I am writing this on behalf of my granddaughter who is in the 7th grade at MLK Middle School in Laurel. She came over after school today saying that only two of her regular teachers were at school today. There were fights in a classroom and in the gym between students with little or no supervision. some students were hurt.

Two of her teachers are out for two weeks. One substitute called in six, no replacement available and one teacher arrived 30 min late. There are often fights in the gym and on busses. I discovered that my granddaughter is now being taught algebra but does not know her multiplication tables due to Covid and poor teaching. As I a retired teacher with almost 30yrs experience I am sad, angry, and appalled at what has happened at this school!!

This school needs a complete makeover, renovation, demolition. It’s very dirty from not being cleaned on a regular basis. There are water fountains that cannot be used due to them not being lead checked.
Some teachers communicate well and show they are passionate about their subject, and want students to succeed. It’s a crying shame that the name of MLK Jr is attached to this building that appears to be a relic from the dinosaur age. What in the world can we expect from staff and kids in such a poorly designed building and poor environment. It looks like a place to incarcerate criminals. I’ve actually seen better facilities for criminals than this school. Is it even in one of the building lists for renovation? Parents need to rise up a protest to protect their children. My child comes home telling of bullying, fights, edibles, BB gun and multiple other infractions that when reported the reply is a nonchalant reaction. Calling counselors is a waste of time as my child says “ they don’t care” it is true. The new superintendent needs to invite the children of DrKing to come see what his name is representing in Maryland. Fix this school please !!

My experience with this middle school was the worst, we are latin family, as a mother, there is a lot stress kids are constantly fighting, I was in the school to add money for lunch for my daughter and I verify myself, fighting, my daughter constantly was saying about altercations in class, I do not recommended this place for any student specially if you are NOT african-american people, is very rude, place. An students are not given their best effort, students they don't care. Please think twice before to register your kid in MLKJ.

They over-stress students. Expect them to do a whole lot of work in such little time

Posted: March 20, 2020

There are very little chill teachers. But the rest have breakdowns for no reason, complain about how they have to much work to grade, disrespectful to all students, doesn’t help students at all. It’s just an awful school

Posted: March 20, 2020

If the teachers don’t respect students, what makes them think that the student will need to respect them or their peers?

They could care less. They just tell you to ignore. Or they just don’t help you at all.

This school is awful. The teachers are terrible. The principal doesn’t do anything but complain and yell at the students for no good reason. She acts all good when parents are around but than when they leave she is so disrespectful and lets not say that she was going to suspend students because a picture of her had leaked of her smoking. As a parent I wouldn’t want my daughter/son to look up to someone who smokes. And the teachers don’t try to listen to students. And once when I went to use their restroom the door was broken and there was no soap or anything. It’s a broken school. It’s just awful. Don’t bring your child here

This was handled but not what I expected but handled.

I have found that the English teacher that my child currently has thinks he is teaching college students and not 7th graders. I have spoken to a few honor roll 8th graders who all say this particular teacher grades extremely hard and isn't very nice to deal with daily. I recently had to block his emails as he sends 3 to 4 a day.

Some lack compassion, care and concern but when the principal lacks it I can understand why the teachers lack as well.

Posted: April 1, 2019

It is hard for a child to learn this at a school where they are few teachers who have real compassion for what they are doing and the leader ( principal) doesn't seem to interested either.

The principal seems to make excuses for her staff instead of approaching the problem head on and looking for solutions. She tends to defend her staff instead of taking the feedback and learning from it. I would say it is hard communicating with a principal who already feels she is right and her staff is innocent at all times.

No, I have found that if your child has a disability that this is not the school they should attend as this school lacks understanding, passion for children and patience.

Posted: April 1, 2019

My experience with this school has been subpar if not horrible. I find that the teachers are harsh, uncaring and have little to no patience. I have yet to deal with anyone at this school other than Ms. Goodridge who seems to have a real true interest in children and them succeeding and doing well.
