I have had my two children at Rockledge for a little over 3 years. We have had some great experiences and our kids love to go to school every day. Each time I visit Rockledge I can see improvement. I believe this is because of the new principal (Mr. Prince) and his staff’s willingness to adapt to his new leadership style. I have no doubt that we will see improvement in the test scores this year.

Also, each time I meet with a teacher I leave feeling that my kids are getting a great education. They are very understanding/accommodating to each individual student’s situation. I have personally witnessed teachers making time for students who are having difficulty. I have seen them bring in extra helps so no child is left behind while challenging those student who are not experiencing the same type of difficulty. I have seen them sharing the concerns and providing solutions for bilingual families. Diversity is a strong element to Rockledge and the staff continue to make it a strength.

The community should continue to rally around Rockledge and I would love to see more parent involvement. My husband and I both work full time but we try out best to carve out a little time here and there to do our part.

I recommend Rockledge!!!

The teachers could be very effective if PGCPS would address the discipline problem. Most teachers are passionate about their duties.

Often too much homework was assigned to catch up because the classroom was so unruly. One or two students with behavioral problems consume an inordinate amount of teacher and classroom time, and the principal and school system ignore the problem. The result is putting the burden on students and teachers to make up for PGCPS unwillingness to discipline defiant children.

“Pros” and “cons” about Rockledge:
First, the “pros.” Rockledge used to be a great school, so it’s nice to know that it’s attainable. Diversity has always been a strength and attribute; and there have always been good parents around who would step forward and get engaged, not necessarily through the institutional PTA, but as drop-in volunteers or irregular visitors. The great, dedicated teachers are the bedrock of the school but they are undermined from above.
Rockledge has iron-fisted management, but no leadership. The management puts on a pleasant face and seems eager to please and agreeable, but goes to absurd lengths to prevent parents from getting too involved in the school. They’re happy to take your monetary contributions, but they really prefer that parents stay out during school hours unless specifically called upon, and not question school operations. It used to be the other way around… Many parents who have invested much time and money in the school have thrown up their hands and put their kids in private schools. Those who can’t afford such luxury are stuck with a disdainful school system, an apathetic school board, and an ambitious front office where ambition and PGCPS insider politics guides every decision.
To PG County, it seems that Rockledge is firstly a jobs program, then secondly a county institution that happens to warehouse and educate children. A throng of non-teaching staff has ebbed and flowed through Rockledge in recent years, some with contrived, meaningless job titles. Several times the past few years, the school has hired teachers who quickly exited for extended leave, only to be replaced for months by unqualified—and sometimes unwilling, non-teaching staff or a parade of uninterested substitutes. If missing a day of school matters, then how about missing 3 months of 4th grade math because the school won’t bring in a real teacher? If PGCPS is too financially strapped to do that, then why do they will hire a horde of aides and assistants to do odd jobs around the school? Teaching the kids should become first priority again.

The homework is of no value. It doesn't excite children - it's the same old boring, unchallenging work that does not push for any creativity or thought.

Sadly, this school is an embarassment to the Bowie community. It starts with the incredibly poor leadership! The principal has no respect for her teachers or parents and does not even appear to like children. So many good teachers have left over the years and the school ratings continue to decline. It's run like a prison and the fights on the playground are a regular thing. Teachers yell because they are so frustrated, children are mean because they are in a bad environment - it's a vicious cycle. Stay away from this school.

Teachers fine. Principal and assistant, terrible. Ive had numerous problems. Other moms too. I hope there is a change!

This school is great! My little one loves his teacher. The school administration and the teachers provide a warming and welcoming environment to teach the children. The facilities are always clean and the overall school facilities are in great shape. The PTA is very organized and the community participates activelly!! We plan to spend the next four years in the school.

Ms. Seidel who is the principal does not work with parents. I have had an issue for the last couple of years and I did not get a resolution. I had to get the school board involved to get action taken. When you talk to her she seems like she cares, but when you try to follow up she puts up a bunch of barriers that don't make things happen. Also combing grade levels isn't working at the school.

Rockledge used to be a good school. A couple of years ago I could have given it a 4. There were some changes that were made without putting kids first. The principal comes off as really nice but doesn't address parents concerns. I'm really disappointed in the direction this school is going.

The 2013-2014 has been rough on my child. The principle is horrible, there are no other words to describe her. She comes off as very nice and caring but when an issue needs to be addressed she completely changes her tone. She talks down to parents and is not receptive at all. I am not the only parent that has had the same issue with her. Some of the teachers are ok but others not so much, My child's 3rd teacher leaves a lot to be desired. My child is extremely bright but the way they have set up his classroom with both 3rd and 2nd graders is not working. A lot of children are struggling, not just mine! I have so many complaints about this school. I would not recommend it to any parent at all. IF you are considering enrolling your child into this school, I would suggest to explore other options. My child will NOT attend this school after this year, even if I have to homeschool.

The 2011-2012 school year at Rockledge Elementary was challenging. The new Principal is a better fit for High School. The new Principal does not have a great connections with parents and make decisions without considering the impact on the school community. The tone "loud" of the Principal is also not conducive to an elementary school environment. The multiple changes in staff over the last year has been terrible. Rockledge was previously a great school with a warm environment and deserving of 4 stars despite being overly crowded. I am not sure the school can get back to the strong sense of children first, team and strong community with the new Principal.
