My daughters transferred to Kailua El. two years ago, in grades 2 and 4. They were nervous about coming to a new school, but within the first week, they were decidedly happier here than they were at their last school. The teachers are friendly, the staff got to know them by name and the principal brought a lot of fun and energy into managing whole school activities. My younger child struggles with ADHD, and her teachers have been amazingly accommodating and helpful and she is very successful and happy in school. The girls have been involved in many school sponsored activities. They especially love the performing arts opportunities with winter concerts and talent show. They have also participated in Wednesday afternoon academies and take guitar lessons after school from the music teacher. The field trips have been exciting, my older child has gone to the Big Island, visited a taro patch, Pearl Harbor, and my younger child has gone to HTY plays and visited gardens. They have participated in JPO programs, Makerspace activities, Lego Robotics, and volunteer opportunities as "Big Buddies" in the preschool classrooms on campus. As a family and newcomers to this school, we love it and would recommend it to everyone.

We moved here this summer and are geographically assigned to Kailua Elementary. Having very old reviews on Great Schools describing an old Female principal I wasn't sure what to expect. We have found a wonderful new home at KES! The principal is fairly new (several years) to the school. He has brought such a great enthusiasm, love of the community and support of the students that really shows. My daughter has an amazing teaching TEAM in her first grade class. She came in with an out of state IEP that was supported, addressed and transitioned seamlessly. KES encourages parental/family participation within the school. I am very pleased the education and tools were are receiving.

We started at KES on the second day of second grade having switched from a private school. We were beyond blessed with an amazing second grade teacher right out the gates. Which we now find ourselves comparing the rest to and hence the four stars. Aside from our challenges each year with obtaining the right teacher for my child, KES is a great public school - in this day and age. The principal is fairly new and very enthusiastic about working with the staff, faculty, students, parents and community. He is very confident in the staff and teachers providing a safe child centered environment for the students. He works well with the various departments and parent groups to make sure all areas are cared for. He definitely has an invested attitude and mind. KES offers an awesome Specials Program on a fixed schedule - Arts, Music, PE, Library and Hawaiian - which allows the students to participate in these key subjects along with the rest of their learning. They not only focus on academics but developing the whole child by encouraging the students to get involved with the many service clubs on campus and community. I can go on about all that they offer but you can google their website for more info. In any case, the children (and staff/faculty) are always striving for Honu PRIDE, for themselves and to make everyone proud. You see it in class, around campus, at the pep rallies in the morning, on their quizzes and at the end of the quarter assemblies. KES has their challenges just like any other school dealing with many children, parents, staff, and faculty. And they try their very best to do their best each new day. I will continue to work with them until the principal can no longer help, which I find that almost impossible with his eagerness to find solutions. Thank you The KES.

Unimpressed by the very Unprofessional Principal and Faculty. Worst Elementary School. I am by far NOT the only Parent that feels this way about this particular School. This School has a high rate of children being pulled out of the school due to the unprofessional actions of the Principal and Faculty.

I have a child in the early intervention preschool. His preschool teacher and aide are excellent and have worked wonders with my "difficult" child. However, as a military family who has experienced multiple schools around the country, I am frustrated by the lack of enthusiasm at this school. Parents do not seem to be involved. At a principal breakfast all parents were invited to attend, one other parent beside myself attended. Teachers are nowhere to be found on curriculum nights when the students are showing off all their hard work. I recognize the importance of a contract between administration and teachers, but what of the societal obligation we have to our children to encourage and motivate them to succeed before, during, and after school hours?
