs and for some students work. Some teachers use homework as place fillers so they don't have to teach because all we are to them are pay checks and it's not right

Our family has been very frustrated and, quite frankly disappointed, by our experience with GHS. We would be more impressed if the actions of the staff lined up with the assurances coming from their mouths. Unfortunately, that has not been our experience. While several reviews said that the focus is on athletics rather than academics, our feeling is that the athletic department is the only saving grace. As a newcomer, GHS has a very difficult environment to integrate into. Our hope at this point is that our child will use this negative experience to learn and grow.

I have 4 kids and have experienced public schools and private schools in Augusta. I believe the negative reviews of this school are from those who have relocated here and have not experienced other local schools. Greenbrier does an exceptional job considering the school is soooo over crowded BECAUSE so many people like the area and the schools. Our schools and curriculum are governed by the STATE requirements and our teachers do a phenomenal job of trying to do their jobs, encourage our kids and keep the schools high ranking standards and marks!! If you are relocating to here from a state with better education funding and support, you will not be satisfied with ANY public school in this area. I however LOVE our high school and moved here because of the reputation and have NOT been disappointed! We left Richmond County and Augusta Christian Schools for this community of schools and I have and still have students in the Elementary, Middle and High School!

As a graduate student and a life time learner, Greenbrier HS has shown me that they dedicated to educating my daughter. She has tons of homework and I can tell from the material she studies every night that this school is serious. Sure there are normal teens at the school and not everyone is there to learn but the educators there are friendly and willing to support parents and students.

Having served in the military for almost 3 decades, my husband and I were thrilled to get back home and get our children back into the Greenbrier School system. We have seen many schools nationwide, and Greenbrier ranks among the top 2 of over 10 schools which they have attended. Many schools are not perfect as some would hope for, but Greenbrier teachers and staff do a great job at striving to be the best everyday. In my opinion, the sports program, AP offerings, and the wide range of electives are balanced equally with the focus on academics. My only wish is that orchestra was offered in the high school. My daughter loves playing the violin and we must go with a private tutor. Other than that, we love Greenbrier and our teenagers (16 & 15) love Greenbrier!! Keep it up Wolfpack! :)
