Just want to clarify for people because the info on this page is incorrect. The tuition is ~ $24,000 a year. It goes up every year. There are NO sports. There are only three grades teachers and they combine all the classes. Total enrollment is around 45 kids for grades 1-5. Only 8 kids in middle school. School day is 7:55- 245pm.

My husband and I are born and raised on Oahu. We are not crunchy parents. We are locals who know what a strong education looks like and we deliberately chose Waldorf.

We have two happy keiki at HWS. Our eldest (6) started at three, and our youngest (3) at two. Both are in the EC program and it is truly special: warm teachers, so many spoken foreign languages, epic play yards shaded by monkeypod trees, breadmaking, butter churning, soup making, in-the-dirt joy, crazy climbing, and endless creativity. My kids come home talking about crafting dragons with beeswax, feeding grubs to chickens, and finding ALLL the bugs. Their stick collection is also insane. IFYKYK.

It's unfortunate that Waldorf gets written off as a school for hippies or kids who can't handle "real" school because the opposite is true. It's one of the most research-backed approaches to early childhood education grounded in developmental psychology. The reality is that children learn differently at different ages, and that rushing them does real damage. Boundaries here are clear and consistent and they're built around how children actually develop, not how we wish they would. If your kid isn't thriving in a traditional classroom, the answer might not be medication or more structure. It might be a different kind of structure entirely.

My eldest is a wild wolf . He's stubborn, strong-willed, and knows exactly what he wants. At his previous school, teachers suggested medication at 3 because he wasn't content in a playground smaller than my Makiki apartment kitchen, and needed more movement than their static classroom could offer. The space contained nothing natural except the dead leaves that wafted in with the wind. They saw his iron will as a problem to manage and his energy as something to suppress. At Waldorf, that same will is met with respect and clear expectations. Not ready for circle time? That's okay, but when outdoor play comes, you'll circle back and finish what you skipped. Teachers talk to me about his strengths, meet him where he is developmentally, and give him the space to be exactly who he is while still holding the line. That wild wolf? He is so deeply loved- and he is thriving.

I just love Honolulu Waldorf. My son has been here since early childhood and now hes in first grade its honestly been a dream. The teachers really see him for who he is. They care about his rhythm, his creativity, his whole being not just trying to make him sit still and memorize.

What I love most is how they nurture problem-solving, emotional regulation, innovation, and kindness. Ive even read studies that say universities and tech companies actually look for Waldorf kids because theyre the ones who know how to think outside the box, be creative, and keep going no matter what. And I can see that in my son hes grounded, kind, curious, and confident in who he is.

There was a time when my son was growing through some things, and the support we received from Waldorf was incredible. The teachers and staff spent so much time with me talking through ideas, offering guidance, and truly caring about his confidence and wellbeing. They werent just supporting him, they were supporting me as a parent too. The level of thought, compassion, and care they put into everything made me feel held, and Im forever grateful. Now I see my son standing so much more grounded in his truth and confidence because of it and hes only 6.

One of the things that amazes me most is the emotional tools hes learned. When hes having a hard moment at home, Ill watch him stop, take a breath, and use what his teachers taught him to calm himself down before going back to what he was doing. For a 6 yr old to already have that awareness and self-regulation is incredible.

The community also feels like an extension of our family. Since our kids spend most of their week and their waking hours at school, it means everything to me that Waldorf invites parents to be part of it. We get to volunteer, spend time in the classroom, and really see our children learning and growing. Its not just a drop-off where youre disconnected from half your childs life its a true community where families support each other and everyone wants the children to thrive.

In a world where memorization is becoming obsolete with AI, Waldorf is giving our kids what really matters: resilience, creativity, and the inner knowing that they can do anything. They get to be kids, spend time in nature, build relationships, and learn in ways that light them up. Im forever grateful we found this school and wish every child could experience this kind of education and community.

Our family is so grateful to be part of this Waldorf school.
What stands out most is how my daughter truly loves learning - not for grades or tests, but out of her own curiosity and motivation.

I love that the kids create their own main lesson books, weaving art into every subject so learning feels alive and meaningful.

The campus has decades-old monkeypod trees shading the courtyard and playground, and the small class sizes really let each child be seen and supported.

As parents, we feel part of a community where teachers, families, and children know each other - it truly feels like a village.

With a new Waldorf-trained head of school who brings deep experience and also had her child go through a Waldorf education, were hopeful and excited to see the school continue to grow while staying true to the heart and principles of Waldorf education.

My child and I started to take the Parent Child program there and I fell in love with the time spending there. Since then, my child has been there and now she is in kindergarten. She loves to go to school every single day. Especially she enjoys the puppet show and loves to play and imagine with natural toys and materials to develop her imagination! How beautiful it is! I think this school is an essential investment in childrens healthy development of imagination and creativity.

We love the community and the beauty HWS brings to our family daily. Our kids radiate confidence and have a love for learning. Our son has been at this Waldorf school from preschool through 8th grade, and its truly felt like a second home. The loving teachers and supportive community have made all the difference. Were so grateful he had the privilege to grow up in such a diverse, culturally rich, and playful environmentfar from screens and academic pressure. I agree with another reviewer that this is the worst school on the island! They were all written in the context of years ago or with long-distance alumni. It was horrible several years back and is still very accurate today. If you look at the other reviews here, you will note they are from a long time ago or a grandparent noting a remote experience. The faculty and staff are barely educated and treat the students very poorly. The academics barely exist. I regret that my children attended this school, which is the sentiment of almost all parents who chose to place their children in the program for however long. I am writing a review here, but most schools control their social media pages. You will hear many shocking stories if you talk to people in the Hawaii Kai and the larger community.

My son went to the school from preschool through seventh grade. Its a wonderful and nurturing and honors the natural development of a child. It made him love school and he is now about to graduate from college and go onto grad school.

The students don't get homework until 4th grade and when they do get homework it is real content, not just filling in blanks on a worksheet....as the students get older the homework load will increase but so will their capacity to do the work.

The students get a main lesson teacher that grows witht hem through the years, as well as all of the specialty teachers ( foreign language, movement, Hula, strings, handwork) They really get to know the students and are able to work with them at so they can understand the lessons....I think the comfort of the familiarity is a wonderful way for a child to grow.

Our school is small so everyone is recognized and the students are taught from a young age to be kind and caring, to cooperate vs compete, and to celebrate and appreciate everyones differences ....and this year through Roots of Empathy children are learning more

I love our school. I am an alumni from the 80's and love the wholesome nature of our school. As a parent now, I know how important Honolulu Waldorf is for our future society. In todays fast paced world childhood can slip by in an instant but at Honolulu Waldorf School they truly care about childhood development and educate the whole child. Our son has been attending since first grade and everyday bugs me to hurry so we can get to school early. He has learned so many incredible things that he will keep with him for the rest of his life. At Waldorf the children are not mere consumers of education they are actual participants. They learn to see the bigger picture and how each individual has strengths that can be celebrated. If you want to be around a bunch of "Woke" kids have a conversation with a Waldorf student. Each day they are exposed to foreign language (Japanese & Spanish), lots of movement (games class & Hula), a rich music program all students begin Violin & Cello in gr 3. Lots of art through out the day to help with creative expression. Every year each grade does their own class play....the list goes on and on. Plus the children learn to live with kindness and the superficial material world isn't what excites these children....truly the love of nature and life long learning is what excites a Waldorf student.

In 2003 I began my search for the perfect school for my daughter. I visited many preschools but the moment I stepped foot on the grounds of HWS, I knew my search was over. My daughter graduates this year, 14 years after that visit so long ago. HWS has given my daughter love, community, support, confidence and life long friends. She's excelled in both sports and academics. She was accepted into every college she applied to, but beyond that, my daughter went to school day after day, year after year with a smile on her face. HWS provided an environment that was safe, nonjudgmental, encouraging, filled with teachers and peers that were nothing short of parental figures and siblings. 14 years ago I made one of the best decisions of my life, I'm just sad it's coming to an end.

Worst school on the island. No rules. Teachers are barely trained. Bullying is allowed. After our son attended 1 year of preschool and were so disappointed and frustrated with the school, that we left.

Would not recomend this school. Elementary teachers are not properly trained to handle communication with parents. School lacks in organization, have problems with bullying and it seem to have a lot of gossip. Unless you are willing to follow all their rules, which seems to be getting made up as they go alone, - perhaps you are better off with any other school on the island.

f you think this Waldorf School is like other successful Waldorf Schools, PLEASE THINK AGAIN. The grades are a GAMBLE depending on the TEACHER your child will have for 8 YEARS. There is little to no accountability for poor quality and inconsistent standards of education and behavior. The admin and faculty dogma is closely held in secrecy which is part and parcel to the Rudolph Steiner s teachings and if questioned you will receive patent answers with little thought to your child s specific needs. If you find a faculty member that is willing to listen without prejudice to your concerns, good luck. Even the faculty who are known amongst their colleagues for poor performance have job safety. Many families have left this school after investing many years in it because their concerns have been systematically swept under the rug. Mum's the word here. I for one fell under the spell of this school. I found that my child and the majority of classmates that stayed were left with such deficits in academics that intense interventions were needed for most. Our class started with 14 or more and ended with 4. Be aware of retention rates at this school. They differ among the faculty greatly.

I think this School is very special. Teachers care about each student and they watch over them very closely. My son has been in this school since first grade and he is now Freshman at High School. He has become well rounded teen ager and I can proudly say same about all his class mates. You do not have to worry about bullies in this school, because they are taught to be true to yourself and to think outside of the box. That is why each students can accept different type of personalities and be able to enjoy one another as a group. I also love the fact the Waldorf School teaches importance of sustainability. I truly believe Waldorf education is the education for the future.

This school has created the environment for my daughter to flourish in several aspects of her life. She has become very confident, secure and has opened to become a quite sociable being. Over the four years she has being there, she has developed her artistic skills highly. She is very comfortable with japanese, Spanish and Hawaiian languages. She's fascinated with math, which in most cases and schools, is the least favourite subject. I'm grateful to be able to give my daughter a waldorf education.

My three children attended Honolulu Waldorf and my grandchildren now do. The teachers are incredibly dedicated to their students, the curriculum is richly varied, broad and deep with the approach varying with the age and individual learning style. Children learn respect and responsibility, and care deeply for each other and the natural world. A visitor hears music, laughter, foreign languages, and poetry every day and sees happy, healthy children learning lifelong skills and finding their own paths for the future. It is truly a healing education for our difficult times.

The school is small, so all the teachers know all the students by name. Most all the kids know each other too. My child says his school "is the BEST SCHOOL EVER", and he wants to go there every day. I love that my child is in a safe, loving, nurturing school. I love the philosophy of Waldorf and the caring community. Maybe the school could improve some of the buildings, which I think is already being talked about & is in the future plans.

Our school campuses are safe nurturing environments for toddlers to middle schoolers, and for high schoolers. Both campuses are peaceful locations staffed with caring and committed staff. Under the new leadership of an administrator who is passionate about both the Waldorf philosophy and the growth of this recently struggling school community. Our administrator is focused and actively building a successful environment for staff & students. She also maintains an open door policy for the parent body, which I have personally utilized. Two of my children go to Honolulu Waldorf School. One in lower grade and one in middle school. I believe this is our 5th year or so attending HWS. I totally agree with many other comments about lack of leader ship but this has changed quite a bit this school year. Now, we have a very strong leader who knows what she is doing and it seems like everything is improving gradually but surely. I am much more hopeful about the school. I truly love the philosophy of Waldorf and this loving and strong community. My kids attended 6 different schools in their lives so far including local and schools in some other countries, but this school provides the best nurturing environment. I hope it keeps improving better education for our kids which they need.

Aloha! My daughter is completing her 11th year at Honolulu Waldorf and I am eternally grateful.that she has been able to experience an education that meets her academically, emotionally and physically. Honolulu Waldorf School is a great place for children to grow, explore and learn. Although highly academic, things are taught in such a way that the children retain a love for learning. Our son attended from preschool and a short stint for a year at another school, reconfirmed our decision that Waldorf is right for him (and us!) Words cannot describe the wealth of experiences that are offered to students who have a Waldorf education. It really is all about teaching and supporting the whole child. Yes, the facilities need work, and yes, the school lacked leadership the past few years, but those items are being addressed and are small things compared to all the good being done. I would highly recommend this school to anyone interested in offering their children rich experiences that feed their souls!

My granddaughter and grandson go to the Honolulu Waldorf School and my step son and step daughters went to the school. My wife teachers at the school and so do I--for over 30 years. HWS is a remarkable school environment for children and for young people because of its focus on creative learning and finding one s individuality. Its educational methods are well in advance of other schools that mistakenly seek progress in screen time and high stakes testing. The Waldorf School is truly an education for life and not just for college and the job market. The teachers have a say in all that goes on in the running of the school and take an interest in each child. No one slips through the cracks. The parent community is extremely warm and supportive of the work the teachers do. The two campuses, lower school in the valley and upper school by the ocean, are beautiful settings for growing up and learning in Hawai i. It is a pleasant place to be. Children love to come to school, parents, and teachers do too. Both campuses are in the long overdue process of upgrading facilities. Class sizes are small, quality is high, and it is one of the best-kept secrets of East O ahu and Honolulu schools!

This sweet little school has brought years of wonderful education and joy to our children. They absolutely love their teachers and the Waldorf curriculum does what it sets out to do...to instill in the children a love for learning. There is a new administrative director this year at the school and we are thrilled with her leadership skills, professionalism, and friendly demeanor. I can't think of any other school on the Island that I would rather send my children to.

Be very careful about the teachers at this school. After 8 years at the school my child got a terrible teacher that was not held accountable for his abusive behavior and incompetence. In theory this school is great but beware if you get a bad teacher and there are several.

we are very happy with the school. I've read over all the reviews on this site. Of course no school is perfect. I have looked long and had at many private schools on this island. They all have pros and cons. Go with your gut feeling when picking a school. My kids are so happy at Waldorf and we appreciate the small community and wonderful teachers. The new Administrative Director sounds fabulous, we look forward to a strong leader for the school.

I have two children in the Honolulu Waldorf School, one in middle school and one in elementary school. Both children have been at the school since kindergarten and they are thriving, happy, creative, and love their teachers and school. The community is fantastic and we find the teachers and the parents to be dedicated, hard working, and conscientious. We feel very lucky to be in a school that educates the child with their whole well-being in mind; very different from institutionalized schooling. My child goes here. And as the previous review, my daughter loves school. She talks about it on the weekend. Little stress yet she is learning, shes 5 and is reading, shes curious and happy. I had a opportunity to go to an Ivy League school here and stuck with Waldorf and I am happy about my choice. I love the "no media" zone.. Its nice to know she is completely unplugged when she is in school all day!!

I am a student that attended the Waldorf high school as well as going to the lower school for nine years. I think this is truly one of the most amazing schooling systems imaginable. As a student it really encouraged me to have a passion for learning, as well as giving me a wonderful background in art. I am a student with a very high GPA and also very strong in both music and art of varying mediums. In my opinion I owe my success in school to the amazing teachers and alternate education system that is the Honolulu Waldorf School. Truly a magnificent place to grow and learn.

I love this school. I have a 9 and 16 year old and both started in the Kindergarten. I am a creative intellectual person and found my own education painfully boring. The Waldorf system excites the kids and makes them want to learn. As a successful business owner I recognize the need for talented people who can think outside the box and problem solve. The Waldorf system nurtures this ability in their students. With computers at our fingertips we need to educate kids to think creatively not to regurgitate information. My kids are thinkers and I need to give some of that credit to the Honolulu Waldorf School. It is a loving and supportive environment and I am thankful I have the means to give them this opportunity.

This school has wonderful ideas and gives children the childhood they need and deserve to have, nurturing the imagination and giving them a strong foundation to learn without burning out. Unfortunately it is lacking leadership, organization and I believe parent participation. Tuition is comparable to other private schools on the island yet the facilities are old, neglected and dirty. If Waldorf could find leadership and balance their budget, update their school and playground, families on the island might consider Waldorf. This school should have a wait list just like other schools but because of lack of leadership and neglected facilities it is labeled a "hippy" school. I appreciated the wholesome approach this school offered but did not have the confidence in their leadership (or lack of) to keep my most precious child at this school. Other schools are beginning to embrace this type of learning yet doing it with leadership and organization. Honolulu Waldorf needs to get their act together.

This school has steadily gone downhill with no leadership, poorly trained teachers, a lack of communication, inconsistent discipline, and is constantly changing policy from year to year. Not surprisingly, facilities are in need of repair and the school overall is poorly funded. Very limited enrichment programs and opportunities, particularly for children with challenges and those that are gifted. Anyone brave enough to ask questions are labeled and ostracized. Not a happy place these days.

This is a good school in many ways. It lacks the heart, knowledge and true spirit of Waldorf but is still better in many ways than what else is out there. In Europe, Waldorf works elegantly and effectively for 'difficult' or disruptive children, in fact, so much so that the government pays for some of the most problematic children to attend Waldorf. This is a great life experience for the whole community. It seems that this is not the case here, 'difficult' children are not well-held in a way that they can heal and often become the scapegoats for teachers inability and/or insecurity. We removed our children after several years. We could not recommend this as a wholesome or effective learning environment.

We have two children at the HWS and they love it! If they are sick and we keep them at home, they cry. They don't like school breaks because they miss school. Most importantly to me however, is they are curious about the world around them. I think the world they are growing up into will be very different from the one I grew up in and I believe Waldorf education will give them the tools they will need to be happy.
