Over the last 6 years I have enjoyed observing the commitment HES has to its students. Overall, I am really pleased with the school and find its excellence to be a well kept secret. So why is the school rating a 2/10? I understand the test schools and other factors may provide a reason for the low score but it does not reflect the positive aspects of HES, its school spirit, of the quality of the teacher /student/administration involvement.

I only know about second grade. This might be related to common core curriculum which I do not like.

Involved parents, great staff. Plans to address aging building. The principal and staff look for innovative ways to serve the students. Parent volunteers are utilized. Parent input welcome.

HES is slowly being discovered for the gem it is - my child has been here for 4 years and counting. Walkable school, outstanding principle and teachers, an engaged community, diversity in any way you want to define it. The facility is lacking (due to long-standing County neglect) but parental involvement is high which has pushed this to the forefront. Truly an amazing place for a child to learn - and to learn what real community looks like.

My son is now in 3rd grade at HES - he started in kindergarten. He has had great teachers every year and is thriving. Principal Julia Burton is a fabulous leader - kind and responsive - and great at bringing in stellar teachers. Our test scores aren't great, largely because we are a true neighborhood public school (not a magnet program with closed enrollment) in a neighborhood with many lovely non-English speaking families. Our diverse community creates some achievement challenges but I question whether test scores are the best way to evaluate the quality of learning in a school.

I want to thank the principal for trusting the teachers in their ability to educate the children. The teachers are free to teach in a fun and age appropriate way as long as we follow the curriculum and progress and growth is being made. She does not check up on us unless their is a concern but her presence and expectations are clear. I drive 80 min each way to school everyday because teachers are respected and appreciated. It's a wonderful place to work.

This is our first year at Hyattsville Elementary and I am amazed at the wonderful the teachers, staff, and administration. There are tons of events, field trips, science, reading and art projects. The children are happy and engaged in learning.
We have even had our child's teacher go one step further to provide advanced homework and really push students to think further. I'm so impressed!

My children have attended Hyattsville Elementary for over one year. I have a kindergartner and second grader. We have been happy with Hyattsville Elementary for many reasons. The principal, Ms Burton, is amazing. She has made a huge difference at this school. The PTA is active and is welcoming to everyone. There are tons of extracurricular events going on every week. There are great clubs, a great music and arts program, and some truly talented teachers at this school. Please don't let a 2 rating fool you. Hyattsville has some outstanding things happening and I recommend visiting the school to see for yourself if you are looking to move into the neighborhood.

Hyattsville Elementary is awesome in engaging the community, and PTA in student wellfare. The staff is always friendly and attentive.
