Aliamanu Middle School made an immediate difference for our family. The staff are warm, inviting, and truly welcoming. From the very first day our student was embraced and supported—turning the stress of a mid-year military move into a smooth transition. We were especially impressed with the school’s elective offerings, particularly the innovative drone class. Our interactions particularly with the principal, registrar, and military counselors were positive, professional, and reassuring. I am deeply grateful for the dedicated teachers and staff who foster a caring and supportive environment. I wish this school and its team continued success.

Phenomenal 2 years. It’s clear the faculty and staff care for each of the kids. Our daughter came from a strong out of state elementary school in advanced classes. Aliamanu didn’t miss a beat - continuing to challenge her. The school’s frequent email communication with parents was greatly appreciated as our kid is not one to bring things home. Highly recommend this school.

Our student has excelled during their time at AMS. The opportunities given, love from the staff, and whole atmosphere of the school have made middle school an amazing experience. The administration and staff works tirelessly to provide students so many new opportunities, mentoring from community adults, and the chance to learn in a safe and supportive environment.

Overall a good experience at AMS! Academically it is on par with other Hawaii middle schools and they offer a ton of extra programs for students of all different interests to be involved in. For example, robotics, mural making, music programs, amazing shake, athletics & spring break trips. What makes it stand out is it’s exceptional support to military families.
Obviously, no middle school is perfect so there are issues with vaping, general middle school shenanigans and the occasional unmotivated teacher but so far the benefits have far outweighed these issues. Middle schoolers make a lot of mistakes so I have appreciated how the administration cares for the kids and while quick to discipline they are also quick to forgive and help steer kids towards success.

This school was terrible, some of the teachers are rude and some are great but one of these teachers in particular (no names are being mentioned) has cursed these kids out in front of the whole class to hear and they don’t email us enough about assignments and is always super strict with missing assignments and stuff, and they are always super strict with the dress code for an example they say no throw on hoodies and yet the kids have an ID so it really defeats the whole purpose of buying an ID, and the Uplink program is terrible because the kids are bullying each other and it becomes annoying, and I always here that there’s some crazy fight or something really stupid that happened at school and I find that to be ridiculous. I highly don’t recommend going to this school unless you’re ok with the things that are mentioned.

Aliamanu Middle School was recommended to us by a friend who is an educator from the mainland. She had had a very positive experience with her child attending Aliamanu, and was very pleased with the faculty, staff, and educational experience. Moving from the mainland, we took her advice and could not be happier. They work tirelessly to ensure the best educational environment for their students and strive to meet individual needs. The communication between the administration and parents has been top-notch, especially while navigating the Covid 19 pandemic. They are always looking for ways to get families involved in the school, and to provide unique opportunities for the students challenge themselves. If you are moving to the area, I highly recommend looking into Aliamanu Middle School.

Aliamanu Middle has been a wonderful experience. Many opportunities for extracurricular and leadership. We have loved the teachers and support from the staff. Great communication with parents and they do everything they can to improve and meet the needs of the students.

Our family is very happy with our experience at Aliamanu Middle School. The campus is beautiful and has a very welcoming feel. The teachers and staff are invested in encouraging students to excel academically and personally. Students are treated as individuals with unique needs and the school is great at creating events and programming to develop the whole child. The administration at AMS is constantly reaching out to be accessible to parents and the electives the school offers allow my child to try new things.

We'd heard mix reviews about the school before arriving on island. After attending a couple of parent meetings with the new(ish) principal that were really impressive, we decided to enroll our son with the idea we'd pull him out if things didn't go well. Turns out he's having a great experience. He likes his classes and most of his teachers. He seems reasonably challenged but not stressed out. He was selected for the leadership program which is a great class teaching the kids leadership and organizational skills and giving them the responsibility for making decisions about the school and implementing new programs. He loves it. I wish the extracurriculars were back on, but I understand the caution with COVID still making the rounds. The times I've reached out to teachers and counselors, they've been responsive and caring. I'm glad we decided to give the school a chance.

I didn’t have any issue with any of the teachers. I checked my daughters grades every day and if something didn’t look right I emailed the teacher and max 1 day I had a reply and (when needed) the issue was fixed right away. Only once I didn’t get a reply from a teacher so I called the school and in about 10 min problem was solved.

As a parent I am satisfied of the experience At this school. My daughters came home happy every day, homeworks always done or almost done. My daughter was not the best at math in elementary, but learned so much at Aliamanu that finished with an A. My other child was picked for Algebra and advanced art, not from asking but because teacher paid attention to her and saw potential, so I was very pleased. As students, my daughters had an awesome time!

Children are given the possibility to do homework during school time (at the end of class or at home room) which makes it easier on working parents and give children more free time. Also gives students the opportunity to ask directly to the teacher if something is not clear

This school is dedicated to inspiring and empowering the students. They do student-centered projects and events such as the first annual Student Summit. My daughter came home and talked about all the activities she was able to participate in. They are also on track with a foreign exchange program with JAPAN!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the Administration, Faculty and Staff. The Principal is the first one out there picking up trash and greeting students. He leads by example and motivated the faculty and staff to do the same... you can see that he's changed the climate in the school from a group a employees to a dedicated team.

Worst school ever. I was bullied and the teachers and administration did nothing about it. There was the time I was bullied in front of a teacher. Not only did she not do anything to the bullies she gave ME a dirty look. Good luck if you attend this horrible school- you'll need it.

4/5 teachers are effective. I am really pleased with the english and science teachers my child has this year. I think the WHEEL teachers could use a bit of help. I'm not sure if the two WHEEL teachers my child has had are just filling the class time each quarter with fluff, but they are the least effective. I'm not even sure what the point of that classroom time is.

I am quite pleased with the responsibility and personal accountability the the school requires of its students. Integrity and respect have been essential for my child to participate in sports, as the coaches require grade checks and that the students don't have any disciplinary actions to be able to participate.

Approaching our 4th year at AMS (children are 12, 13, & 14 years) with 2 more years to go. We are a local Navy family. We have been blown aways with all the positive change that has been taken place at AMS over theses last 3 years. With any change/improvement it takes time for statistics to catch up.

We encourage parents to reach out to the school and talk with administration, they have an open door policy.

In our opinion AMS should be an 8/10. Prepared our children for a smooth transition with educational/social/life skills for high school.

Like many parents, we had the same reservations about sending our son to AMS. We agreed to give him the opportunity to continue school with his fellow classmates under the condition that he remained focused on his work and that there were no issues. Our son, began his 7th grade at AMS and did just fine. From a parents standpoint, there were still a lot of improvements we hoped to see that year that had not been achieved. As with many other schools, communication between school and families continues to be a major hurdle. I decided to volunteer my time at the school beside several other parents, which allowed us a glimpse into the school from an operational standpoint. I would have to say that although our son did fine and we experienced no issues, the school still needed a lot improving. Upon the start of this school year AMS underwent administrative changes that I will say, have brought about many positive changes. I am one of the parents that volunteered and assisted with the PTSO Board for the 2016-2017 school year and can honestly say that my son thoroughly enjoyed his last year at AMS. While the school is not where it needs to be academically, they are on the right track and direction in meeting many of the goals that would make them a competitive middle school. It takes a committed administration, staff and community to make a school successful. This school has begun many changes that will lead them to success!

So my student started 7th grade here & is now an 8th grader. We were skeptical at first but thought we could definitely give it a chance. Every child is different & learns differently. I have to admit the first year was a challenge I'd say for my student & for myself as a parent. I knew though going in that I would definitely have to get involved just like I have ever since my kids started school, so I could get to know the admin & teachers & know what is going on in my child's education! I could tell the school definitely needed to make a lot of changes for the better & I was hoping I could help with that as much as I could as a parent b/c I want these years to be a great experience for my child! My biggest issue was the lack of communication b/w the school & parents & I have voiced my opinion many times by volunteering, attending SCC meetings & coffee hours with the principal as well so that I could voice my opinion about it. As the year went on I realized I would need to do more, so I volunteered to be on the PTSO board for the following year & brought a couple of other parents along. I have to say it's been the best thing we could have done. Starting this year we learned we would have a new principal & he is wonderful & I like what he is about, change for the better for our students & teachers!!! I could tell from the first time I met him that it is all about the kids!! He's so supportive of the PTSO & things we are doing to make it fun & exciting for the students. We have been able to recruit parent volunteers for different events, etc & even the teachers & staff are so involved & ready to help. It's been a great year so far & I expect it will continue! My child is doing great & enjoys all their teachers. I can tell a huge difference from last year, but I also believe it's the parent involvement that contributes to that as well! Middle school is hard enough on our kids & so we want this time to be memorable & fun for them so they can look back & say, yes I really enjoyed middle school & had great teachers who cared! Change doesn't happen over night, but I do believe this school will thrive & become a great school again, it's already on its way, as a parent I'm getting to witness it!

I can only speak on my child's teachers. Although my child doesn't have a lot of homework, what they do bring home is important & is challenging! They are expected to have it finished & turned in for a grade. They are given time at school sometimes to work on it or bring it home. Some homework/projects are shared so students have to work together which is great!

Our school has been changing since last year. We have a new Principal that supports the students and teachers. He has gone around campus to clean it himself! He is purchasing technology for all classrooms to have. I know there are bad reports but we are doing great this year! We have smaller class sizes compared to our closest middle school. All schools have their issues. This school is not exempt. However many of the issues could be remedied through parent involvement. Its easy for each entity to point their fingers and blame the other!! However it is through a strong relationship with parents and the school that the child and school will be successful.
Since i have been a part of this schools functions i havent seen any parent involvement. There are many opportunities to volunteer... To be an active part of the childrens educational activities, to just help out but yet no one shows up. Change happens through participation... Its easy to complain and make it everyone elses issue BUT if you arent going to be a part of the solution then you are part of the problem. These teachers and staff are only partly responsible... Parent and students share equal responsibility in the sucess and growth of the child. I understand many people work... But zero involment for nearly 800 students isnt justified.
if you put positive in positive will come out... Until then people will continue to spread around the misconceptions that are a result of no involvement or participation.
My advice is Show up when there are activity days, coffee hours, ptso meetings and functions. Volunteer for book fairs, sports, copy cat club, school clean up and improvement projects, and the many other volunteer projects! Bring your ideas and support!! Working together is the way to make this school great!! The Potential is there!! Get involved and stay involved...

I went to this school fearing it would be hard since I'm military but it's not. This school is very diverse and easy to make any friends. Yes this school isn't the cleanest but, they redid many things and the campus has gotten much better. The teachers are nice and challenge you. I learned a lot and when I needed help with anything, they were always there for you. If you feel that your child could do much better, they have advanced classes for those that can learn faster than others. Over all the school isn't all that bad... It's easy to learn your way around and easy to get help if needed. This school is quick to judge but the two years I attended, my perspective changed.

I am a student at Aliamanu Middle School. I am very disappointed at this schools cleanliness and food and teaching! The teachers don't even teach new things! And there bathroom smells and the toilets and sinks are constantly overflowing! And the food! Let's just say it's unspeakable!! There was a cockroach in my friends food and one day for lunch they served canned spinach and rice. And their rice taste like dirty dish water. So I DEFINITELY POSITIVELY 100% encourage you to send you child to another school! This school sucks!!

No stars if I could give them that. Even if you come to the school with an education plan for your child, the staff does not review it to see what was done to help your child. The teachers and staff will claim "I didn't know that" and blame you for not telling them--even when it is clearly stated that your child has an accommodation plan. One teacher in particular will question your parenting skills, but will tell you that they are not criticizing you, "Just making an observation and opinion." Well, if it's not criticizing, then what do you call it when you say "It all starts at home"? Perhaps someone should question her teaching abilities and methods? kind of strange to have only one teacher have problems with the child when the others do not. Unfortunately, as a parent, there isn't much you can do because the school admin will always side with their teachers. Too bad we don't have any other choice for where we can send our kids for middle school--unless you can afford private school or are lucky enough to get a transfer to another school. The rest of us are stuck with this poor excuse for a school unless we either move or homeschool (not always an option either).

If I could give negative stars, I would. We have been through this school with several of our children, and have had both ends of the spectrum in terms of experiences--the "great and wonderful" and the "awful and terrible." An earlier review stated parents should "walk the talk" and work with the schools...trust me, even when you do that, it doesn't make it all "sugar and spice." AMS only wants to help those students who are an asset to the school and will help to fix the bad reputation this school has. I know because my kids were some of those great kids and the school would bend over backwards for them. But if you have a child who needs help, and is considered "too much work" or has a learning disability they are not familiar with, then they don't care; even with education plans in place. The Principal/VP do not listen to parents's concerns. They tell you know they know better because they are in the system. As a military family, we always worry about whether our children will be behind when they relocate back to the Mainland. This is not our first time in this school or even second, and from my experience, AMS' education philosophy is still at least 20-30 years behind.

There are a few fantastic Teachers at this school and there are some horrible ones. The office front staff is always great and friendly. Front office staff is always helpful with everything you need. The assitant principal is wonderful and helpful. We are a Navy family and have 5 years on this island my daughter has had one year at this school. If your kid needs help in school and you are looking for teacher to parent communication and cooperation from the school you wont find it here. You get excuses from the counselor and a lot of empty words from teachers. Also got some thinly veiled hostile remarks from one teacher at a conference in front of my child. I have another mid currently in elementary school here and will not send him to this middle school when his time comes. We are not new to hawaii but this school is nit doing its job correctly.

We're a military family & our son went to AMS for 7th & 8th grades. {On island for 3 years.} He's small & was a target for bully's - by other military kids. It happened but not to great difficulty. I heard bad things about AMS but experienced very little problems. I saw more 'bad' parents than 'bad' students, 'bad' teachers or faculty. I would say I spent a good amount time at the school for many reasons & the staff always made the effort. I rarely saw an ineffective employee - no matter where they worked. I even volunteered to help the lunchroom & the staff was great. We are now on the mainland (TX) & both our kids are in a highly rated school district. I was worried that maybe there would be some catch up but my son finished w/B+ & daughter (5th) w/A, enrolling in AP/TAG classes. Involved parents make more of a difference to helping the Hawaii State education, which has problems but every state has it's issues. Aliamanu is a good school but it needs improvement like many US school. Most helpful advise: parents who work WITH THE STAFF & drop the "at my last school" mentality that seems to drive most of the parents who write "not so helpful" rants. Walk the talk.

My daughter is about to complete 8th grade after being here for both years. She has had a few teachers that have been terrific by providing challenging assignments and being fair to the students. However, there are an equal number of teachers that do not communicate, hand out F's/D's with no feedback as to why?, tell the kids they don't like them and use profanity. Also expect your child to have a sub on a regular basis. Another problem is the limited communication-important things like ACT/HSA tests, award ceremonies, schedule changes are rarely communicated. Students have morning announcements--but it doesn't mean the information gets home. The staff at the front desk are always kind and I know the Asst. Principal has her hands full with the constant problems from gangs, fighting & bullying. Parents who can't afford to send their child to private school or home-school are left with little options. The best thing to do is try to get a GE for Moanalua MS, if you don't want your child to go here. Overall, my daughter made a lot of friends at this school & learned a whole lot of "street level" culture....she will need to have a tutor when we head to the mainland.

I attended this school from 1968-1970. It was called Aliamanu Intermediate School. I received a wonderful education. Mr. Miwa was the band director and he taught me to play the saxophone. Mrs. Lansden, Mr. Uehara...they all were great. We lived on Hickam Air Force Base... and Aliamanu was a clean and beautiful school. Yes, occasionally fights broke out between the locals and the haoles...but you just needed to treat each other with respect, and most of the time confrontation could be avoided. We had many school affiliated clubs and the teachers were very willing to stay after school and tutor you if need be. Parents were very involved in the PTA, which served to enhance our education. Our Principal was always very visible on campus, as were our teachers at change of classes. I am sorry to read all of the negative comments about this school. A school is what you make of it. Malahini's to the island need to realize that this is NOT the mainland. This is Hawaii with varied cultural differences. Military children come and go, but the local children form strong bonds from K-12. Courtesy and respect will still go along way in establishing friendships. Aloha and Mahalo for reading.

He has been in this place a whopping two weeks and I'm ready to pull him out. On his very first day, his history teacher purposely kept him after class so he would miss the bus. Our son insisted he had to go or the bus would leave him, the teacher kept him anyway. As soon as the busses left, he was permitted to leave. Simply because he didn't like the way my son wrote down an assignment. here in Hawaii IF your child's school even offers a bus (many don't) parents have to pay a hefty fee to use it. About $300/yr. They accept cash only, no refunds. This same teacher is now threatening to dock him points if I do not provide our son with a red ink pen so our son can grade the other students papers! They're not allowed to use lockers, and all but 2 bathrooms are deadbolted! The gym teacher yells and hollers at the kids in a demeaning way. He's been there 2 weeks and has yet to be provided with a math book! In these two weeks he's seen his actual math teacher 3 times, the rest have been substitutes.

Anyone reading this, if you are reading this because you are trying to find out if this school is going to be good. Let me tell you from every angle NO! I have dealt with a lot of schools on island and by far this is the worst! Hawaii's school system is not horrible there are some great schools on island!! However this is not one! Run and run fast!! This school does not care about there special needs kids, let alone anyone else. There morals are so backwards. We send our kids to school to learn not play around! They have no lockers and expect these kids to carry everything!!! The cafeteria is horrible!! Just run and run fast and far!!

This school is terrible. School has been going on almost one Trimester and we are currently enrolling our 7th grade son elsewhere because Aliamanu is a complete waste of educational space. 1. My son needed to call me because he didn't have his ID, the office told him NO. so he couldn't use the bus home, which they took him to school without the ID, which is against regs too. and wouldn't bring him home, so we had to go get him, and all could have been fixed had they let him use the darn phone. He was trying to call me when class wasn't in session, and they told him No. His doesn't have a math book. I was told, that all schools are changing and Hawaii couldn't afford new books, so they just dont use the books. PE teacher cusses the kids out constantly, and no matter how many parent complaints he gets, he is still there cussing away and putting the kids down The material they learn is a joke. We wish we would have listened to others' warnings about this school and saved ourselves alot of money and stress. Getting him out of this school is by far the best choice.

We are new to the area and I have a son in 7th grade. We are a military family and all three of our children are going to 3 new schools this year. From our experience so far this year everyone has been great. The office staff has been friendly and helpful and teachers have contacted me personally by phone to introduce themselves. We had one incident that could have made my son's life at this school a nightmare and the VP was on it and took every measure possible to contain the situation and then phone me to come down and help resolve everything. I am previously from APG, MD and this school is a huge improvement for us from the Aberdeen schools in terms of action, communication and resolution. I am optimistic that we will have a smooth year. I have given it an average rating as we are still in the early stages of the school year and as of right now I have now qualms about having my youngest son start here next year.

My daughter and son goes to this school. My daughter attended last year, was beat up, phone stolen, and money out of her backpack during PE. They do not have lockers you can use. I have had two bad experiences with the Vice Principal and the Principal. Neither seemed to follow thru with any actions. When asked to provide a students statement from the student's parents to validate my daughters claim that she was identified as a victim early on they "lost" the statement. How convenient. Now this year my daughter's phone was stolen from the teachers desk. DO NOT send your children here if you have a choice. Very reason I WILL NOT be extending my tour here.

This school is horrible...my child has only been attending this school for about 3 months and has had several incidents with a bully...I have went to the school and have not been able to get anything resolved. They do not take bullying seriously at all. They have called the police department on one of the bullies before but the same student is still freely walking the halls of the school terrorizing more and more kids. I guess nothing will ever get resolved until someone is seriously hurt. I have pulled my child from this horrible school and if you are zoned for this school I do advise you to rethink letting them attend this school. The teachers don't seem to care, and the administration don't seem to care as well. The principle is never in the office. This school is not safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From the moment the Newcomers Orientation began I knew I was going to be disappointed. I have never encountered a principal so out of touch with the very people he should be reaching out to. After speaking with him briefly I was certain that he is far from an administrator. Of course he holds that title, but he lacks the credentials and sadly so do much of the staff. It appears the teachers here ventured into education for the purpose of the check and not so much the impact they would have on students. Upon finding out that my family and I were headed to Hawaii I was overjoyed INITIALLY. Oddly enough you come to realize that the experience of what is supposed to be paradise is NOT AT ALL worth your child's education. It has been almost a month since school began and if you could see the quality of work my daughter is bringing home you would gasp. Students are allowed to write in Language Arts the same way that they shorthand a text message. The learning environment is very chaotic. Students who want to learn are certainly at a disadvantage. Entering high school after attending a school like this is an absolute setback. Trust me I have heard several horror stories.

I have read several reviews and can unfortunately say I agree with this school's poor rating. Like others, I have had bad experiences with the administration and a couple of teachers at this school. Students are asked to adjust their ratings of the school/staff when completing surveys, which is highly unethical behavior. I attempted to work with the staff and administration to address some concerns but they were unreceptive. At one point, my daughter felt as if she were being harassed by some of the staff members--being called out in front of the class and other teachers. When asked about this behavior, the staff members had little I would NOT RECOMMEND this school to anyone. When you move to paradise, be prepared to homeschool your precious ones.

If I could I would rate this school a zero. The principal has never had any social skills with me. If none with me as a parent then I would assume none with the children that go to this school. The most of my child's teacher reflect the same non caring attitude and demeanor of the principal. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS SCHOOL TO ANYONE!!!

I am a parent of a student in AMS. My daughter recently got into drama. I contacted the Administrators & they didn't do anything to help the situation. My daughter was getting harassed & they STILL didn't say anything to help the situation. I know there is only 3 more months of school, butj I might think about switching her, because all of this hasn't changed; I actually think it's gotten worse.

I am a parent of a 7th grader that is going to this school right now we moved here for the military station. This school does not know how to educate a child with learning disablities at all. I was actually told by the principle to take my daughter to a doctor and ask them what else I could do to help her because they dont know what to do to help her. she only has Test Anxiety and they dont know what that is. They actually said they have no idea what it is .
