Highland Park Montessori School

My 2 and 4 yo are at this school and have been for over a year. We LOVE it. The teachers are kind, warm, and teach kids independence and community. I have not had a bad experience across several classrooms. I used to run a school, and feel very comfortable recommending this one. We drive 20 m. each way to get our girls there. Totally worth it!

I am a licensed teacher with over a decade of teaching experience, and I commute more than 40 minutes to bring my two children, ages 2 and 4, to this remarkable school. When my son first started at Highland Park Montessori at 2 (now 4), he had a very difficult time transitioning. He had just had a new baby sister and was going through a lot. He would cry hysterically at drop off each day, but his amazing teachers always greeted him with love, kindness, and super-human patience. They supported him (and me) through a difficult transition time in our lives and soon he started begging to go to school! The growth my children have experienced here on an academic level is incredible, but what is truly amazing is the social and emotional growth. We are so grateful to Highland Park Montessori for the high quality education they provide, and the immense love they show for all of the children and the community!

We have moved to highland park last year. My two year old attends this school. The teachers at school are very professional and very caring. They always have my child's best interest at their hearts and very focused on my son's personal development.

My three year old daughter attends this school and has had a very positive experience. The Montessori method allows for her to discover things on her own, and to interact with children of different age groups. There's a good balance of indoor and outdoor activities, there are well-planned field trips, and there are ample opportunities for parental involvement. I have not experienced the sense of crowding that another reviewer noted. The school allows students to move between rooms (this is a common Montessori practice) and it is possible that the prior reviewer was in a room where many students had temporarily congregated.

In the 3-6 yr old classroom, my daughter had a miserable teacher and she soon picked up bad (aggressive) behavior and a surprising smart mouth. We pulled her out of this daycare (and that, unfortunately, is what it is) and she began sleeping better and her behavior improved IMMEDIATELY. Be sure to tour this school: note how long it takes for someone to even let you in the door, the crowded, confusing classrooms that are never calm, the bathroom that is often dirty. Not sure if it is disorganization or disregard, but getting phone calls or emails returned or talking to someone in the office was always a problem -- often lots of delay or no response at all. Other parents were not particularly friendly either.

This is a popular school and that means the families include both those who picked this school based on popularity and those who truly value the Montessori ideas. The result: lack of community cohesiveness. My child has attended for 2 years. The first was great, due in large part to her teacher. This year has been a more daycare than Montessori experience. Some of the child's classmates are toxic -- one is part of a family going thru a nuclear war of a divorce. The teacher talks a good game but is terribly negative with the children, more interested in discipline than learning. And my child no longer likes school. We're making a change, and a true, AMI accredited school is on the list.
