Since admin has changed the culture has absolutely worsened. Teachers are minimally involved. Education is not challenging enough for those who ask for it. Parent teacher conferences are an utter superficial joke. There is NO Science Olympiad support any longer, despite parents proactively petitioning and trying to help students on their own. The board is biased towards sports, and the sports is still bare minimum (like boys basketball, truly minimally coached and played) . Food is also truly horrible and unhealthy and repetitive for students. Would never send my kids here until there major reform.

I would highly recommend this school, as it provides utmost dedication and quality to a student centered learning experience and creates an environment for students to learn about the possibilities of schooling.

This is an amazing school! Almost everyone that wrote a review said there are “teacher’s pets” but really, those are just rumors passed on by the older kids. Once you get to know the teachers, they’re really nice! 6th grade this year is like a community, where everyone knows everyone and they’re pretty much nice to everyone. The older kids might be a bit harsh, but that’s why you don’t generally get involved with them. Overall, this is an AMAZING school which I would recommend to students.

Good school but not good for new students. Everyone knows each other so they have all developed friend groups by the time you get to the school so that can be hard but the education system is good just not the social part

I would like to respond to the student who put their review in on December 12, 2016. I was a student there as well and I thought my year was actually pretty decent. I wouldn't want to get into the name game but i'll tell you there were several teachers there who don't teach good enough. I was a seventh grader there last year and my science teacher never taught us at all. Since I had her 6th period (right after lunch) we would go there laughing and giggling and she would just sit there listening to us. She never cared what we did and would be texting in class. In fact I heard that she was watching bad stuff in class. I got good grades in her class but I think that was because of my hard work. Plus, she used a lot of favoritism. My math teacher also never taught good enough and we had several complains for her by many students. The one teacher who I know is by far the best teacher at Woodlawn Middle School, is Ms Sarah Gordon. She is an LA teacher and I can guarantee that her teaching is the best. The girl who sent the comment I am pretty sure was a girl who I shared social studies class with and I do believe she might've been mistreated. I think Woodlawn needs to know more about their teachers and I wish in the following years they do change.

I'm a new 7th grader at this school, and I hope my review can help other new students. I feel like Woodlawn Middle School are not the best at accepting new students and helping them feel included. A peer mentor will be assigned to you to take you to your classes and be your friend, but that's not what my peer mentor did. I was really excited to get to know my peer mentor better on the first day of school, but I was not able to find her at all. She was supposed to meet me at my locker and take me to classes, but instead I was left all alone lost in the hallways. I remember she told me that I could sit with her at lunch, but I did not even know where she sat. I ended up sitting with a table of girls that I did not know at all but seemed nice. It's almost the end of the first semester, and I still feel like I do not fit in with any group of girls here. Transferring in middle school is much harder than elementary school. What I realized is that everyone has their own friend group and don't really want to include anyone new. There have been multiple times where I was just completely left out at my table while the girls were just talking about things they don't want to tell me about. I end up so many times crying at home wishing I was still at my old school. At my old school, I had an awesome group of friends and everyone at school knew me. I hope Woodlawn will try to improve on making new students feel more welcomed, and I hope this review will help new students feel more prepared when they come to Woodlawn.

I'm a new student at this school (8th grade) and to be honest, the beginning was really rough. (And I'm listing my whole experience to help other new students so bear with me if it's long). It's really hard being a new student in middle school. I didn't know anybody and there were times when I wanted to go back to my old school because I knew everybody there and I had a lot of friends. There were days when I came home crying. And that's the whole truth. They assign you a peer mentor who is supposed to help you and be your friend. My peer mentor didn't deserve to be a peer mentor. The school counselor had to ask her to take me to my locker and the whole time, she was talking to her friends. She didn't help me get to any of my classes. But I met a girl who introduced me to her friend group. They weren't exactly very friendly but I didn't mind because they weren't mean either, they just weren't very welcoming or approachable. The next day, I caught the girl whispering to her friend and out of the blue right after that, her friend asked me to sit with her friends at lunch. Which leads me to believe that I didn't fit in with the girl's group and wanted me to sit somewhere else. This other girl's group is a few people smaller but they do seem more approachable and friendly. (Although there is one person who I don't like). So it's been a rocky road. I feel like this school doesn't really accept new students that well. The only new kids who are accepted are the cool and outgoing kids. If you're shy, it's going to be pretty hard to find a group. The new boy was accepted pretty well and I somehow found a group with a lot of luck and tears along the way but the other new girls don't have any friends. All 3 of them are "different" (the way they dress, their appearance) and this school demonstrates the stereotype of if you don't look cool and you're not loud and outgoing, then fend for yourself because no one will even try to talk to you. The only reason a shy girl like me got a group was a lot of luck. I rated it 4 stars because the curriculum is good and everything else is great, but the kids aren't very welcoming to new students and it's hard to find friends if you're not outgoing. My friend group is okay but we just met so we're not really close.

I'm a student at Woodlawn Middle School and I love it. However, there have been a few teachers who definitely haven't been the best as far as their teaching methods go. All of the other staff are excellent, especially the 7th grade math teachers. We get to have a lot of extra-curricular activity options, such as volleyball and cooking club, among many other options.
