The principal who's name is Jewel Preston lost her mind talking to me like I'm a kid and I'm older than her. I came to get my kid at 1:30 which is 15 minutes before they get out and she had the nerve to tell me I can't get him until school is over. In the past I picked him up 3 times at that same time. I was talking to another staff member about am I able to get my son if it's an emergency by then it was only 2 minutes of school left then Preston the principal jumped in my conversation and raised her voice telling me I don't have any emergency and she's right I because I never said I did I was just asking a question. She started raising her voice and being rude when I kindly told her I was not talking to her. She told me to get my son when school is out and slammed the front door in my face. Now if she talks to a parent like that, imagine how she treats the kids. You can't let stuff like that go which I'm not. Don't even bother talking to the superintendent because most likely they're buddies. You have to go over him or her to get results.

When it comes to harassment and bullying, this school and Ms. Briscoe (now former Principal) do nothing about the situation but make the victims feel even worse about themselves. I’m hoping that the situations are taken care of and dealt with properly, since the school has a new Principal this school year.

I wouldn't recommend this school to anyone. No communication and If i could send my child elsewhere, I would.

Posted: January 4, 2018

There is no communication with parents about assignments due; I literally have no clue day to day when homework my child has to even be able to question him about it.

Posted: January 4, 2018

I have encountered numerous students who have indicated the teachers don't care because the teachers/staff are ACTUALLY SAYING IT TO THE STUDENTS.

Posted: January 4, 2018

Bullying that isn't taken care of; the teachers/staff are so focused on what the children are doing wrong and making them call their parents for every little thing they don't have time to assist in building character.

Leadership? I didn't know there was any leadership at this school.

Posted: January 4, 2018

I've had no experience with school for this section.

Posted: January 4, 2018

I am close with plenty of students who have mentioned there are a select few who are constantly bullying.

Awful school. Principal has no idea what is going on. Fights rampant. If I could I'd send my child anywhere else.

Oaklands has a dedicated staff committed to educating our students. Teachers and administration work together to meet the needs of all students. On many occasions staff members have gone the extra mile to contact parents and make sure students are productive and successful. The staff is caring and resourceful. It has been a pleasure working such a cooperative and caring staff.

Funding does not come from parents. That post below is not true. The childrens are mean and the class sizes are so enormous it makes me cry

Posted: September 4, 2014

The problems at Oaklands are based on funding which comes, essentially from parental involvement. Many of the parents in the community are foreign and do not speak the language, and therefore, do not participate. The staff and faculty are doing their best, the students are good.

I would never send a child here to the Oaklands. class sizes are huge and fighting happens all the time. The student comes home very upset and learning is not prioritty. The school looks like it hasn't changed since my childhood in the 50s because it hasn't. sad place to send a child

Great school, but lack supplies, building and more materials. Good pupils. This school really need a new building , Needs iPads, desk top and general supplies for the teachers

My daughter attends this school. One day she had an appointment. My husband and i took her to school and walked her to her class at about minutes after 8:00 a.m. While walking from the class we saw the principal in the hall shouting "hey, hey, you" and pointing in our direction, we did not pay her any mind because I could not believe that she was addressing us in that manner. I asked if she was talking to us and she said yes we are not allowed to enter the building at that time. The guidance counselor was with her(we passes this lady in a room, and she said good morning to us, but was not professional enough to say to us that based on school procedures we were not allowed to go down the hallway at that time. Just to give you an idea how this administration team is so unprofessional. I still cannot believe that the principal was addressing us in that manner. It happens in the morning and i am still thinking about it. I am thinking about writing a letter to the county, because I/we do not pay taxes to these kind of unprofessional individuals working with our kids. i am so not impressed with the school. The PTA is not doing anything for the school. Students are not recognized apron.

I have two children in Oaklands and Ms. Briscoe (Principal ) is one of the reasons why my kids are still there. She is very hands on, interactive and shows a lot of care and concern for her children, parents and staff. Unfortunately, Oaklands is one of many schools in PG County sharing the same problem and a lot of the problem is caused from politicians and policy makers that have no clue of the needs of these children.

I have 2 children that have attended Oaklands for 3 years and every year it gets worse. The principal lacks the skill to lead the school and is more concerned with the state test scores than anything else. My son scores advanced on all state tests. She is super supportive up until the time the tests are complete and then dismisses the kids once she has the scores that she wants. I am moving just to get my kids away from this school. If you are thinking about moving to an area where your kids have to attend Oaklands I would advise you to think twice. My sons teacher flat out told him that she didn't like him and didn't care if he ever learned anything again in his life he is 11. The worst part about it is that the principal did nothing about it. My son was suspended for talking back to the very teacher that said these things to him. I had to get the school board involved after the assistant principal physically pushed my child into a wall.
