We love this school! I am soooo glad my daughter got into HTA. She had kindergarten at a regular public school. I knew I had to find something different, her kindergarten experience was so sad with no art, music, and wasn't able to play on a real playground. When she got into HTA for 1st grade she finally could look forward to going to school. They do so much using creativity and experiences that make the kids want to learn. They go to farms, gardens, do crafts, learn hands on. She is getting to learn in ways she would never have gotten else where. Parents are more involved too as an added bonus.

During my time at HTA, I had many good experiences and interesting ones. Coming from a school that offered AVID and other college/career programs, I was surprised to see that HTA was almost completely devoid of these kinds of courses. In addition to this, they didn't practice AVID or college/career skills online or in person. During 12th grade, I found this very difficult for me. Although we got emails stating where we should be with our college/career process and we had an incredible college and career counselor, I found myself very unsure of my future. Additionally, I felt that I wasn't even ready for what was ahead due to this feeling of incompleteness. Although, I do have to mention that this school is very self driven. The teachers will help you if you are willing to try. Everyone will give their all into your education if you are willing to put your heart into it. Maybe that's why I felt so unsure, because I didn't reach out enough. Regardless, though, I feel there should be more programs and mentorship for college and career purposes. I would also like to mention the grading system. I got A's on mostly everything I turned in. Sometimes, it didn't even feel deserved. We didn't have to go "above and beyond" to get an A, rather we just needed to do what was expected of us. Also, I ended up getting an A in a specific class, but when reading over this teachers letter of recommendation, they told the scholarship committee that my work was "not that great" but that I had a very good personailty. Therefore I wondered, why do we get an A? For just doing the work or for the way our work is done. Besides these things, I have to say the teachers are absolutely amazing. They helped me whenever I needed it, they were very flexible, and they left unforgettable impressions on me. The way they involve our parents into our learning helped me stay on track when it was hard for me to do it myself. As I said before, this school is for self driven students who are passionate about what they want to do. If you are willing to try, then everyone else is willing to help you and work with you to recieve the most of your high school education. Overall, I would recommend this school, but as previously stated, there needs to be better resources for high schoolers college and career decisions as well as a better grading system that accurately protrays the quality of our work. If your student had learning differences this is not the school. There are some great teachers, however like another review pointed out, principal is unethical.

Where do I start with how passionate we are about this school. For the last two years, hta has met all our needs and more. Each year gets better and looking forward to the next two. We struggled for months trying to figure out where our son should go to HS on Maui. He's never been in a public school and was homeschooled for four years since moving to Hawaii. Once I looked into HTA, I was hooked. The relationship between teachers, advisors, kids, and parents is wonderful. I truly feel we're a team working towards my son's success through HS and towards college. Our son loves the curriculum, which includes project based assignments, clubs and community. Visit your island location and you too will find this school to be the one for you. I've read negative reviews and my response to those are not every school is for every child. If this is the environment you and your child are wanting, you will not be disappointed.

(Maui) When we first started 2 yrs ago in 1st gr it was good. We had a good teacher who worked with us to be flexible for my sons special learning needs. However when we started 2nd the director became involved in ieps and things became a Nightmare. All flexibility was gone. we just could not keep up with all the last minute changes, inconsistencies , and double talk . Because it is the only homeschool public-school hybrid available we stuck it out. In hindsight this was a bad decision.

I started seeing other parents jumping ship due to the lack of adequate planning and the reduction of the parents’ voices into the child's education. We stayed until They arbitrarily made so many changes to my sons program that they set him up to fail. We begged them not to but they just insisted it was for policy. This lead to my child not being able to attend. Instead of being supportive and trying to help their answer was to threaten truancy. It was a nightmare.

The amount of unethical Behavior from school staff has been the worst I've ever seen. Ie A fellow parent enrolled her son into 2nd gr and she let them know upfront and that he was struggling with reading . She was reassured that it would not be a problem in that they would work with him. After they started school they told her that he was too far behind and that it would be best for her to unenroll him.

For me the hardest things was dealing with all the double talk and deceit and 6 to 9 hours school days! . Also the "seat of their pants" type of management made it quite a roller coaster. This program a huge burden on the parents. Its a public school system, which means alot of busy work That you as the parent will be administering over 80% of . I mean really it's a great game for them because you're doing all the work for free and all they have to do is provide a teacher for a few hours a week. The other part of the burden is having a bunch of last-minute changes And demands that you have to try to juggle . Very stressful.

My advice is if you're going to homeschool, homeschool all the way without all the extra stress. We now have a home program for my child and he is thriving.

THIS SCHOOL IS AMAZING!! The only negative reviews have to be from people who didn't attend but couldn't get in as this school is always maxed capacity! So you need to ENROLL EARLY!! This school Exceeds across the board!

I am blown away that there would be any negative reviews on this school!! This SCHOOL IS AMAZING! I can never brag enough on it!! I don't know what I would do if we had not found this school! Being military and moving to find great schools the stress. Especially, here on Oahu where the school system as everyone who lives here or comes here to live is not great. This school meets beyond standards. My son is currently in 9th grade and attended 8th grade. What sets this school apart isn't just the great teachers..the learning..material..the care..it's what's offered with blended learning! The anti bullying which is REAL in this school! Kids can be themselves no matter what. Honestly moving all over with 2 kids in school I can tell you that does not exist in this day and age! So if you are looking for a wonderful school not just to excel your child and give them a wonderful education but to not have stress or worry about bullying and what they might pick up while learning this school is for you! Again I can't speak enough great things on this school!! WE LOVE HTA!!

To be honest...my daughter had always gone to private school previous to this year. She is in 10th grade and even she isn't impressed with the teachers or the material taught. She says her math teacher does a great job of teaching. But her English teacher only assigns vocab tests and some poetry blog assessment each week. Which isn't challenging. The Spanish teacher doesn't take the time to slow down to make sure the kids even understand what she's teaching. She has found that most of the time what the teachers teach is in no way connected to the online curriculum. And even the teachers professional attitudes are very lax. She has witnessed them cussing in front of students and then laughing about it. This is all coming from my 15 year old. I was told that material would be challenging because it was "blended" program. I have not found that to bet he case. It's really too easy and my daughter has told me she was afraid she wouldn't be up to par next year if she went back to private school. The traffic is horrible and the neighborhood surrounding the building isn't the safest. And no the staff doesn't communicate very well via email. I won't be re-enrolling her for next year.

This year 2014/2015 the HTA program went down hill .the school year started off with no materials being shipped or they showed up after the school year had already started. It was totally disorganized. HTA has taken away all freedom from the student and parents to work at their own pace. You must now follow what a teacher wants you to do. This really stunts the gifted child's growth. This program sold itself on being student needs based, not teacher base. HTA has also made online classes mandatory. Before, they were optional. Now even if your child is not needing the help, they are forced ,by the teacher, to attend a class. You use to be allowed to decided if you want to attend the HTA learning center day, now that too is mandatory. this tends to lead to a problem for gifted children. The traffic on that way one street is awful. its only a matter of time before someone get really hurt. Instead of keeping high goals for children, they have dumb down the program to fit more children to get more money. For a school with technology in the name you would think they offered a computer class, but not, they offer nothing in the way of technology base classes.

My kids have been enrolled from 2011-2015, from K- 4th. The curriculum is on par or better than mainland schools. There are electives available to students that were not at our local school. Art and music is available for all grades and foreign languages from 3rd grade up. HTA also offers many clubs via the school including hula, robotics, even a Lego club. I really like that my kids are getting what they need at a pace that we can control. If we need to stop and go over something again, it is okay. On the other hand, if we find something we can go through quickly we can move on. It can be challenging to get started with HTA, but it is worth the time and effort. The teachers know who you and who your family are. They are genuinely concerned for your child's success no matter what level they are. There is a personal relationship there that we did not have at our local school.

My children have just been approved for enrollment in to this school, WE ARE ALL REALLY EXCITED!!!! We have friends NOW that attend Hawaii Technology Academy, THIS is one HUGE reason why I want my children attending this academy. The progress and levels that they are at, it is just something that we want as well. I can see that our friends' children are WELL beyond where they should be academically, I can see where the regular brick and mortar has fell short for them, I feel the same is happening to my children. If they "get it" and some in the class do not, it has left my children stagnant waiting around for the others to "get it". I would like to give a review about HOW the school is, but my children have not yet had the opportunity to attend a scheduled day. From the overall experience and feelings I left with on the day we went for our 'Meet and Greet' I feel VERY confident that my children are going to do VERY well there.

These are all FAKE reviews posted by the curriculum company K12. The teachers don't communicate well and the administration is pompous and condescending. The worst one of all is the Executive Director who has an arrogance about her and her private school mentality. If you are not RICH and DON'T work your kids CANNOT ATTEND this school, you need to be home with them. It was better years ago with more electives and more support. It is STATE FUNDED HOMESCHOOL!!!! As far as the curriculum and the company that provides it check out what has been happening with them lately, class action lawsuit after lawsuit for taking public dollars.

HTA has a great curriculum, and for students who are self- directed, it is an ideal program, where you can work at your own pace within the course of the school year. You are lent a Macbook , textbooks and supplies for science, and have access to a full curriculum, with electives available. My daughter completed 5th grade with HTA on Kauai, and she learned so much in that year! She decided she wanted to attend a traditional school after that because she missed the interaction with peers; when she was tested at her new school, she was placed in the grades above hers in Math and English. The only caveats are that the office and administration were very disorganized, not easy to get in touch with, and there was little to no support here on our island. However, if you are a supportive parent and a motivated student, you can guide this yourself and have a great education.

My son is in his second year with HTA and we love it. It's like a online Montessori school, only better. The online assessments are top notch, requiring comprehension and mastery, and the course work is above par on many levels. The best part is the one on one attention my son gets from me as his learning coach. There are no other kids vying for the teachers attention, and no jokers distracting my son and disrupting class. It also gives me instant notification as to which parts of the class my son may need more direct scaffold the lesson plan to attain his zone of proximal development. In laymen's terms, it gives me an instant snapshot of where he is academically, everyday, and allows me to cater to his strengths and bolster his weaker areas with more direct instruction. The best part about this school is it enables us to take time off when we want to for extra curricular activities. I advise anyone who has the ability and the willingness to check into an online homeschool blended school like HTA because it is like getting your kid back after a long stint in the confines and mediocrity of the so-so public school system. My two high-schoolers love school and their teachers once again...how great is that?! After hearing how much they hated their other public school and several teachers "profiling" them, I had to try something new! This has been a very good decision for this very satisfied parent and educator. The beginning of the year was a bit crazy; but, the administrators ARE listening and making great changes! I can't say enough about the teachers, they REALLY show an interest in the students and offer many opportunities for tutoring. Strongly recommend!

I have two students attempting to do the schoolwork. We have been plagued with problems, from technical to unruly classrooms on-line. The staff are very slow to respond, not all, but many. Its a good idea on paper, but you get very bogged down by different approaches by different teachers, overwhelming amounts of email, changes in times, and much more. not good for everyone.

So far we love it!!! Overall our child has been excited to attend class, and very self motivated with the HTA program. There is a lot of work to do, and keeps him very busy. Its refreshing as a parent to see and hear your child has been heard and appreciated. As with any school there is always room for improvement, I don't think its perfect, but the respect my child is receiving and the excitement to learn he is emanating is by far worth it! The Highschool Curriculum and Program 4.5 stars. As long as your child is an independent learner and likes technology, this is a great place for High School Students who want to be challenged or are just bored of regular school. The teaching staff at this level seems to have it together. Unfortunately, the middle school program needs work, 2 stars max. The curriculum is fine, but this teaching staff creates a cumbersome schedule that requires too much face-to-face or Illuminate teaching sessions rather than putting the K12 system to better use. Many of the middle school teachers are not as technically savy as one would expect a teacher to be at a school named a "technology" academy. More importantly, they were VERY UNPREPARED for the school year to begin. We are several weeks into the school year and we are still dealing with teacher scheduling conflicts and last minute changes.

I am not a parent at the school but a grandparent and it has been great for my grandchildren. The principal is coarse and harsh but he does truly care for the children and expects the best of them. What brought us to this school was after going to open houses with private schools and public schools we attended one at HTA. The principal presented us with information and what sold us was he told us this might not be the right school for each of us and WE needed to make the decision and do the research. We chose HTA and are happy there but it was amazing to see the stoic New Yorker cry at the kindergarten graduation last year. He truly does care for our children.

Terrible school. The administrative staff is extremely disrespectful and the administrator is only concerned about letting the parent know how great he is. The school board consists of one Hawaiian Airline executive who doesn't get involved with concerns involving this school. I would not recommend this school at all.

We love this school it is our second year with HTA. I have a 4th and 5th grader. They do a lot better being at home most of the time doing their schoolwork online then going in to the learning center once a week. You really get the feeling that this school is there for the kids that they love kids and it is there main focus!

I have a daughter that goes to this school. She started this school from kindergarten and is now in the first grade. I love the curriculum and the attention she gets from her teachers. As a parent I know exactly where she is at and what she needs to work on without waiting for a progress report. The staff are very friendly and open. Parents are very involved in school activities. It's a lot of work for the parent but it's worth it knowing you are giving your child the attention they need to succeed.

This school has one of best resources for K12 curriculum but unfortunately it lacks good leadership and does not hestiate to bash a child and their self-esteem. The comments made are probably done by the staff of HTA. I would not recommend this school I'm a Naval Officer wife. My kids were stressed and dramatized by this school. A good possibility this post won't be available for viewing because of truth and the negative impact to your child school.
