Our 8-year-old son has been a student since K and he has autism as well other medical conditions. The school has been instrumental in helping our son reach levels that we ourselves did not even think were possible! I could not dream of a better experience than the one we have with North Idaho STEM!

My time at this school was the worst four years of my life. The faculty only locks on to a select few students and only provides resources and opportunities to them. The teachers would abuse their power, going out of their way to humiliate students. As you may have seen from other reviews here, the teachers were downright bullies at times, definitely not creating a positive environment for the students. The P.E. teacher was one of the repeat offenders here, mocking students who were dressed heavily or sweating excessively during class. The project teacher forced me to stand outside of the classroom for talking. This was the middle of one of the coldest winters in a long while and I was forced to stand OUTSIDE in 10 degree weather without a jacket for simply TALKING (this was that cold spell of January, 2014 that was referred to as a polar vortex). I will note that the social studies teacher is the one exception to this horrible teaching style. He was the only positive part of my experience at STEM and was the only teacher in the entire school that actually prepared me for college. It’s pretty ironic that the only decent teachers here weren’t even teaching classes related to the whole STEM narrative. The punishment system, “pink slips,” were handed out for the most minor of offenses. This is problematic as it wouldn’t take many of these to get suspended (i.e. 5-6 slips). I once got one for holding playground wood chips in my hand (I was only 11 or so at this time). While students were being reprimanded for minor offenses, the bullies remained unpunished. I’ve attended public schools at various points in my life, but I can confidently say that the bullies at STEM were the most savage. The words I’d been called there are far too inappropriate to repeat in this review. I asked for help with these situations from teachers on so many occasions, although I never received it and was often blamed for being bullied. Ultimately, this school operates under the guise that it is preparing students for the harsh reality of life. The funniest part is that I’ve since graduated college with a successful job in a technological field, but it was no thanks to STEM. Please do your children a favor and put them in the Lakeland School District or CDA Charter instead. They will be far better off doing the dual enrollment programs from either of these options than at STEM. This school left long term negative impacts on me, therefore I cannot recommend this hellscape.

With everything I have I can tell you that all the negative reviews here are right on par w what we experienced. I know as you read this you have no idea who I am, I am a parent who had high hopes for my kids at this school and both my kids were passing everything getting A’s, B’s and a few C’s (which is not easy at that school) and yet I still pulled them out over the utterly ridiculous experiences we encountered with teachers and the administration as a whole. If you really care about your child you will not send them to North Idaho Charter Academy.. In the beginning you think you’re so lucky because your kid has been been chosen by the charter school lottery system in place, but after about six months you will start questioning what actuality is going on there if not sooner. Their high scores are no indication that the school is actually successful w all students but rather the few who haven’t been pressured or bullied to leave. I wish there was a more accurate count of the total students who who have gone there to show the number who have stayed and those who left. It’s not that the the work is so academically difficult, it’s that they play games with your kid, by not being clear on expectations for their workload or behavior. Of course it makes sense to not tolerate class disruptions with bad behavior, however it isn’t about just that but rather how much of a robot can a kid be? Staying very still, no fidgeting, no getting so excited you blurt out an answer to a question, you didn’t take your coat off fast enough when returning to the classroom from recess, no running in the school yard, playing mind games with homework instructions so that there is confusion on what is supposed to be turned in…….Essentially being…. Kids. It’s crazy and these expectations are really what they focus on rather than the excitement of teaching and learning. I feel bad for the kids who are stil enrolled there now.

I will say this is a fantastic learning program (and that is it). As a parent, I feel like we are left out of the loop with communication. If we ask for communication, we are made to feel like we are on a "need to know" basis. The school feels that the children should be coming home and telling the parents everything they need to know. There is no written expectations given to the parents or a "lesson plan" of any sort. A parent must solely rely on the words of their very young children. My children are terrified to miss a day of school. If they miss a day of school it will take their A grade to a D because now they have ONE missing assignment and will take them weeks to make up. They hate doing google classroom because the communication piece is lacking there too. This school prides themselves on the whole "anti bullying" platform yet the teachers and staff are the biggest offenders of this. The only access you have to anyone at this school is email and all questions stop at the front desk. They definitely control the kids through fear and intimidation. I keep my children enrolled in this school because of the high level of learning. In short, love the learning not thrilled about staff and administration. God forbid you have a question about grades, teaching techniques or try to communicate with the teacher without them pulling in the principle to battle their battles for them. Just like the Ex Director always says... "this school is not for everyone" They do a good job of weeding out who it is NOT for. This is strictly an academic school. There are no sports or teams. If your child choses to do band, they won't even be allowed into a PE class. To have 8 hours of no physical activity except a 30 minute lunch break (to eat and play total) is hard on the kids and doesn't keep them fit, encouraged in sports/team activities or give them a break from the rigorous program. School is from 8-4 and if you want to enroll your kids in some type of "team" sport you are rushing to get their homework done, to practice and back home before it's 8pm at night. Very challenging to keep the kids engaged in sports if it makes their nights long.

We moved from a private school to STEM and suffered from couture shock! We weren’t allowed on campus, couldn’t easily talk to the teachers and were forced to attend the parent-teacher conference with our child so the teacher could ignore us and instead shove a finger in our child’s face, yelling at them in front of us.

At quarter end, a student in our class was caught with stollen homework papers in his backpack. A couple of those assignments belonged to my child. I asked if my child would receive the credit since it was clear the assignments had been turned into “the box” but were removed by this student. I was given a one word answer… NO. Both the teacher and principal refused to discuss the situation any further.

I am not saying that all teachers are bad there. I know a few of them personally and I know they would do ANYTHING for their students. We would have stayed if we could have any of those amazing teachers.

Sadly, reality hit me after we left STEM and enrolled in a homeschool system. We went to a social event where all homeschool kids were invited and I ended up meeting many wives and children of teachers working at STEM. To me, that was all I needed to understand I made the best choice for my child.

As a student who attends STEM Charter Academy, it has a very rigorous education, but they fully prepare students for college life and education. As a junior I spent most of the year at North Idaho College, which allowed me to see how college life works. Majority of the reason I was successful at transitioning into college classes was because of the study skills and work ethic STEM taught me. STEM has made transitioning to a university after graduation less stressful by introducing that type of life during high school.

North Idaho Stem Charter Academy is a great school for preparing students for the future. Everyone is given the chance to succeed and given opportunities to help forge a path for the future. This school has high standards for each student which means that you will need to strive to better yourself. One criticism for the Stem would be to not hold students for hours for not meeting the dress code. I would recommend that they have spars for the students so they do not miss class.

As a parent of three students, STEM has provided an opportunity for my children to be challenged in positive environment that promotes a strong work ethic. We are so fortunate to have teachers and staff who truly care about about students while helping to develop their character. STEM is creating our future leaders through their culture of “working hard and being nice.”

My daughters go to this school and I want to say its been the best thing for them. Stem Charter is tough and I understand that is frustrating on some parents. They teach discipline, respect and structure along with a tough curriculum. I believe all the negative reviews are people trying to compare it to regular public school. This is a step above and if you're wanting to come here then you need to learn to accept that your kid may struggle until they catch up. They are no B.S. The students coming out have massive scholarships. I advise parents to look up the schools ranking and see what type of students they produce. I love this school and love the teachers.

Bullying is not acceptable and is dealt with immediately.

Posted: September 16, 2020

STEM Charter is a wonderful school. Students are excited to learn and they are top not only in the state but nationwide.

Posted: September 16, 2020

Homework should not consume the evenings and it does not here at STEM Charter. We value family.

Posted: September 16, 2020

Teachers model work ethic and rigorous habits of academic progress while they stick to their expectations of students and support them along the way.

Posted: September 16, 2020

It is the expectation, not the exception. Staff teach to strong character daily, not just during an annual assembly of sorts.

Posted: September 16, 2020

The leaders support teachers, parents, and students toward optimal achievement opportunities.

Posted: September 16, 2020

Yes, as long as the methods that support the differences follow the school mission. NO SCHOOL can be all things to all people.

Posted: September 16, 2020

Kids make mistakes and have "moments" that give staff opportunity to support their character growth. If a student cannot Be Nice and Work Hard, they do not get to be at school.

Posted: September 16, 2020

If you are looking for that rare school that follows their stated MISSION and provides honest feedback to parents and students, all while avoiding the U.S. epidemic of grade inflation, this is the school for you. What quality parent does not want their kids to have a competitive edge in life?

Posted: September 16, 2020

All homework expectations are clearly outlined by the teachers at the beginning of every school year. Every year my child has brought home an introductory paper from each specific teacher outlining the expectations for the child in the classroom and for homework.

Posted: September 16, 2020

Expectations for students are clearly outlined at the beginning of every year for every class! My child was struggling with seventh grade literature and his teacher took time out of her busy schedule to sit down and explain to him in further detail what the expectations were. After this meeting my child’s grade went from a C to an A!

Posted: September 16, 2020

From the very beginning of their education at STEM these children are taught that teamwork is an essential part of life if one wishes to be successful at it. These children have to work together to solve problems to build models and to create presentations just like the real world. One has to have integrity, compassion and respect to achieve any of this in life.

Posted: September 16, 2020

One could not ask for a better leadership program than this school has to offer. What the Thompson’s have created here with the help of their extraordinary staff is something truly special.

Posted: September 16, 2020

As stated, the teachers are willing to take time to further explain the expectations to each student but one has to understand that at STEM the objective is to teach a child at a higher level than that of the public school education system in order to prepare them for success in the real world. Expectations are higher at STEM and unfortunately not every child is cut out for it.

Posted: September 16, 2020

STEM Charter has a zero bullying policy! Having a child that has been in the school since kindergarten and that is now in the eighth grade we have seen a few bullies. These children are typically dealt with swiftly and accordingly as bullying has no place in school or the real world and the faculty fully understands this.

Posted: September 16, 2020

Exceptional! You don’t know what you don’t know until you know it! Knowing what we know now, I wouldn’t put any child through a different school if it were up to me! STEM is the way of the future!

Posted: January 11, 2020

Grades 1-4 have only math each night and it slowly increases as they get into higher grades.

Posted: January 11, 2020

Large majority of teachers are incredibly helpful and all are passionate about their jobs. If your student isn't learning, they are more than happy to tell you how it can be improved on the classroom side of things.

Posted: January 11, 2020

Respect is absolutely a focus- your kids will learn to be respectful of authority or they will have consequences.

Posted: January 11, 2020

The expectations are black and white. You know exactly what you signed up for at the start of the year. If you and your kids don't want to work that hard, don't bother attending.

Posted: January 11, 2020

Students are all treated with the same expectations regardless of their learning abilities- just like the real world.

Posted: January 11, 2020

There are always going to be those kids who you wish didn't attend the same school as your own. The teachers are not perfect at catching every moment because they, too, are human. It is present far less than typical school places.

Posted: January 11, 2020

My kids struggled when first attending. The pace is fast, the teachers are fast and expect a lot, and the administration is firm about their expectations. My kids were straight A's in private school and dropped to B's, C's, and D's for the first quarter. They had very few friends and weren't sure how they felt overall about moving schools. Two years later, they both love it, are getting A's and B's again, and have plenty of strong friendships. I highly recommend the school if you are willing to stick out the transition phase which is harder for older kids and you have to be willing as a parent to work just as hard as your child at helping them be successful.

At no time did they offer to help my son with understanding expectations. see below recap of experience

Posted: November 1, 2019

See email exchange:
Everyone, I still have concerns about how (my child) is receiving instruction on his school work. I feel the mismanagement and mixed messages that are happening are a big part of his inability to grasp what he is supposed to be doing. He is still the main responsible party. However, there should also be ownership by the school as well. I am very disappointed at the lack of ownership by the staff for their student’s success at navigating the 7th grade. I am a quality improvement and data collection specialist. I am very familiar with processes and I feel the process (my child) has received from the 7th grade program thus far has been sub-par. I have examples of misguided instruction on several assignments. I will bring them. I would like to meet again to see what you can do, as the school that cares for their students, to encourage (my child’s) success, as well as being open to the possibility that your program could use improvement. Thank you.

Posted: November 1, 2019

There was no help offered to my son to understand what the expectations were, extra help in teaching him, offering of tutoring or resources of any kind. see below for recap

Posted: November 1, 2019

I believe he was bullied by the teachers. In regards to the “data” this school presents I ask you: shouldn’t their “success” also be measured by how many students choose to leave due to issues like ours? This school should be required to provide exit interviews to families and be required to submit them to any persons involved in funding decisions

Posted: November 1, 2019

My son attended this school for 6 weeks. After 3 weeks he was failing 2 classes. He had been a straight A student prior. We met with the teachers over our concerns and were met with “it is his fault” impression. We pressed on, hoping it would get better. A week later he received an unfair grade. I emailed my concerns (the only form of communication available) and the notes in the leadership question is the email exchange that occurred. After this exchange I removed my son from this school. Within the 2 weeks since changing schools he is already getting As and Bs again. Shame on this behavior. Think twice before sending your child to this school. (the emails were not altered at all except to remove names).

Posted: November 1, 2019

See the detailed account below of our experience. At the meeting we were told, "he shouldn't have any homework except math". The next week he had a cell model due, that was to be completed at home. And he brought home work EVERYDAY more than just math. Grammar packets, History notebooks, etc.

This school does instill fear of authority and stifles creativity.

Posted: June 25, 2019

The leadership belittles and bullies children and parents to get them leave the school. They refuse to do any testing so you can sesee if you child ilhas any learning disabilities. "Why do ypu want to label your child so badly?" Really, this from the administration? Should have been a red flag, or your 1st grader coming home crying from being bullied not by student, but the administration, should be a red flag. Final straw for any parent I imimagine would be when that principle shouts at you, with your 1st grade son crying on your lap, that your autistic sons only problem is bad parenting, and continues on repeat until your family leaves thinking, did that really just happen? Really? Why did I let my children go here so long??

Posted: June 25, 2019

It took 3 calls tothe state board of education and a call from the state directly to the administration to even get a meeting to discuss a 504 or an IEP.

Posted: June 25, 2019

The kids are not the ones doing the bullying at this school.

Posted: June 25, 2019

When you look at their test scores you think, Wow! That is amazing that my children have an opportunity to go to a school like this! You watch the videos and imagine your child having such an interactive and motivational school day! Then your child is accepted and it soon starts....panic attacks, crying, emotional outbursts, continuous anxiety about not being good enough, getting the dreaded pink slips that are dealt out like candy...no running on the playground,...yeah ...10 hr. Days but don't run on the woodchips or you'll get a pink slip, get another one and you'll spend the rest of the day, 5, 6 hrs, in front of the principals office, not even able to work on school work .....you must simply contemplate the failure you have become for the rest of the day....or if you are lucky you'll get sent home for getting upset or crying about having to sit there all day. ..... As the parent at first you think your kid must be misbehaving......but then you see how they treat you and you realize, oh, it's not my kid ....it's them! But what about the test scores?? How do all the other kids do it?? Then you see the year book and you notice there are hardley any kids in the freshman class, even less sophmores and juniors and less than half dozen seniors? Really .....ohhhh....that's how they do it.....my experiance at this school made me appreciate all other public schools and changed my favorable opinion of charter schools.....can they all be this bad or maybe it's just this one?

Posted: June 25, 2019

My kindergartener only had about an hour of homework each night but my 2nd and 4th grader were both doing home work through dinner and until bed time. The principal said it should only take 20 minutes per night, just not true

Posted: April 29, 2019

They seem to do a good job. They stay involved with the kids and know them all by name. I think that makes the kids more receptive to their leadership.

Posted: April 29, 2019

It does seem to be looked at as only 1 way of learning. People dont all learn well with the same methods of teaching and I wish that they had some tutoring or something to help kids when they are struggling. It's very fast paced and I can see how easy it would be for a kid to get behind.

Posted: April 29, 2019

I have seen may cases of bullying and have also contacted my child's teachers about situations. It is never dealt with.

Posted: April 29, 2019

My child is very affectionate and really enjoys that her teachers have all been very receptive to her being friendly. None of them have made her feel like she needs to stop bothering them.

Posted: April 29, 2019

I know that there are those kids that just wont be respectful and there just isnt anything you can do to get that to change. The fact that they are fast to show the kids that these behaviors are not acceptable helps the kids to learn the right way to behave and treat others.

Posted: April 29, 2019

Overall we are proud to have our child be a part of this program. She doesnt want to go anywhere else. She has learned a lot. There is not a school that I know of that has their elementary students writing papers in MLA format and putting together power point presentations better than most adults. Bullying is everywhere. Leaving would not change that.

Posted: April 29, 2019

The kids spend a longer than average day at school and it's nice that every night they only have 1 page of math as homework. The kids have time to get the rest done in the classroom and they like to work with them on time management.

I come to school counting down the days until i can go to lakeland. Almost every day I come to school and get called an illegal Alien or a wall climbing Scumbag (im mexican btw). As long as the bullies are good with the teachers the teacher doesn't really care.

Posted: March 6, 2019

Posted: October 3, 2017

The students learn very early to have no respect for the school administrators because of their heavy handed approach.

Posted: October 3, 2017

I do like the environment they have created at the school. However, the school leadership will not listen to parents, and it seems that they would rather not have the parents involved in any way.

Posted: October 3, 2017

This school is the best option in the area. When the school first opened it was a welcoming environment. In the last couple of years the administration has become very arrogant. They seem to think that because the students get good test scores that means they are doing a good job. The students get good scores because they are good students with parents that care about their education, it has nothing to do with how the school is run.

Homework policy is consistent throughout the school--emphasis on math in particular.

If you want your child to experience the extreme pressures of corporate life as a child then this is a good school. I witnessed how poor teachers pressure kids without giving them the tools or helping them to succeed. Parents will teach 99% of all work that is required. The school talks a good game but doesn't come close to the mark. Pay attention to your student they will never want to go to college after such a terrible experience!

Disappointing. Staff is overly focused on standardized test scores, and comparing them to area schools. Uniform policy gets more militant every year. Zero student enrichment in anything besides math and science. Actual spending per student is less than area public schools. Character development is non existent, unfortunate as many staff members might benefit from a refresher course.

They follow the same curriculum and the process in spite of your child abilities .

If your child is too smart in a particular area
Example :Kindergarten ,he/she still have to learn the sounds again or numbers again just like any other public school. They focus on the kids who are behind to catch up ,but there are no advancement program for kids who might be bored .

Kids develop good leadership skills and they have high expectations.

School develops strong character in its students like Integrity and respect .
But nothing for compassion , the school has no time to discuss anything on compassion .

Teachers can't make a lot of decisions by themselves, it is kind of sad. Most of the time they are afraid of what the administrators would say.

H.W is focused mainly on math , most of the other work can be completed in school .

This school is absolutely amazing! All the teachers are wonderful. The kindergarten teacher in specific is my favorite! She is so much fun and knows exactly what to do with all the children and their different learning styles. You'd have to be crazy to think anything negative about this teacher and the school.

North Idaho STEM Charter Academy is one of Idaho's top-performing schools. Students scored second in math and fifth for language arts on the Idaho SBAC's. The school provides exceptional opportunities for students. It was the only high school chosen by NASA to have students build and launch a satellite into space. The academics are rigorous and students are held to a high standard in every area, including their behavior. There is no tolerance for bullying, disruption to the learning environment and the rules are the rules and strictly enforced without apology. There is a strong sense of community and a lot of opportunities for students with a strong work ethic and supportive parents to excel. I am grateful my children have the opportunity to receive the quality of education they are receiving at STEM.

The teachers at this school are top notch and highly regarded. They truly love what they are doing. They are working at STEM by choice and the school holds teachers to the same high standard as students.

There is sometimes an hour of homework, which I don't feel is unreasonable. Students do have a study hall during the school day. Also, because it is a four-day school week they have all day Friday off and are able to work on homework and projects before the weekend, freeing up family time.

All students are held to the same standards. Expectations are high, character education is emphasized, as is a strong work ethic. Discipline is enforced. It is a safe learning environment.

This school is a horrific experience for young children, they punish children in the first week of school and lose them, then they lie about it and hang up on the parents. They whole set up is not good for children starting out in school.
