As a member of the HoChunk Tribe from Nebraska who is helping research education for our new museum, I read with interest a review about the treatment of a school visitor.

The visitor wrote the recent review, chronicled the treatment received from school personnel, and offered remedies. I was impressed by the fact that although the visitor did not get a professional greeting which one should expect, suggestions were still made as a way to improve future
interactions between staff and visitors.

So, thank you visitor for taking the time to share your experience and thank you Cherokee Elementary School for sharing the review. It is an educational tool for learning how to improve communication between people.

I went to Cherokee Lane today to pick up my grandchild because his bus was inordinately late. Upon entering the office, I identified myself, said who I there to pick up, and provided my drivers license. I did not share any form of pleasantries with the staff, nor am I required to do so. I simply provided the required information.

During that time, one of the principals continually directed comments towards me implying that I should extend some sort of courteous acknowledgment. Because of that, I did not acquiesce. Let me be clear. I am neither a child nor do I answer to anyone at Cherokee Lane Elementary School. I would think the principal’s time would be better spent doing what she was hired to do (i.e., manage the school and ensure a safe and enriching learning environment for the children).

Let me be clear. It is not for anyone to try and make me offer pleasantries. I was rightfully annoyed about coming to the school to pick my grandchild up. As we all know too well, the service provided by the PGCPS bus system is inexcusable. It was said that I was irate. That is not true. I was rightfully annoyed. It would be nice if our educators understood the difference between the two words.

To make matters worse, a young woman on the staff took issue with something I said. Upon my grandchild being brought to the office, the administrator told the staff to check if I was on the emergency contact list. Clearly, the person I provided my information to had confirmed that I was and and I said as much. At that time the young woman was moving closer to me and speaking to me in a threatening and confrontational manner. It boggles the mind how she felt that behavior was appropriate. Clearly, it was not.

In fairness, I did direct an explicative towards the young woman. Again, I felt threatened due to her confrontational manner. Never mind the fact that the staff member approached me first by yelling, which she apparently thought was acceptable. I simply said that the person at the desk had cleared the pertinent information.

It is my hope that the powers that be at Cherokee Lane will reassess how their employees address individuals when they have to unexpectedly come to the school. Perhaps some interpersonal skills training is warranted. In addition, it may be beneficial if the employees are made to understand that their sense of entitlement is sorely misplaced.

This was an unfortunate incident. Hopefully all involved can view this as a learning opportunity.

My daughter attends this school & it is one of the best PG school I have come across. Great teachers that care for & work hard with students.

My experience and my child's experience has been wonderful thus far.

My son is reading at a level 30 in 1st grade. That is way above level. The teachers communicate well with parents to ensure they understand how to assist children with their homework. Regular test the children and group them accordingly to their level in order to help them one on one.

The teachers take pride in their work and ensure students grasp the necessary knowledge and understanding before moving forward. The only downfall is that teachers need to be more active within the schools PTO.

Kids would be kids regardless to how much you try to teach them the right thing. The school staff work together to ensure children follow guidelines and encourage making wise decisions daily.

The current principal is doing a great job structuring the kids while maintaining a safe environment for everyone. The current vice principal Mrs Gilbert does an awesome job.

Yes definitely. Certain parts of the day Kids are grouped accordingly to take on task. This ensures everyone is learning at their own pace while the teachers work closely with them.

The school is one of the best in the area. It s concerning; however, that a new principal will be joining the staff this coming fall. My hope is that he/she will upkeep standards while implementing new programs that will motivate staff and students to even higher achievements. It s time for the school s rating to move up. PTO, let s rally behind this!
