The administration is only concerned with their power and image. They do not care about whether students are able and willing to learn. Their focus is on their ratings. When students misbehave, the teachers are caught in the middle of parents and administration blaming the teachers. The administration does not hold the students accountable.

THIS SCHOOL WAS TRASH WHEN I WENT 20 YRS AGO AND NOW ON TOP OF BEING EVEN WORSE, THEY ARE HAVING A BIG TRANSPORTATION ISSUE SINCE AT LEAST 5 YEARS AGO THAT I KNOW OF. IF YOU LIVE IN LAUREL MAKE SURE YOU CAN DRIVE YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL BECAUSE THEY DO NOT HAVE RELIABLE BUS TRANSPORTATION. THEY WILL MARK YOUR CHILD ABSENT WHEN THE BUS DOESNT EVEN SHOW UP. THEN THE HANDFUL OF TIMES THE BUS ACTUALLY DOES SHOW UP ON TIME (WHEN THERE IS A SUBSTITUTE BUS DRIVER WHO IS NOT AWARE OF THE BUS USUALLY BEING LATE) THEY EXPECT CHILDREN TO BE ON TIME AFTER MONTHS OF THE BUS BEING 30+ MINS LATE. WHEN YOU CALL THE SCHOOL WHO ALREADY DOESNT WANT TO HEAR IT, THEY WILL GIVE YOU THE NUMBER TO THE TRANSPORTATION DEPT WHO CARES EVEN LESS AND WILL MINIMIZE THE ISSUE AND DENY THAT THEY ARE HAVING PROBLEMS. AND ACT AS IF YOUR CHILD WAITING OUTSIDE FOR 45+ MINS FOR A BUS THAT DEPENDING ON THE DAY IS NEVER COMING OR ALREADY CAME UNUSUALLY ON TIME IS NO BIG DEAL. MY CHILD IS THE ONLY ONE AT HER BUS STOP AND IM NOT LETTING HER WAIT OUTSIDE TO BE KIDNAPPED BECAUSE AACPS AND THEIR TRANSPORTATION CANT GET IT TOGETHER OR EVEN ADMIT THEY ARE HAVING PROBLEMS. AACPS DOES NOT CARE ABOUT CHILDRENS SAFETY AND IM SO SORRY TO MY CHILD THAT I GAVE THIS SCHOOL A CHANCE KNOWING WHAT I ALREADY KNEW. UNFORTUNATELY MEADE MS & HS ARE ALREADY PLAGUED WITH STUDENTS LACKING PROPER GUIDANCE AT HOME AND STAFF THAT HAVE BEEN THERE FOR YEARS JUST FOR A PAYCHECK. EVEN MY DAUGHTERS OLD MIDDLE SCHOOL IN PRINCE GEORGES COUNTY WASNT AS BAD. AT LEAST THEY NEVER HAD MY CHILD WAITING OUTSIDE IN THE COLD FOR ALMOST AN HOUR FOR A BUS THAT NEVER CAME. IF YOU CAN HELP IT PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU LIVE IN LAUREL AND RELY ON SCHOOL BUS TRANSPORTATION. SADLY, I DONT THINK ANYTHING WILL EVER CHANGE FOR THE BETTER AT MEADE MS.

My child educational experience at MMS has been phenomenal. The teachers has been attentive and supportive of her as she made the transisition from prviate school to public school. Her grades were fairly respresented by her academic performance. The lessons in her adv. class were challening and well-rounded. I believe this school doesnt a fair rating because of a few issues that are communication based. I have been able to reach out to teachers when I did have issues and get timely responses. Lessons start at home and the schools job is to educate not babysit. I think MMS has the right tone for education and we as parents must reinforce the level of expectations from our children, which starts at home.

The school is good with an undeserved reputation. All middle schools have issues. I have four children with my last in middle school now and have moved around the country for work. Having moved so much over the past decade I have experience with 5 different middle schools. Meade seems to have the most compassionate and realistic staff that I have dealt with. Most teachers go out of their way to help students and treat students as individuals, not as collective groups. This school is the only one I experienced that seems to truly care about the development of the whole student, not just academics. Administrators care about individual circumstances and seems to be honest. Character building seems to be central to Meade's mission. If there is one area Meade needs help with it is behavior management. There are no more fights than in the other middle schools my kids attended, but the way they speak to adults and their peers is often rude/crude. There are also an abnormal number of students in the hall on the occasions I have visited but this could be for legitimate reasons. One other area there could be improvement would be parent contact and opportunities to volunteer/participate. When I emailed about a low grade for my son the teacher told me I should check the internet. When I did that I found that many grades weren't updated frequently. I called and spoke with a counselor who told me he would speak with teachers and get back to me. He back called with a full report and offered to schedule a teacher meeting and agreed that the internet system isn't always the best when teachers are behind in grading. Meade is a great school with a few minor flaws that can easily be fixed but it is the best my family has experienced by far. We considered sending my son to private school when we read some of the reviews but we are glad we gave Meade Middle a chance.

It depends on the teacher. Most give 1 or 2 nights of homework each week. Some allow redos some don't. It would be great if there was consistency.

There are lessons for students several times a week.

We would rank leadership higher if we saw or heard from the principal more often. We called the principal once and our call was returned by a counselor.

There are a lot of good teachers at this school. If you have a student that takes school serious, there is opportunity to learn and excel.

There are good teachers with strong character and the administrative staff is awesome. Ms. Harrigan, Ms. Williams, Ms. Shuler, Ms. Sweich, Ms. Scott, etc.

My daughter attended Meade Middle 6th-8th grades. There are some very good and caring teachers here. Communication needs improving, many times I didn't know a function was happening until the day before. All middle schools have problems but if you watch the company you keep and stay with students who are focused and hard working, you will be fine.

Im in the 8th grade and my years in meade were okay kindof. There are alot of fights and kids being disruptive during class. Sometimes the teacher couldn't even teach a class period becuase of a student and we basically got the whole period to do what ever we wanted. Meade isn't the best school at all but because of the Baltimore-DC area where the kids are being bused into meade aren't really good places. At least on a "good week" we would have 0-1 fights but otherwise there is alot of drama and alot of fights. Plus no one really likes our new principal. I don't really have no problems with anyone in the school but that is just because i watch who i hang out with and i never let anything get to me. But i can say is that the teachers do really care and we have a few good subs but most of them are really mean, which i can't blame them. The students dont care at all what any teacher says especially if you are a sub. Don't let anyone fool you because the rumors you have heard yourself are probably true. Otherwise it is a GREAT school just the students are the ones that make it bad.

We have been very pleased with Meade. Teachers have been responsive and engaged. My children enjoy their classes. We would like to see more focus on advanced learners and more communication from the administration, but the quality of education has been very good.
