I attend the DePaul school from 2008 to 2014 and let me just say it was truly a nightmare. Starting at only first grade we were only given a 10 minute recess. This isn't enough time for kids to explore and have fun. The rest of the day we would spend reciting site words and sitting in desk. Kids became very ansty and acted out. All the kids there had learning disabilities so time to let off steam was be very important. When kids would act out teachers would commonly yell at them which isn't helpful to children who are already special needs. I personally had no behavioral problems but I would get very scared and overwhelmed when teachers try to reprimand kids because they would loss control themselves. They never taught kids copying skills.
They're math program was so awful that once I reached middle school they tried to reteach me long devision and multiplication because they realized the methods they taught me weren't going to work once I had to do algebra. They never taught me my times tables either. I was so behind in math in high school I got all c- and had to do hours of math tutoring and summer school just to get by. I have been unable to pass a math class in college.
Starting in the 3rd grade I started to get very badly bullied which the school would basically brush over. It was incredible clear and all the teachers new it was happening. When my mom reported it the first and a few times after that they simply responded with we will talk to the kids. After my moms final report all they said was sorry she's just an easy target.
This all being said I attended the DePaul School 6 years ago so I really hope things have changed but its still under mostly the same administrations. Please think wisely before you send your kids to this school.

The de Paul School cares about each of our families. We work very hard to ensure our students experience a top-notch academic environment that directly speaks to each of their needs ensuring their success during their years with us and beyond. We have very high expectations for everyone -- students and educators -- on our campus each school day with regard to behavior and integrity, which help us realize a very secure and peaceful school. However, we also understand that our approach does not meet every family's expectations. Our teachers, administrators and staff are compassionate, innovative and highly-skilled in their approach to teaching children who learn differently. We appreciate all feedback as it helps us self reflect and improve.

Caution... There is a lot of lip service within these walls. In preparing to write my review, I scrolled thru past reviews and I've noticed some of them seem to be written by staff claiming the same lip service. I'm sure you've seen the commercials. That should be your first hint! The sales pitch sounds perfect, in fact, too perfect.... It's even better in person! The teachers have no more "special" training than the teachers at JCPS. Yes, the classrooms are organized and free from clutter but they are not calm. Many of the teachers have short fuses, are unable to connect and can't relate. Honestly, three or four just need to throw in the towel and retire.
Don't let little Julie or little Johnny have a rough day because straight to the office they'll go. Exactly what children with anxiety need. Children with learning differences and social issues have rough days, heck, sometimes rough years! Oh, and, little Julie or Johnny better understand the consequences the first time. The Head of School's (you'll know immediately when you meet him) arrogance fills the hallways. No doubt elitist mentality. That's fine for some I suppose, but all children put their pants on the same way. Johnny is not better than Julie! They claim to be big on diversity and compassion - not so much. If your checkbook is big enough, they most certainly are. I had the opportunity to speak with another parent who informed me that that they make their list of children (who they don't want to keep there) a month or two after the fall session begins. If your little cupcake isn't perfect, you'll be gone soon. One other thing... read that contract. They mean EVERY word. Do your research, reach out to other parents on social media. Most everyone in this circle shares the same doctors and therapists, ask them, they are seeing unpleasant results with de Paul - I wished I had listened to ours. This review sounds awful, in fact completely negative. The only true positives I have give are that the front receptionist is quiet wonderful, the school is clean, very safe and has fantastic lunch.

Just like the school says....Experience the de Paul difference!! What a wonderful experience this school offers for children that learn differently. The environment is calm, organized, hands on, and offers such and exceptional educational experience. We noticed changes almost immediately in my daughters reading confidence and attitude towards school. Not that she was unhappy at her previous school but now she comes home almost giddy with excitement. What a difference de Paul makes in students.

Absolutely terrible. The principle blamed my brother on being bullied. It was not right and completely outrageous. They say they are there to help with learning differences but my brother is behind for his age

The teachers at this school are amazing. They know how to deal with students who learn differently and they work with each student individually to achieve success. The student/teacher ratio is very low and they emphasize self-esteem and success. The school has done wonders for my granddaughter. A truly amazing school and worth every penny.

My daughter started the 4th grade at de Paul in November 2010. We went from spending 2.5 hours every night doing one-on-one homework with her, to about an hour of homework (which included her reading time) that she completed on her own. Their philosophy is that the student should be doing the homework independently so that their teacher can see what they mastered and what needs more instruction. Projects are done at school (they don't want to see how great a project the parents can do, they want to see what the kids can do). Teachers challenge the kids, but in a way that doesn't make them feel like failures. The kids are great too, amazingly helpful to one another. This is the perfect environment for kids who learn differently.....although expensive, we'll figure out the finances somehow to ensure our daughter can continue to thrive.
