I extremely dislike this school. It has been nothing but a nuisance to me and my child. The students act like they are walking to a funeral every day and the only ones that act excited, are the special education kids. The special education is one of the few things that stops this school from being shut down. The Special Education class in on average smarter than the regular one. The teachers are very bad and barely do anything except tell the children to read a book and watch a video. They have been notorious for calling students rude things. It is not very safe because there are people throwing stuff everywhere. Bathrooms, Hallways , and Cafeteria. They support kids mental health, but that is because students have protested various times. It locks many families out of the community and refuses to allow them to participate.

This is the worst middle school possible send your child somewhere else. If your child is in any way different, even slightly the school, and the parents will totally just ban you from the community and teach their children the same. The teachers are horrible. They speak to the students so ignorantly. The parents are even worse. If you don’t come from a high dollar purse, don’t even bother talking to half the people here. Sports are out of control there’s no sportsman like conduct. We were threatened several times last year to have sports taken from us. It got so bad. Do yourself a favor. Actively take the time to find a better school and a better community to grow your family in. Otherwise you’re going to come out, defeated, and worse than when you started. Take that from someone that lived nearby and grew up in this area for over 20 years. It’s a shame this used to be a semi decent place.

I honestly do not like this school, people bully and when I report it and when I get bullied I report it and nothing happens at all. Do not send your child to our school bc you may think it is good but it isn’t. I have been here for 3 years now and some teachers are very nice and chill but some others are very rude and very mean to us. When I report a incident when something happens, the principle and all the staff see it but do nothing about it. What makes me mad is that they yell at kids for the smallest thing like leaving a small piece of trash on the floor or bus but they don’t yell at ppl when other people bully and are racist to other people. The bullying rules are in the Handbook and I read through the hand book and you can get suspended for bulling someone a lot but no one has gotten suspended for bullying at our school.

I had an amazing time attending Severna Park Middle School! The school offers a fantastic learning environment and numerous opportunities for personal growth and development. Here are some highlights of my experience:

My son loves his school and he has really thrived in sixth grade. He describes his teachers as nice, strict and smart. He is constantly challenged in every class. He monitors his grade and there’s opportunities to get extra help several times a week. There’s a lot of interesting electives that he loves - Dance for Athletes (amazing workout), FACS (cooking, sewing, etc) and health (age appropriate lessons about health including mental health) and art (plenty of time to talk to friends while creating art). We love this school and feel so lucky our kids go there.

Kinda bad, in my opinion. I am a student at SPMS, and there are many bad things about the school. The "no tolerence policy" makes no sense, along with the fact that if one small group of students disobey the rules and guidelines, the whole entire class or grade usually gets punished. There's really no enforcement and order on the bus, either. The worst part for me, a person who usually sleeps until 11 AM, is how I have to get up at 6:45-7:00 AM to get ready for school and not miss the bus. Not the entire school experience is bad, there are some great things about SPMS like the "Passport to the world" class, after school activities, and some teachers are really chill and all around reasonable people. Even with those pros, though, I haven't been enjoying the general SPMS school experience during the two years I have attended the school. Two stars.

I guess one could say that, but my bus experience doesn't exactly reflect that statement (i.e. bringing school milk chocolate cheese in and releasing it upon the walkway, putting pepperoni on the AC so the bus smells like pepperoni, ect).

If the principal counts as "school leadership" it's not the best. The prinicpal last year said the seventh graders would be allowed on their phones before school, but we're still not. Also, the lunch admin takes away free seating if a fraction of the grade population is talking too much at lunch. And it doesn't help that I don't have that many friends in my classes.

I'm a big fan of many of the teachers at this school. My kids have had a wonderful experience. The chorus teacher is really wonderful. I wish there were more stem electives - particularly computer programming, but the math and science foundation my kids got was excellent. As an engineer, that's important to me.

The complaint about "lazy teachers" minimizing workload and maximizing salary is beyond belief. The math teachers are available during lunch, after school, and hold special classes until 4 o'clock on Thursdays to make sure all kids are mastering -not just passing- their learning goals. It hurts me to think someone would sling mud at them. The school has one of the highest functional-test math scores in the state. You don't get that from "lazy teachers." The band teacher is spread beyond thin with responsibilities in areas outside of music and is quite knowledgeable. Go onto YouTube and check out the orchestra and the festival and jazz bands (he conducts them ALL) and you'll be impressed.

Too many lazy math teachers here to give it a good review - scantron sheets for geometry, really?. Most parents seem to get tutors for math so their children can learn, instead of relying on the teachers who don't understand math to just repeat what they see on their answer sheet. The language teachers have been great, as my child learned more in 2 years than I did in 4 years at high school. My child had some great and some OK English and science teachers. The band instructor is horrible and its frustrating to listen to him tell us how great he is. Some of the extra classes they have that teach cooking, sewing, finance, etc are well done. It's such a huge school that most teachers focus on trying to minimize workload and maximize salary while not concerning themselves with educating the children.
