My wife and I cannot say enough good things about St. Louis school after 5 years with multiple children attending. The small community feel makes our experience feel personal like that of community schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and other North East schools. Why in the world Marylanders think county run schools can be better than community schools is beyond me. Maybe some families like the idea of redistricting, we certainly don't.

Reading the comments of many critics makes me think either there are bad actors responding or simply some families leaving St Louis families "drink the cultural cool aid". The fact that people here are suggesting putting kids in public schools as a better alternative means they weren't actually a good fit for St Louis.

In a state and county that calls up down and assigns pronouns to kindergarteners, if that is your thing public school is just for you. But when you want your kids to be held to a high standard that fosters respect, responsibility, and reverence then St. Louis is an amazing school and community for kids to learn and grow up.

St. Louis is such an amazing community. The majority of teachers and staff really care for students like family. This year the principal has gone above and beyond to ensure the school is a safe learning environment for the children. They are also implementing a lot of practices to shift back towards traditional Catholic values and put faith at the center of campus life. While this naturally causes pushback from the less faithful, they are not backing down, which is amazing. If you are serious about education, family, learning in a safe environment and your faith, St. Louis really is the best place. Only wish they would add a high school!

All three of my kids attended SLS for three years. The first year was decent but after the new administration came in, everything went downhill.

Academics are inconsistent, the culture is disappointing and rules and regulations feel arbitrarily enforced with little transparency or consistent standard.

In my experience, the principal has been a major part of the problem. She comes across as unqualified for the role and tends to enforce rules at her discretion rather than following a clear, consistent policy. There is no transparency around expectations or consequences and that lack of consistency creates a frustrating environment for both students and parents.

Academically, there are teachers who genuinely care and do a great job preparing kids for the next level. Unfortunately, there are also others who seem unqualified and in those cases it can feel like a full year of a childs development is wasted.

We were very happy that St. Louis school chose to accept students in person for the 2020/21 year, while the public schools and many private schools were virtual only. My son benefitted from being in school. Even so his grades and behavior were showing signs of "cabin fever" with all the extra distancing rules. Bizarrely, in May and June when Howard County showed the benefits of the vaccine program, and the public schools reopened (in accordance with CDC and State of MD advice) St. Louis did not make any changes to their regulations, not even following their own guidelines from the Archdiocese of Baltimore. I wrote to the principal, pointing out precise opportunities for changes within the guidelines, but she did not reply to my e-mails. I also talked to the grade teachers about homework issues, and they did respond with an action plan. However I cannot recommend St. Louis school until the current principal (Thomas) has moved on.

Both of our children have thrived at St. Louis! The faculty are wonderful and talented individuals that we fully appreciate. Our kids love going to school!

This school is not the best in the world, but basically our home. As a student at SLS, who has been here for over 8 years, this can be a love hate situation because of the many pros and cons. Most of the teachers are nice, but due to some unknown reason which the school never tells us about, most of them are gone. The school censors a lot of real world problems and doesnt let us discuss it during class. To get back on the subject of teachers, one of the most loving and caring teachers got fired from the school for a reason other administrators want to hide. The school doesnt really care about you, it cares about good ratings and almost cover ups. At this rate, me writing this review puts me in danger of getting in trouble. If I were to be honest, the school is diverse and very caring towards minorities. The school has taught me so much and made me love writing. Academically this school is great, but cares more about grades then learning. You can go to this school if you want your kid to be safe, but just note he/she may not like it that much.

Ps. They give a lot of homework and IXL but thats okay.

If you can separate the administration from the school, St. Louis would be a good school. Unfortunately, you cannot. They need to make a change. Recently, the administration asked a large group of mom's to take down their Facebook page dedicated to the school. It's bizarre. The principle tries to summons parents into her office.

Some might complain about the amount of homework. I don't have a problem with that. On occasions, the instructions are ambiguous. They do a decent job of reviewing homework. I'm neutral but closer to agree.

There are several teachers who are under-qualified and very new. I would be interested in knowing the teacher turnover rate--it is very high based on my experience. That said, there are also several excellent teachers. You have to fight to get them. It appears the administration is running them off, however.

The school does a good job at teaching religion and the faith instills integrity, compassion and respect. But the administration is so destructive that it infects the children. They do not believe the administrators and the administrators do not show the appropriate compassion and respect to teachers, which the children observe.

Leadership is dishonest and divisive. They foster an atmosphere of fear among the teachers and work more on covering up failures, which happens, rather than striving for improvement.

Certain teachers go out of their way to help students with disabilities. The best teacher was recently forced out and she was amazing at helping students.

The administration keeps incidents secret and it struggles to teach students how to deal with bullying or why one shouldn't bully. They rely heavily on a puppet for younger kids and implicit threats for older ones.

I won't be sending my child back next year. Seems they have their priorities out of wack. I prefer a more humble and traditional environment for my child and unfortunately that doesn't seem to be possible with any Catholic schools in Howard County, but I should have known better. Sad times for those who prefer a little more orthodoxy.

But in a very liberal way, and they are quite pompous about it. I think it's good for the kids, but as the parent, I find myself wanting to roll my eyes when I hear the administration speak, instead of feeling proud, as I would if I thought this school actually had traditional Catholic morals. I like that the kids go to mass frequently and participate, but yet it's also discomforting when I feel like my child is surrounded by a bunch of Pharisees.

I went to this school k-8, then also worked as an aid while finishing college. This school is not only an affective and loving environment for children to learn, but also for them to grow emotionally as people. I will definitely be starting the alumni legacy tradition in my immediate family when I send my first born (due in December 2018) here, starting in 5 years :)

We had a terrible experience here. We pulled our kid after only a few months and did not even mind that we already paid for the tuition. Why go here when you have better public schools around the area. The teacher that our kid had and the principal were not supportive and were judgmental to parents. Would not recommend this school at all. They are hypocrites.

My children have been going to this school for a few years. The administration and the teachers have gone above and beyond to help my children with learning and work with us when needed. They have resource teachers for students who have learning differences to help them catch up. They do not give too much homework but teaches the students effectively where the student is ready to be successful if they choose to move to a different school or high school.

The school guidance counselor works with the children, we also get a weekly email outlining the program and any topics they discussed. Very creative- they taught yoga and taking belly breaths to calm down when anxious or upset them practice coping skills for communicating feelings and emotions. Love it!!!

The children learn Catholic values and the teachers truly model the behavior they expect from
The children. The school ordered a buddy bench to promote inclusion for those children who may be shy or new to make friends and play with others when they aren't sure what to do - I love the school and can't say enough!

I have a kindergartner, she loves it, the teacher ask the parent to limit homework to 10-15 min for her age. I feel this is an appropriate amount of time to practice and build the skill for focusing on academics while allowing ample time for my daughter to play and be a 5 year old!

St. Louis is a wonderful environment. The school embodies what a Catholic school should be - a faith filled, loving place where students are taught outstanding academics. When I've compared the grade equivalent course work and homework to peers in other schools, St. Louis been more rigorous. I feel blessed to have my children attend a school where it is so evident that the teachers and administration care about them.

Unfortunately, I cannot express the same views as those given Saint Louis School a score of 4 or 5 out of 5. Do not waste your time and money with this school, your kid will be better at the local Public Schools. The Schools does not have resources to empower kids to succeed in overall. The School carries and portraits to have an arrogant attitude towards life and most but not all the teachers are perceived bitter and unhappy. As a result, children cannot find themselves with a positive attitude in learning. A word of advise, if you are planning to come to Saint Louis School, make sure your children are bright and be ready to contribute a lot of money to avoid any type of labeling from the Administration (it all start from the top).

After attending public, Montessori and private schools in Howard County, St. Louis has been the best, most rewarding, experience for our son (and us) since transferring into 3rd grade. The high teacher-student ratio, rigorous academics, foreign language instruction, nurturing teachers and staff, as well as the sports and dynamic after-school clubs have converted our son into child that WANTS to go to school every single morning. Can't imagine a stronger recommendation for a school. While we experienced the more expensive private schools in the past, the quality of St. Louis' academics, staff, campus and community is every bit as high, if not higher, than the high-priced competition.

For over six years now, our daughters have thrived at St. Louis School it s wonderful! Academics are thorough, challenging & I believe, above-grade in most cases. Every day the girls share something fun they ve learned, like a cool science experiment or a silly song to learn math facts. When she needed assistance with reading/comprehension, I appreciated the extra resources provided to my daughter. SLS does a beautiful job incorporating Catholic teachings/values into daily school life, from weekly Mass to religion classes to charity/service activities. I like that respect & acceptance of others is stressed/displayed. The administration & staff are professional, kind & generous with their time. All genuinely care about the students well-being. Our daughters enjoy being in Chorus, Band, CyberSTEM & Basketball just some of the extra-curricular activities offered. Parent involvement through volunteering is welcomed & highly encouraged. We have a great school community & opportunities to share in that through fundraisers & family events. Overall, we have peace-of-mind that our daughters are thriving in a safe, positive environment. We are happy & proud they attend SLS!

My grandchildren have attended St. Louis since 2004. One has graduated and three are still attending We are very happy at St. Louis. It not only has an outstanding academic program but the children learn respect and kindness to others. All the staff contribute to the overall well being of the children. It is truly a village.

i graduated st Louis last year and i am now a freshman in high-school. st Louis doesn't give students the chance to be able to express themselves. the curriculum even though it was challenging it was pretty good. there are very few teachers i can say that i really liked at st.louis. my teacher in science kinda of forced us into memorizing everything now that i am in high school i realize how terrible that was this year when we did chemistry i remembered doing that stuff at the end of the year last year and getting a 96 on my finale exam but i couldn't remember anything because i never really understood it i had just memorized the 10 pg study guide she gave us. i struggled alot in math and i felt my math teacher never made a real effort to try to help me she even it was her first year teaching algebra so she was inexperienced but she was very nice... i just personally did not like her teaching. The sister at the school is very nice and caring she runs after care and the people who work in after care are also great. but i HATED the administration they were all so fake and unreal many students did not like the administration.

I am relieved my son is responsible hands, academically & socially. What wonderful people. The guidance dept is regularly involved in assuring the maturation of the children with respect for each other. It is zero tolerance for bullying. It is focused on enrichment & growth, both spiritual & academic. It appears to have little turnover of faculty staff b/c they collaborate well (1 retired, 1 left for promotion). Any uniformity is part of the learning that we are 1 community & hopefully this keeps any cliques from forming. The class size is fine, 2 adults per class plus any other adult volunteers, as represented. They look after my son as their own; no issue goes unaddressed, whether they raise it or I do. Before & aftercare programs are great. The clubs are too. My one wish is that clubs met on different days so you could join science and chess club. It is a great place if you are a working parent & a great place if you are stay at home with time to volunteer. Even though our county has great schools, SLS was a great improvement b/c they took note of his individual needs the first week he was there, unlike the public school where they spent the whole year ignoring it. Alleged blue ribbon school in 2010,it seems that many that may have made it that way left. Student to teacher ratio for my child was 30:1 not 14:1 as advertised. There is no room for individuality at this school and what they want is conformists. If you want individual pursuit of intellectual endeavors for your child you will be severely disappointed. Save your money and do NOT send your child here.
