MIS is a great school. I have been going here for seven years, and throughout my experience I have learned how to think critically, analyze documents, problem solve, and apply concepts from the classroom to real-world problems. One plus to the small class size is the individualized relationships with the teachers, and how they are able to assess each child’s pace to make sure each kid is being challenged according to their needs. The kids are brilliant, the colleges seniors have gotten into are amazing, and the teachers are phenomenal. There are also many social, student council, and club opportunities for students. It is evident that the faculty truly care about all of their students and do whatever they can to ensure they feel safe and supported.

My daughter transferred to MIS last summer from a well-known private school in Metro Atlanta, and it was one of the best moves we could have made. At MIS, she found her tribe and started to thrive. I found that the school leadership was responsive and attentive to her needs and willing to meet to address the best ways to support my daughter as one of their many gifted learners. It is clear that the teachers are well prepared to work with gifted learners and know how to support them both academically and emotionally. MIS gave me my kid back and I can not thank them enough!

My kids love going to school here! I never have trouble convincing them to get ready to go to school in the mornings--they're always excited to go to class! The teachers here are great at developing meaningful relationships with the students and helping them succeed academically, emotionally, and socially.

Our kindergartner started his first year in public school and though normally a super happy and playful kid, started coming home sad and depressed with no energy. That was exceptionally distressing to us and we quickly learned he was just really bored at school, and bored kids get in trouble it seems. We had a sense that he was gifted so we asked MIS to help and sure enough he scored in the 95th percentile and was qualified to attend. The difference was night and day, he was immediately coming home excited about his new friends and how much he loved the content he was being taught. As parents we were also impressed with MIS because they recognized he was doing math on a 3rd grade level, but was behind on writing so they used the time other students were doing math to catch him up on hand writing... while still giving him advanced math lessons to keep him engaged. I don't know how they manage to individualize/customize to every student like that, but wow. He hasn't had any more behavioral issues now that he is in the right school, and he is already ahead of all of his peers from the previous school so its a win/win and we are happy parents. Highly recommend.

This school has been a game changer for our son. One of the best kept secrets in Atlanta. They cater to gifted and highly intelligent students, as well as those who are twice exceptional (gifted/learning disability). The yearly international trips and personal relationships that the teachers have developed with the students truly make the school a special place. Students feel seen and heard.

As a parent, my overall experience at MIS has been great. The environment is welcoming and personable. I have a child that's been there for 3 years and another for a year. My oldest has excelled both academically and socially as well as leadership development. The focus on critical thinking and problem solving has been remarkable with world like experiences through projects. The class sizes are rather small which leads to the focus of individualized learning and development for each child. The only con is sports, however I recommend getting your child involved with club sports if that interests them. Within 2 years I will have a third child begin school here and we are excited about the opportunity for continuous growth and development.

Our daughter is a 6th grader at MIS. She has attended Galloway, Schenck, and Courage schools in the Atlanta area. She’s a gifted dyslexic student and is thriving at MIS. We love the environment and energy of the school, and they are extremely supportive and offer a tailored educational experience for most students. Schedule a tour, we’d love to meet your gifted student!

Our children attended this school for several years. We liked the project-based learning model and the low student:teacher ratio. When COVID hit, the pitfalls of going a small school really came to light, with the constant shuffling of teachers due to turnover. The head of school lacks authenticity in her communication to parents.
This school boasts that they are for gifted learners, but I would say that the vast majority of students are not, especially since they don’t have any test score minimum values that they require. There is a large portion of the student population that has either ADHD or an autism spectrum disorder, which makes for many socially inappropriate behaviors that arise that the faculty are not equipped to address. And if your child is interested in any kind of athletics, this is not the place for you. Our kids were bored in PE bc most of the kids were allowed to sit out and therefore there was very little participation.

Our child has attended MIS for four years, transitioning from elementary school to middle/junior high school. MIS has been a game changer for our family and has enabled our child to be honored for her gifts and talents. The teachers are amazing and make individualizing and tailoring the curriculum to the strengths and passions of the students look easy (as a former teacher I know this is difficult). The recognition of students not just as active researchers but also problem solvers is woven into all classes and projects that are completed. The students not only get a real world applicable education but one that encourages students to look at things from a global perspective. Finally, I have never worked in nor experienced a school that so diligently provides for the social and emotional needs of the students as they grow and learn. MIS is a hidden gem, and we feel lucky to be part of the community.

I am giving this review in response to a few I read that were submitted during COVID.

I teach at MIS and have taught here for many years. Reviews speaking of teacher turnover are accurate nor do they understand our program. Because we utilize teachers for multiple levels (which allows us to provide individual schedules and attention to our students), parents may think a teacher is gone or no longer with us when in fact they are. The teachers that have left and the percentage of teachers who have left are on par with any school I have worked.

Last year was hard! HARD HARD! We had teachers quit because they did not want to be in person during the pandemic. We had parents who only wanted in a person. Those two combinations don't mix. Many schools had teachers quitting for the same reason. There is currently a teacher shortage for this very reason. MIS did the best they could last year. I think we only had one positive case in the whole school.

The teachers here care about students more than I have seen in any school. Students build amazing rapport with teachers. Teachers have a work-life balance. We are encouraged to pursue personal endeavors and celebrated those endeavors. WE are provided professional development and training based on our strengths as identified by Strengths Finders. And we can TEACH! We can go into the classroom and teach without worrying about issues that do not pertain to what is being taught in the classroom. Being here is the first time I have felt like I am respected as a professional since coming into education. We are trusted and encouraged to think outside the box rather than teaching what is in the teacher's manual.

Is this place perfect, no. No place is. We have about 40 or so faculty and staff. They each are here for their own reasons, but I think they each will tell you that know no better place to teach. This school has things to work on, but we acknowledge them and continue striving to be better.

All it takes is one visit to our school, speaking with our students and faculty, and you'll see how amazing this school is.

We came to MIS four years ago because of its pledge that "no one waits to learn."  They've kept that commitment, working with us creatively to provide challenging courses for our gifted children.  The teachers are exceptional, and exceptionally committed to engaging gifted children.  We love the diversity of the school and faculty, and we appreciate the support for social and emotional development as well as academics.  The school embraced the challenge of navigating the pandemic and our kids continue to thrive, even this year.  We hope the high school especially will keep growing, but accept that our kids peer group is smaller than at other schools as the flip side of having small classes and individual engagement from teachers.

Our experience at M.I.S has been great, my child has attended for 5 years and it feels like a home away from home. The teachers are truly invested in my daughter’s education and her growth as a well-rounded person. I love MIS because of the smaller class sizes and adjustments made as needed to meet my child’s needs. There is a strong parent association that works closely with the school and both parties are dedicated to the school’s success. Children have the opportunity to travel to great places such as France, Spain, Peru, Guatemala, and even Greenland. Younger students take trips to Savanah, Washington D.C., and other exciting cities. I’ll admit the school is only 8 years old and this year was especially challenging. There is a new head of school and there were a couple of staff changes; however, toward the middle to the end of the year, they really got their stride. It was a stressful start but I can honestly say, it ended pretty sweet.

Posted: February 11, 2021

Our family thought we would stay at MIS all the way through high school. For the most part, every teacher was wonderful and our child was very happy. However, this year there have been multiple teacher resignations in the middle of the year followed by terrible replacements or no replacements at all. They barely escaped an all out teacher strike over the lack of consistent safety protocols, lack of support, and the cutting of salaries. Our fear is that many more teachers will choose to work elsewhere next year and I can't blame them for wanting to leave. We attend the school because of the quality of the teaching staff and without that there is no reason to go to MIS. The facility is subpar. The extracurriculars are slim. And the administration sees both teachers and students as replaceable. We are sad to leave what we had hoped would be a home for our child but we will not stay at a school that treats its faculty, staff, and families as expendable commodities. What message does that behavior send to our kids?

High teacher turnover, poor administration, virtually no teacher support, lack of orientation for new teachers, poor communication from administration, and a universal lack of discipline. Prospective teachers and parents of prospective students alike should visit the school, attend various classes, and meet the admin/teachers before deciding to work at or enroll their children in this school.

Our family is going into its 4th years with MIS, and our thoughts are mixed. It's great for some kids, but not for most.
There is a high rate of teacher turnover, and as new teachers come in, they are not well supported. The lower grades also have a high percentage of kids who have challenges at other schools (ie - got kicked out). Mixing the challenging kids with unsupported new teachers made for several years of dysfunctional classroom environments for my kid.
The administration is not flexible. They have a passive-aggressive approach where they say they will work with you, but they did not. They have their specific vision, and if your kid doesn't fit it, they don't care and won't try to accommodate them. They don't need to, given with the wait lists that they have!
Ultimately, for high functioning, gifted learners who a) do not need/want structure, and b) need no more than just recreational athletic or artistic extra curricular options; this is a great school.

Bullying is not tolerated. I've heard nothing from my son in the 2 years at this school, that he or any of his peers have experienced this behavior from another student or otherwise.

Posted: October 7, 2018

Excellent! My son has grown in the 6th grade & now the 7th... Maturing in every way positively. Articulation is a great thing...at a 12/13 year age he is able to now express how he feels in general, and excitedly expresses his learning experiences each day. This is not something he was able to do before.

Posted: October 7, 2018

The teachers have displayed giving homework not as a task, but when necessary only, as they utilize the in class carefully. This has allowed my son not to dread homework, and respect the learning side when homework is assigned.

Posted: October 7, 2018

The culture at the school has allowed my son to grow as a young person. The teachers are diverse in their teaching techniques, and allow students to engage and be creative while still teaching the student how to be accountable to their learning benchmarks.

Posted: October 7, 2018

The Teachers and Leadership at the school " LEAD BY EXAMPLE". From the dialogue in the hallways to the daily behavior, including the greeting body language.

Posted: October 7, 2018

Leadership is very important. The success and culture starts with the leadership. I continue to say culture, as the leadership is warm, willingly helpful, shows sincerity, and empathy when necessary. All of this while still installing great self discipline into the young students.

The Teachers & Faculty are very accessible and communicate great!

There are many 5 star reviews of MIS so I felt obligated to give my review so there is at least more balance here. My child went here the first year the school opened when it was still in the old midtown location so I can't speak about the new facility but I found the old one very lacking (pathetic outside play area, low ceilings and tiny classrooms, gym and library). Hopefully the new one is better. Other policies may have changed also since we attended.
I really liked Ande, the director, and was very impressed with the curriculum and most of the concepts she used in her education philosophy. I think it is a little unique in the private school and I loved the global teaching style.
That's where the good ends. The school touts itself as for "gifted" students only which was ridiculous. The kids are average, including my own kid. There are also MANY kids with developmental delays/disabilities such as ADD, ADHD, language disorders and autism. I think these kids are more than capable of performing academically but there were many behavioral issues and MIS was completely clueless as to how to deal with them. There was an autistic boy in my son's class that was constantly disruptive and the school refused to take any steps to handle the situation. I think they really didn't know what to do since they had none of the tools that public schools have for this.
As another reviewer stated, I agree the school is VERY cliquish. Many of the kids feed in from Ande's 2 preschools and already know her and are friends with her. These parents and kids are clearly given preferred treatment. We left after one school year but there were 2 kids (in a class of 12) that left at winter break and I know of at least two others that left when we left. But they seemed to have absolutely no problem filling those spots extremely quickly with new students so I think this is a school that is a great fit for a lot of kids (especially kids with developmental issues that can't get into other top tier private schools like Paideia or Woodward) and their parents know they would be miserable in a large public school. Personally I do not think any of these second tier private schools are worth the money. You pay almost as much as a top tier school with much less to show for it. I'd advise visiting the school and sitting in a class before making a decision.

What a great school for gifted learners! Every day I think, "This is a school that I wish I could go to!" The teachers are enthusiastic about teaching, the students are enthusiastic about learning, and the parents are engaged, involved, and amazingly supportive - including ~90%+ annual fund participation. MIS is quickly becoming recognized in the community as a leader in gifted education. To be sure, MIS is not for every gifted student. Students must be self-motivated, willing to be stretched and challenged, and able to work with other students in a respectful way.

I am consistently blown away by the teachers' creativity and knowledge -- the science teacher was an actual scientist before teaching. Their subject matter knowledge is outstanding.

MIS philosophy on homework is that it shouldn't' be busy work and should support classroom instruction. So it generally includes reading (for novel study) or researching a question or problem. Homework rarely exceeds 30 minutes Mon-Thurs (by design).

Posted: October 15, 2015

Students meet monthly in their "character" houses (think Harry Potter) which reflect MIS' values like justice and responsibility. The school walks the walk and talks the talk in helping the whole child develop.

Posted: October 15, 2015

The best decision we ever made was putting our children int this school. I knew it when I heard Ande, the head of school, tell parents "no child waits to learn" at MIS. Unfortunately, my kids had been doing a lot of waiting at their public school and were bored.

The classes are small (12 max), the teachers are all caring and supportive and the kids are encouraged to exercise the creativity and independence (like forming student led clubs). The foreign travel adds a whole new dimension to instruction. I especially love how the curriculum is thematically connected (last year was human rights) and kids aren't learning various subjects in a vacuum and expected to make connections on their own.

My daughter just finished her second year at MIS, she started in K and just finished 1st grade. Last year was good, but this year was incredible. Ms. Snyder the first grade teacher is amazing, I could not have dreamt of a better teacher. She taught in the most creative and interesting ways. They learned addition, subtraction, geometry ( not just shapes but angle vertices), word problems, and started multiplication while playing games or taking imaginary journeys in math. My daughter was writing critical essays and Haiku poems. She studied poems by Carl Sandburg and other poets. She now knows what a metaphor and an idiom are and puts "juicy" details in her creative writing. She studied the format of writing essays as an imaginary hamburger and can write essays in the first grade.
Every week in social studies a student would pick a different country to study, they got pretty far off the beaten path and studied countries like Mali and Cambodia. In science they did experiments of all kinds and studied everything from Animals, to plants, to the environment( recycling and worm composting). My daughter now looks in the sky and tells me the cloud is a cirrus or stratus cloud and makes weather forecasts. The amazing thing about this year is that my daughter was having fun everyday and learning without realizing it. She also studied French, Spanish, and Mandarin. Mandarin is her favorite, who would have guessed. This past year was so wonderful, that I was sad to see the school year end. I saw the previous review and don't understand it. I have only met nice parents, who care deeply about their children.
My daughter is very happy and I look forward to a great year in second grade. If you want your child to have a more personalized learning experience in an enviornment that is happy and exciting MIS is for you.

I have a different opinion of this school. The kids and parents can be cliquey, which is a problem given the small class size. They were very unaccommodating to my gifted daughter with ADHD. Save your money!!!!!

Posted: July 31, 2014

Our daughter, like most of the kids MIS, was extremely bored at her "normal" school. Worksheet after worksheet- in and outside class- just repeating the same things. (She gets "it" the first time and doesn't need boring repetition). We struggled to find somewhere that would challenge her and meet her needs as a gifted child. We were fortunate to find out about MIS in time to enroll her in its 1st year (2013/14). EVERYTHING about the school has greatly exceeded our high expectations. Most significantly, our daughter is never bored & is always excited to tell us what she did and what she learned each day. In fact, she never wants to leave at the end of the day b/c she loves it, her friends, her teachers, and the many fun/engaging activities so much. Every parent we have spoken with over the past year shares a similar story. (The school will have 100 students K-7 this fall - a doubling of students from the first year). If you find yourself looking for a school for your kid that isn't just another "rigorous" (as the "normal" schools might define that word) testing / worksheet / homework / "just get it done" -driven school, then MIS just might be the perfect place for your family!

GREATEST SCHOOL EVER!! I could not agree more with EVERYTHING that the other reviews state. My child absolutely loves this school. She has told me that she wished there were 10 days in a week so she could go to school more. The teachers are simply amazing. They are warm and treat the kids with such respect. My daughter loves being challenged every day. I volunteer a good amount at the school and the children are always smiling and happy . You couldn't ask for anything more. Smart, Happy, well adjusted kids. You will not be disappointed!!

MIS is truly a unique school. My child comes home asking great questions and wanting to learn more about topics discussed during the day. The teachers are wonderfully energetic and engaging. We love this school!

There is an energy that you feel the second you step foot in the door. It is a space where children are asked to put on their individual thinking caps and come together to observe, create and build a future that they can proudly call their own. And if you were to stop any one of them on the street and ask them how they felt about Midtown International School, you'd most likely get the same response in 60+ different ways: They LOVE it! (And so do we!) Do yourself a favor and take the tour. You won't be disappointed!

I have 3 children at MIS and believe pulling them out of their previous private school was the best education decision we ve ever made. My Kindergartner loves the language classes and science lab, my 2nd Grader is learning algebra, and my 3rd Grader was explaining Braque s unique use of color last night. We couldn t be happier with their teachers -- all of the teachers have specialized certification for teaching gifted students or are currently in school finishing up programs. Class sizes are small and my kids receive a great deal of personal attention. We ve been impressed with the strong science and math curriculum, language training, and music and art classes hard to believe it, but a school this size has a dedicated reading specialist and a school counselor as well. We are very happy.

My child is a 4th grader at MIS. This year has been great. My son was becomming very bored with school and weary of the rigidity of our local school. The class sizes of public schools and the focus on testing, testing, testing, really leaves pulbic school teachers at a disadvantage. We were seeing the spark our child had for learning beginning to dim and are SO glad we found MIS. His teacher, Mr Scott, is fantastic. He is passionate about teaching, excellent with kids, fun but firm. We have time to enjoy our child at home because he is not bogged down with a bunch of homework. The kids can actually get stuff done at school since they aren't always switching classrooms and standing in lines. The curriculum is challenging and interesting to the kids. And they get a long recess every single day, as well as PE class four days a week. And it's fun PE class, not just drills! I am so excited about what the future holds at MIS.

My daughter is in Kindergarten at MIS. The school has been incredible. She is learning Mandarin, French, and Spanish. The integrated curriculum is fantastic. She is learning critical thinking, not just She actually has dedicated subject matter teachers in K that teach science, Mandarin, reading ect...along with a fabulous K teacher. The school director Ande is incredible. She has the children involved in scientific research with the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and artists visit from the High Museum to work on the school sculpture with the children. My daughter loves school, which was not the case last year at her old Buckhead preschool. I wish had gone to the International preschool last year. The class size is small, so her teacher can really individualize her students class experience building on strengths and giving extra help where your child needs it. I smile everyday thinking about how lucky we are to have found such an incredible school. I would like to say thank you to my daughters incredible teachers and to Ande for creating such a marvelous school. Bravo, Ande keep growing your vision.
