Hyattsville middle school is not professional. The IEP OFFICE HAS YET TO MEET WITH ME SINCE MY DAUGHTER STARTED THIS SCHOOL, I'VE REACHED OUT TO THE SCHOOL TO SEE WHAT CAN BE DONE FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR NOTHING THE COUSOLER HA IS A BIG JOKE I REACH OUT TO THEM WHEN MY CHILD NEEDED SOME HELP IVE NEVER GOTTEN ANY HELP I WENT TO THE SCHOOL I CALLED NOTHING AND I NEEDED HELP AND NO ONE REACH OUT TO ME BUT THEY NEED TO DO BETTER CAUSE IM READY TO TAKE MY CHILD OUT MY CHILD OTHER SCHOOL HELP SHOW INTREST CONCERN ETC NOT HYATTSVILLE MIDDLE THEY ARE THE WORST.

PGCPS seem to have more bad than good these days and its unfortunate.
My experience at Hyattsville Middle hasn't been pleasant our 1st year here. Teachers who are unresponsive or extremely combative when questioned. Administration are dismissive when parents bring up concerns.
After months of emails, and showing up at the school, I still feel like I have a long battle ahead of us.

Honestly the teachers are cool and stuff and the kids are fine but like WHY CANVAS??? but like fr though canvas sucks and is so mid. google classroom is so much better, plus thir reasoning for using canvas is just....no like what kinda excuse is "WeLl SoME ColLaGES usE CanVAs sO We WaNnA PrEpARe OuR StuDeNts fOR iT" DUDE WE ARE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL????? plus I dont even plan to go to collage so like??? also pg county sucks overall if ur planning to move to pg... My experience in this school is great im an average student and I am enjoying my time because during the quarters I started to lack off and when I started to do better my teachers gave me prices and made us feel good about ourselfs. Also many fights happen but the counselors alsways he I myself got into one fight and then me and the person I fought became friends because the counselors cleared up our misunderstandings. This school is great to build character because it helps you realize that there is a world out there and they get us ready for that world. My teacher are really good whenever we have questions they always answer them. Also the students the do well they are rewarded and that makes us want to be better.

In our experience, Ms. Fichter, Ms. Williams and Mr. Burrows have been very effective because they have high standards for themselves and for their students and know how to support students who need extra help. In math, the student can be challenged if they or their parents ask, but it seems teachers are still trying to wrap their heads around how to help students meet common core standards. We have been very disappointed with science this year, especially due to the science fair - no students were put forward by the teacher, and the administration did nothing to support their teacher or students.

The school has exceeded my expectations. There are dedicated teachers in the honors classes and Creative and Performing Arts program who push our children to think critically and to excel in academics and arts. The transition from elementary school is tough because the school does not send regular newsletters to parents and the onus is on the students to communicate with their parents. Parents can and should reach out to teachers to offer support

I believe that HMS is a great school, but right now it is going through a transition. I am reading the comment below and I am quite concerned as it is not an inaccurate portrayal of our school. We have many strong teachers. Our students are permitted to go outside with the teacher when appropriate. There is definitely so much room for growth, but I will argue that this is one of the best middle schools in the county.
FACT: 90% of the Algebra students scored 4/5 on the PARCC test, which is ABOVE the county average The other 10% earned a 3 which is PROFICIENT. The EVIDENCE proves that our math teacher is exceptional and our school is far from horrible.
What's more important, an A or actual learning, growth and improvement?
If you want an easy A this is not the place for you. Students have to EARN their grades here. If you actually want your students to LEARN Algebra, the statistics show we have the BEST teacher in the county and her students perform ABOVE the county average

My daughter is in the 8th grade at this school. It has been a nightmare. The algebra teacher is terrible. She does not follow a text book or appear to follow a logical teaching sequence. Her grading is arbitrary and no students are getting an A in her class. As a result, she is jeopardizing the chances of for her students to get into the only decent high school program in the county (at Eleanor Roosevelt) which is based on grades. The principal and head of the math department did nothing to address this problem despite multiple parent complaining. In addition to bad teachers, weak academics and an unresponsive bureaucracy, the social environment is hostile. There are fights every week at the school. Boys and girls have to sit separately at lunch. The children are never permitted to go outside. This is a horrible school. If you have the money, send your kids to a private school or move!

I'm a 7th grade student attends Hyattsville Middle school and I wish I didn't have to go there's so much bullying name calling and I feel so out of place there I wish my mom or dad could transfer me to a new school I hate this school the teachers are mean the guidance counselors aren't nice and I'm always made fun when I go to tell nothing happens to the other kids it just get worst I wish I could just go to a different school

Most of the Teachers a wonderful, the Principal is doing a good job in my opinion. They need to tighten up and affirm the school policy. Too much bullying, especially from the out of boundry students. I think more screening is necessary in that area. The CPA prograom is not well advertised and taken seriously. Better communicaiton is needed between the teachers/parents. Information is given at the last minute.
