It's fine, but it could definitely use more than a Fall Carnival every now and then for families. There's way too many kids who don't follow the expectations and get bad grades, bringing its average down. Due to Iit being in an area in Downtown that is pretty far from a lot of students and has a lot of crime and pollution compared to other schools, the safety issue is alarming.

DONT WALK RUN FROM THIS SCHOOL the teaching is ok if your put on a good team but i am in 7th right now and its just terrible there a huge gap in between the MST kids and the « reside kids » Ive been harassed and bullied numerous times the teachers dont really care about us and last year we had a teacher leave because he was beat up with hockey sticks by some students there a really big money gap in the school and we dont have any founding please dont send your kids here

I'm only in the first day 7th grade so this opinion might well change, but I'll say it anyway. My 6th grade teachers were absolutely phenomenal and I would definitely take it again (21-22 class, in the Explorers team) given the chance. I cannot stress enough how great the teachers were. I wish Meyzeek did the same looping style as Highland Middle I don't really know what to feel about my 7th grade teachers, but thus far, they seem good enough - certainly very energetic and welcoming of the students, which brings me to my primary concern about the school. The teachers and staff are fine, given a few biased exceptions. What isn't so great is the students. You will encounter name-calling, fighting, and horseplay around every corner you turn. The staff are trying to proactively resolve this problem and do have security cameras in place to identify students involved in potentially more dangerous tussles. Not just this, but the restrooms. The restrooms appear pretty good in 6th grade, but once you move to 7th, the doors become very, very short. It's not that big of a deal, considering it's the case with a good number of other JCPS schools, but the difference is pretty shocking when you've become used to the "better" ones (a very broad term - it depends on what kind of bathroom shenanigans students decide to pull, leaving the poor janitor to clean it up. He deserves a raise.) The lunch food is the same as everywhere else, but if you've been eating school lunch for multiple years, you won't get the extreme bouts of food poisoning mentioned in other reviews (to my experience, at least). One newly introduced rule is the ban of hoodies and I feel that this is a step in the wrong direction, but certainly a good way to prevent people from wearing hoods so often - another problem in the school, albeit it doesn't mean much to students. The arrival and dismissal is generally pretty smooth. I don't think I have anything else to say, but one thing you should watch out for is lines. They're generally pretty chaotic, given there's not a teacher watching over them at all times.

Great school...if your child does not have special needs of any kind. Otherwise, don't expect them to honor any accommodations on the child's IEP without a constant struggle. It's not that they will not SAY they will honor them. It's just never put into practice. Also, if your child's different, expect bullying. They will care and "look into" any incidents they become aware of....but expect nothing beyond that ti be done. If your child is self motivated and popular, by all means send them here. Otherwise, send them to Kammerer. Kemmerer knows how to handle IEPs and quell bullying and will bring out the best in your special needs teen.

If I could give it a zero I would!! My child gets bullied and defense himself but he gets in trouble while the bully is free to go. And the teachers see the ignorance but dont say anything. some of them teachers are better off working at a daycare! The behavior issues may start at home, but the teachers can also correct them when its in there presence. Tear the school down and redo it!

I have attended Meyzeek for 3 years now and am graduating in a few days, so I thought I'd leave a nice review before I go. In my experience with Meyzeek, almost all of the teachers have been open-minded and kind. I had only one teacher--of around fifteen--that might not fit that description. All of my teachers were good at their jobs; there were no classes where I felt like I wasn't learning subject content or where I felt that I was behind because of the teacher.
Homework--I feel that we were always given an appropriate amount of homework. We usually have homework for math every other day that's due the next day related to what we just learned. For English, we get an assignment on Wednesdays (usually) and have until the following Wednesday to turn it in. As for the other classes, there is not regularly scheduled homework. This means that we do have homework, just not on any particular schedule. Never did I feel overwhelmed in such a way that I thought they ought to revise their homework policy.
Teachers--I spoke to this a bit before. Of my fifteen or so teachers, there was only ever one that I felt didn't have the right attitude to teach. Other than that, my interactions with Meyzeek's teachers have been positive. While a teacher might be strict, they have never been strict to the point of inappropriate behavior. In addition to that, many teachers have high educations.
Leadership--Dr. George (current principal) has been a great leader! She started in the fall of my 6th-grade year and has been enacting ~good~ changes since. Especially during the pandemic, she has been a great leader for all of us Meyzeek bears.
Character--Meyzeek heavily enforces Bear PRIDE.
P-positive attitude
R-Respect
I-Improve self discipline
D-Do the right thing
E-Excellence through effort
In (almost) every classroom, there is a Bear PRIDE chart explaining how to show PRIDE in the classroom. In other rooms like the auditorium, gyms, cafeteria, and hallway, there are posters with the PRIDE acronym that explain how to show PRIDE in that room. We also have discussions about PRIDE and what it means to us.
Learning differences--As I personally don't have any learning differences, I can't speak to this personally. However, I know one of the teachers for those with learning differences, and she's an absolutely pleasant person.
Bullying--Not tolerated. There are several bully boxes. You can remain anonymous if you wish. Peer mediation is also in effect at this school. (I'm one of them).
