Gwynn Park Middle School

My experience as volunteer parent and my son attending this school. During the covid pandemic. My son missed his first year and half. All of 6 grade year. We were home school which i loved because, I was at home with him. 7th and 8th grade year were challenging not his academic but his social skills. I was worried but my son adjusted very well in Middle school. As a volunteer parent in 7th grade and 8th grade. I knew my son friends and school staff. My son enjoyed his two years at Gwynn Park Middle School. This school has so much potential if they were given the opportunity for more support equipment and staff. I believe there is lack of staff all over the PG county school. I pray the next generation of young adults will want to teach at Gwynn Park Middle School. Or change it to a "Gwynn Park Charter School". I believe the charter school are up and coming...they bring a different education and more support staff and better incentive package.

I was joking with the last review but this is not a joke on my way to the lunch room there were students that were getting pushed and shoved even the special ed kid. When I and my friends sat down I'm not joking with this quite literary we had to raise our hands to get picked into the lunch line mind that everyone in the lunch room was starving. We only have 30 minutes of lunch which is usually taken up by the line and by the time our table is called everything is cold and everything is gone and we have an ax of 10 minutes to eat. when we told the guy we had less than 15 minutes left of lunch and If we could line up he sent us back and didn't let us go in 10 minutes after. I will also like to point out this isn't the first time this has happened as it did last year and also he let students go without raising their hands.

Due to COVID-19. I believe PG County schools should continue the Hybrid Model School 2022. Because this will cut down on all the negativity schools have and kids have no choice but to focus on school work. Especially, middle school and high school. My son did well this school year. Let them continue the Hybrid learning model.

This has been the WORST school year ever! My daughter is in the sixth grade and I'm sorry I kept her enrolled as long as I did. It started with receiving homework once a month to once every two/three months and now after completing a simple assignment in class, they are allowed "free time" which means being on their phone/music device for the remainder of each class. Unfortunately, she's been introduced to homosexuality, yes these sixth grade girls are supposedly "BIsexuality", they skip class, curse at each other AND the staff, write all over their skin, fight, listen to inappropriate music and display an "emo" lifestyle. I was told by someone in the office "What do I expect, this is middle school"! Unacceptable to say the least and I will do everything in my power for my child NOT to return!!

This is my daughter's first year (6th grade) in this school and I hate it! The lack of communication from teachers is so frustrating and unprofessional, to say the least. The students are not allowed to bring their books home, which I believe is counter-productive in their learning process. Her math teacher assigns homework to be completed from their 'digital or online text book', but that textbook doesn't match the assignment she gives out! And, she had the audacity to ask the students to take a picture of the page she assigned for home from their workbook in the classroom because the online textbook is incorrect! I don't understand why they couldn't just bring the book home or the teacher make copies of the page and pass out the sheets to the student! I am so fed up and disappointed in this public school! I will have to make some sacrifices next school year! Some of the students are unruly and disrespectful in the classrooms and some teachers don't have any control of their classrooms, which means it's disruptive for the students who want to learn. I'm a proponent of communication and structure and I just don't see too much of that at this school.

There are both good and substandard teachers at Gwynn Park. I have children that attend this school and I feel they are at a huge disadvantage overall due to a number of variables such as large class sizes, inexperienced teachers, etc. Students also play a factor because you have kids with behavior issues that disrupt others from learning. However, my children have had some excellent teachers as well that go above and beyond to help the students which is an asset. While I understand that the relationship between teachers and parents is one of a partnership, it is a full-time job to stay on top of some teachers that simply want to use SchoolMax as your insight into the classroom and the only form of communication (which is really not communication). Hopefully they will continue to get more good teachers and start to get more support from the county.
