I am a recent graduate of this school and there is alot to unpack so lets begin. On the outsde this school is great, what they show the parents after hours and at special ceremonies you would think this is the best school ever, when in reality, pre-k3 all the way to kindergarten are in the same class together, 1st-3rd grade are all together 4&5th aswell. When you get to 6th-8th they get seperated, but when it comes to creative arts you could easily have a class with each grade level. This could be okay but each grade requires a certian level of care and teachers cant give that if they have to teach 3 differnt cirruculums to 3 different grades, in the same classroom together, at the same time. This school is awesome for pre-k but once you hit 1st grade it could be a train wreck, or it could be great. 1st-5th grade are just a mess, teachers come and go. Your child could have 1 teacher first grade another half of second then switch then change agin in 3rd, 4th grade seems good until 5th grade its not. It's not a stable enviorment and doesn't benefit the childs education having to adapt to new enviorments every few weeks. And the main reason why? Because TEACHERS CANNOT CONTROL THEIR CLASSROOMS. 6th-8th grade may seem better and they are, but truth is, the middle school program doesn't prepare your child for high school. The workload is non-existent. At traditional schools, kids have homework, and not just a game on the the computer tyoe homework, real work, but not here. The most kids get for math is a IXL here or there. No wonder the math scores are bad. For ELA, kids barely learn to write. Their essays are not good, they don't have the basic skills beeeded to succeed in the rest of their educational career. Your foundation for High school and college is built in middle school, and this isn't a good place to build that foundation. Not to mention, kids are often kept in the same class with the same students for years. After a certain grade kids cant come to the school. Kids need to learn how social skills, you cant do that if you see the same faces for 10 years. So before you send you kid here becouse you dont have to worry about chaning schools and teachers. Really think, is this the enviorment you want your child in. Another Kicker they just changed schools because the facilities were a mess. Now 6th-8th grade are in modulars detached from the building. Hope this was helpful!

My family and I are truly honored for the opportunity to attend this school. From the moment I inquired about the late lottery acceptance, I was connected with the remarkable and kind-hearted Ms. D. Johnson. She demonstrated patience, thoroughness, and genuine care throughout the process. When I expressed uncertainty about acceptance into the lottery, Ms. Johnson reassured me of the value of the program and the excellence of its teachers. I am deeply grateful for her guidance and support. We are excited for our Pre-K3 student to begin this journey, and we look forward to a wonderful school year with the teachers and staff.

My child came to this school to have a new start in her life. And a week after she got there, she got into a fight with a nappy headed girl and the girl ripped out my daughter’s lemonade braids off of her scalp. And this is unbelievable. All the principal did was suspend the girl for 3 days. After we went to court to sue for the hospital bills, and emotional support the judge ruled in that NAPPY HEADED LITTLE GIRLS FAVOR.

This last year was my child’s first year attending and even though I was so excited for them to go, I was met with disappointment after disappointment. The teacher they were assigned to was very clueless to her job and had a bad relationship with her para. She lacked common communication skills especially when dealing with parents and when in the classroom she had very poor classroom management. My child learned nothing at all in this class but loved going to school. The other staff at this school were great and took their time with my child and I truly appreciated that. Overall I still wouldn’t recommend this school because your experience is truly depending on whose class you’re assigned too and which click you’re a part of.

It really depends upon the teacher, yet right now my God-son is in Sabrina Khan class and she purposely tells him along with other students that she is not teaching them because they are incapable of learning. As long as she is there this school and student will suffer from her lack of guidance!

My student at this school was bullied, harresed, jumped, beat up, and even lied about. All from 4 students. The principal did nothing, so i took it to court. 2/4 got expleed but when i ask about anything happening now, my daugter still says fights AND NOTHING HAPPENS! 10/10 do not reccomend.

To start, learning starts at home! Nonetheless, I see great things in this school. I’ve encountered teachers who are full of experience! The facility is a little dated; however, there is a fresh dose of learning happening every day. As with every public school, there appear to be some minor issues (i.e., lack of volunteers, new teachers, etc.). As an involved parent, I would encourage my fellow parents to join the PTA! Our children depend on our synergy!

John Hanson Montessori has three positive things going for it: (1) an engaged principal, (2) caring staff, and (3) inquisitive students. Parent participation is key! If you are a part of the community, I encourage you to get involved (if not already) and support this great program! Our future presidents, directors, educators, etc. are relying on you!!

I am very pleased with John Hanson Montessori School. Before the pandemic I encountered a culture of people that were always welcoming and ready to help. The participation in after school activities were plentiful, well attended and planned well. The transition to virtual learning allowed us to experience a school that is communicative, organized and responsive. Being able to here how amazing ALL of my daughter’s teachers are (including creative arts - Spanish, Music, PE and Art) has me extremely excited about the future of my children’s education.

Have 2 children currently at school. Much better now since French Immersion has left. More space and creativity in school environment. Very strong PTSA which helps set the learning and administrative tone of the school. Appears to be maintaining quality teaching staff and gaining more. Administration is quietly committed to following through on Prince George's education mandates. Presence of new school nurse over past 2 years is a welcome addition. Main concern as of now is whether area will transition into a more economic and socially thriving environment. The shopping center on side of school and certain businesses across are quite ghetto. Main reason it was given a 4 instead of 5. Need to change. This school would be fantastic in Loudoun County Presence of new housing and families at National Harbor and beyond will be quite intriguing when it comes to student population and type at John Hanson.

The Teachers, the staff, the faculty are absolutely phenomenal. They run a exceptional program. Even the afternoon programs are very good.

We give this school a try for 3 weeks and decided to withdraw at the end. The administration system is not organized. Some of the staff are friendly but others are not helpful. Some didn't seem welcoming to the parents. I have been to one school activitiy and is not well organized. The pick up system of the little kds (3 or 4 year-old) is chaotic. The environment is old and not clean. Despite it is a public school with little funding, they should show some effort of making it a fun and cheerful learning environment for the kids.

I love JHMS! The staff is very caring, and encouraging. The office staff is very friendly. The work that is given to students is challenging and encourages them to grow. In addition to academic skills, children learn to work together in groups and to teach each other, and to help each other. I have never had a negative experience with this school community. This is truly a school community that works together in the best interest of children.

InvoInvolved parents and dedicated teachers. Administrators are friendly and proactive. My child was in private Montessori school and this Montessori curriculum is pretty comparable. There are a few things I would change but overall I am happy with the school and my younger child will be attending next year.

John Hanson promotes a strong environment of learning. I am pleased with the education my daughter has received thus far.

Posted: January 31, 2015

No complaints here. I'm satisfied with the administration and staff. Community involvement is definitely a must for schools to be successful.

Posted: March 13, 2013

Kudos to the new administration. I find that with every organization you have adjustments. I find that collectively JHMS has worked for my kids and I really appreciate all experience. Most teachrs have been excellent. In particular Ms. DeLeon has really given my son the desire to want to learn. What more can you ask for?

Both of my daughters attend John Hanson. I love the Montessori method of learning. But as some parents stated, a few teachers are not up to par on passing on Dr. Montessori's ways. I think we've experienced having one of the best teachers at the school, Mrs. Lee-Sang, she's awesome! Unfortunately we've also experienced one of the worst, Ms. Whalen (who transferred from French Immersion). I think when the French Immersion left the school, they left Ms. Whalen behind intentionally. She is just batty in every way imaginable. She really just needs to retire! Even though she wouldn't remember if she did :(

The Montessori method of teaching has been completely lost due to the poor administration and leadership of the school. Most of the teachers are sub-par or average at best and the principal that just left as well as the new principal (who was the former vice-principal) both are apathetic in their approach to motivating the staff and fighting for the needs of the school. Numerous parents have had to get tutors for their kids because the teaching is so poor. The restrooms are a nightmare; you almost need a hazmat suit to use them. Thank goodness their is a strong PTA in place that actually cares and is willing to try and improve the school. Think twice before putting your child in this school. The test scores may be decent, but a child's safety and being in a sanitary environment are important as well. Parents should have a peace of mind that their child is in a safe, healthy environment when at school. John Hanson Montessori is not it.

John Hanson Montessori has and continues to exceeds my expectations. My son is doing an outstanding job and is even learning how to read, as a 3 year old. His teachers (Ms. Tuano and Ms. Avery) are great and partner with me in educating my child.

I wrote an Rating of 5/5 APPLES on 06/11/2010 - informing readers of email that stated: " I am a TRUE BELIEVER of the program at this school; because they provide a warm, loving environment where your child can feel comfortable and safe. They encourage children to discover new knowledge, to create and work out relationships with others; therefore, openly allowing their students (with guidance) to express and acquire new skills and interests with one another !!!
