Rockland is a historic neighborhood small school serving a tight-knit and well-heeled community. Kids have every advantage, every resource, available. In such a small setting kids are noticed and build strong relationships, even across grades. The drawback? It can be hard to escape first impressions and reset if social strife occurs. Also the school isn't equipped to handle students with physical disabilities. Families with wheelchair bound or students or students that can't do stairs have been divided - sending those kids to other Libertyville schools. Our child has loved every teacher thus far and communication home has been constant.

Rockland Elementary is about 10-15 years behind in its teaching methods. Not only that, but staff are untrained on the most current and appropriate methods for supporting students with special needs. Do yourself a favor and look at any other D70 school, and if youre really smart, get out of Libertyville. This town struggles to move beyond small town politics and social cliques that are obsessed with popularity. Its like a bad 90s movie on repeat that no one wants to move on from. If you must stay in Libertyville, enroll your child in Oak Grove and stay away from D70.

We couldnt be more disappointed with our familys experience at Rockland. Of all the D70 schools, this is the one to really avoid. Yes, its a quaint, walkable neighborhood school - but education is mediocre at best and support services are lacking. Half the parents went to the local high school and organize their childrens social circle accordingly. Whats truly heartbreaking is the way the school community ignores families from diverse and low-income families, treats them as if theyre invisible.

Our experience at Rockland was such a positive part of our children's growing up. The staff is caring, the community is warm and down to earth, and the building itself is nostalgic. It's a small school with lots of heart. The special education staff is well-staffed and dedicated, and the teachers are cream of the crop. Our family made lasting friendships with other Rockland families and our kids were well prepared for middle school. We lucked out buying our home in the Rockland boundaries.

The teachers are very involved and has open communication with the parents. If you have any questions or concerns, they're very responsive. Students have a manageable amount of homework and are excelling.

Super high property taxes for this school district but Mr. Knapp, the principal, really is biased towards his staff, some of whom are ineffective and bad teachers. The parents, property tax payers and kids end up losing.

The school tossed out all grades and replaced them with a nebulous system of "meets" and "approaching". Most moms I know hate this because you can't figure out how your kids are doing. Also, there are way too many substitutes at this school.

Principal Knapp does an amazing job of keeping our kids safe. He keeps the parents informed and always makes the exact decisions I would expect as a parent. The teachers are caring and thoughtful.

Both my children attended Rockland school (then went to Highland and Libertyville HS). The staff and administration was responsive, receptive and tuned into the children and parents. Rockland is a US Dept of Education 'School of Excellence' (as are all Libertyville's Elementary and Middle Schools) and you'll feel the pride and leadership from the teachers and staff every day, as they nurture and educate your children.

We love everything about Rockland including the teachers, other parents, and principal. It's a wonderful, caring place that will go above and beyond to help children.

Math program weak. Most of the kids who are good at math have parents who supplement the sucky Every Day Math program. The ISAT scores are impressive but misleading and can be attributed in large part to parents/ demographics, quite a few Science and Engineering types. I am also guessing that some of the very low ISAT scores by some students are not counted in the mean because these students are classified as special ed.

My two children had an excellent education here. Families get to know each other well as there are many great opportunities to get involved. The new (2012) principal is fantastic - he creates an optimistic environment for teaching and learning.

My children's teachers at Rockland have been exceptionally qualified, dedicated and caring. Many of the parents are down to earth and really value education. I was surprised, however, in the polarity of reading levels in my daughter's first grade class at the end of the school year. A good quarter of the class read below grade level, but then another quarter read way above grade level. Perhaps this reflects the demographics at the school? In addition, I believe there is too much funding and attention directed toward special education and special needs programs. This is not to say that these programs are not important, but if you look at the Rockland school staff, there are 4 special education/ paraeducators, 1 resource teacher, 1 OT specialist and 3 speech teachers serving a student body of 320 kids. No wonder our property taxes are outrageous! In contrast, the gifted program relies heavily on parent volunteers.
