I simply dont understand some of the poor reviews on this site

Our experience with Barrie is excellent. The community is diverse and caring. Academics are challenging and project-based.

We plan for our daughters to attend through Middle and Upper School.

I am extremely satisfied with my daughter's education at Barrie School over the past five years. The Montessori program in the lower elementary has created an environment where my daughter looks forward to attending school each day.

The teachers have consistently been exceptional, implementing the Montessori method in ways that have cultivated my daughter's genuine love of learning. This approach has equipped her with essential life skills, including independence and self-reliance that extend far beyond academic knowledge.
The Barrie community truly functions as an extended family. Parents actively participate in their children's education, creating a supportive network that enhances the learning experience. This sense of community is one of Barrie's greatest strengths.

Diversity and inclusion are woven into the fabric of everything Barrie does. The school doesn't just talk about these values, it lives them daily through its curriculum, activities, and community engagement.

Barrie School is an exceptional educational institution that nurtures the whole child - intellectually, socially, and emotionally. The campus is beautiful and the school presents very well. They promise individual support, a robust athletic department, and academic rigor. The problem is the school is completely disorganized, and doesn't seem to be able to fulfill any of their promises. No one seems to complain when anything goes wrong, something we didn't understand until a student pointed out that the only students who stay at Barrie are ones with family who also work there.

After two commercial breaks from marketing department, we would like to share our observation, perspective. Some are good teachers, communicators, educators, Some not. Some are dedicated their jobs, Some are seasonal. It depends how much you are involved with your child's school to be aware of dynamics. it is good enough school if you don't pay. As a private school and we are the families who pays, we want to see more talented, professional administrators. Also we believe that school is not transparent when you have a difficulty to solve the issue together not to sweep under the rug. Good luck

This is a great school for experiential learning. Children have opportunities in both the Fall and Spring to travel and learn in a hands-on mode with the Fall trips by grade and the Spring trips by choice. The teachers here are awesome and the small class size allows kids to progress at their own place. We highly recommend Barrie.

Please be warned that when I was a parent at Barrie I was asked more than once to write positive reviews for this web site and told what to say. The school then was unsafe, disorganized, and led by a Head of School with no moral compass. My child was abused by one student, bullied by another, fed drugs by a third, and eventually assaulted by a student the HOS was warned by the Head of Upper School he should not admit due to severe psychological problems. Reading todays reviews I cant help but think things havent changed. Old HOS is gone but problems remain. So I think the issue lies with the Board, the refusal to downsize to a student body that can be properly supported, or simply the financial difficulty in sustaining a school with a truly bad reputation. Please stay away for your childs sake. And those of you writing these great reviews please refuse to do so in the future, or if youre not being pressured, please take a closer look around you.

We have two kids at Barrie. They have very different personalities and interests. They are both doing incredibly well in all areas. Over the three years they have been at Barrie they have developed in to well-rounded, well-informed and confident students. Their academic abilities reflect this. On the social and personal development side they are gaining great insides and awareness. I can't imagine a better school for them than Barrie.

The upper school of Barrie is overall not the worst, but has a few glaring issues. For one, both students and parents rarely get informed about any type of event, closure, field trip, etc, causing students to be under prepared for most of them. Second, the support for students who struggle with understanding work is very low, with most teachers just trying to give them more work in response. Finally, the support for students with mental health concerns is zero to none unless they are informed by parents. While there are attempts to better this, and i commend them for that, I still think there are massive improvements that can be made.

This school is highly disorganized, unsafe, and, as other parents have noted, does not provide students with learning differences with enough support. It promises parents everything and delivers absolutely nothing. My children are the same age, were put in different classes and then one of them was mistakenly put in an entirely different grade from their sibling this year. Neither the school nor the teacher disclosed the issue or tried to figure out a solution, I found out and tried to address it. Their response and action essentially caused emotional damage to my child that they continue to talk about 6 months later. There are no safety measures on campus, as a parent, I was never informed about any procedures - fire drills, armed strangers on campus or active shooters, nothing. Before and after care is basically outdoor play with little supervision (depending on the teacher). If I had known about the quality of the education, the lack of safety, lack of support for IEPs...I would never have enrolled them. Learn from my mistake and find another school or daycare for your child/children.

The Head of School has created a toxic environment for staff members . The high turn over rate of teachers and principals is directly related to his leadership . The school promises to meet students where they are and provide services and support with those with learning and behavioral challenges, yet they do not have personnel to support those positions. The focus of the HOS is to get children in the door and then when things dont work out , the family is asked to leave or choose to leave due to the lack of services .

This school has a lot of problems. Its lost the best teachers prior to and during the pandemic. They kept leaving one after the other, which tells you what it's like there. Another issue is they do not take bullying seriously at all nor do they give adequate support to students affected by it after they know about the situation. They do not support children with special learning needs, like public schools do. In fact the teachers become bullies of sorts themselves until the students no longer want to attend school there. I've seen this first hand more than once.

Mixed. Our oldest child benefitted greatly from Lower L. Upper L probably scarred this child for life, because teachers and administration don't bother doing what's necessary to create an ideal learning environment. Doing so doesn't just mean hiring teachers and building eco-friendly classrooms. It means being willing to impose discipline fairly. Not allowing teachers to "write off" a student. Not allowing bullying to fester and writing it off as "boys will be boys" or "this is just what tweens do nowadays".

Those responses wouldn't be acceptable at a public school. Why on Earth would someone make the huge financial sacrifice to sent their kids to private school only to deal with the same things?

Lower L, by comparison, was great for my oldest and youngest child.

If anything, we, as parents, made the mistake of assuming Upper L would follow suit.

The rationale behind homework isn't well explained, nor does the school have a unified policy. It is largely left to the whims of your child's specific teachers. In Upper L, the teachers assigned work intermittently, which made it extremely hard to keep up with as a parent. They sometimes sent email reminders to parents, and other times didn't at all, but would then send emails at the last minute putting parents on blast for overdue assignments when we didn't even know our kids had them (and sometimes the kids didn't either).

Lower L was much more communicative, but even then, the kids could go weeks without any homework if a teacher was suddenly out sick.

The school needs to have a clear and unified philosophy on homework and this needs to be clearly communicated to parents.

We experienced the tale of two Barries during our time there. Our oldest child joined Lower L and matriculated to Upper L. The Lower L teachers are experienced, take a "whole child" approach to teaching and really seem to care about the kids.

The Upper L teachers were, to be frank, simply not good. They didn't manage the personalities in the classroom effectively, which lead to recurring issues of bullying and teachers showing clear favoritism to certain kids which creates a toxic environment. When issues arose between our child and the child of a faculty member, the teachers and school leadership blatantly sided with the child of the faculty member and did nothing to hold said child accountable.

While our Lower L experience was great, things went so horribly in Upper L that we are no longer interested in having any of our kids remain at Barrie. It is like Lord Of The Flies. The teachers have no control of their classroom and the head of school is feckless.

The Head of School and Head of Montessori both were replaced during our time at Barrie. While the transition from the outgoing HoS to his replacement was smooth, the HoM was unceremoniously let go in a tersely worded email with no details. Her replacement was hired on an interim basis, and displayed the exact level of ownership that you'd expect someone on a temp job to exhibit. But she is not ultimately the problem. The Head of School is, as everything starts and begins with him.

When our child experienced issues with bullying I suggested that the HoS make himself more visible in Upper L to make it clear to students what acceptable behavior was, and what was to be expected from him. Instead, the HoS took an ultra-liberal Bay Area approach to crisis management and created a "panel discussion" that would allow the kids to establish a code of conduct for themselves.

I'll let you guess how that turned out.

Leadership begins and ends at the top. If you don't have a strong leader who is unafraid to step up when there are critical issues plaguing students, even after multiple parents call you out for such lack of leadership, then you're going to run into some huge issues over time.

The Barrie School is an embarrassing longform Washington Post Magazine article just waiting to happen.

I have three children who are lucky enough to attend the Barrie School. This is not just a school, this is a community that is devoted to making this world a better place by instilling strong values, top level education, and a sense of purpose into each of their students.
Barrie has a place for everyone and everyone has a place at Barrie. The student body is small and incredibly diverse. As a student at Barrie you learn quickly to embrace what makes you unique and to embraces differences. It is not unusual to have my house full of students ranging from 9th to 12th graders with a huge variety of cultural backgrounds, all laughing together. Watching them makes my heart happy.
In terms of education, Barrie hits its mark. The faculty at Barrie is as unique and diverse as the students themselves. Notice I refer to them as faculty because these are not just teachers, these are university level faculty. The teachers are passionate about the subjects they teach and that passion oozes through in their teaching. The Humanities program (where they combine both history and English into one) is a corner stone of this school. The students don't just read texts, they explore literature, they dissect history. They are pushed to think critically about events that have shaped our global world. The Model UN program is another standout feature of this school. With some of the best guidance from the Model UN faculty, these students are pushed to work outside their comfort zone to begin to see the world from so many perspectives.
And then there is science and math.....the physics teacher is a true standout. Every student waits to get into his class, and no one wants to leave it. He brings science to life for these young people, and he makes scientist out of them.
Math is another stand out. The math department is ridiculously amazing. The faculty here could revile any college professor. Students get so much support that they truly sore. It is not unusual to have a group of AP Calculus students meeting on a Saturday morning with their teacher, eating bagels and working on math.
There are so many opportunities at Barrie.
The standout here is that these kids learn who they truly are, and then thrive.

The faculty at Barrie is the true highlight of this school. The prep faculty are university level teachers. They not only are passionate about their subjects, but they are also passionate about their students. My kids value their relationships with their teachers. They are true mentors.

The head of prep is a truly a standout. Kristin is not only incredibly smart, and a strong leader, but she also has the ability to connect with the students. She is organized, professional, and most importantly kind. She has the skills to problem solve all kinds of issues and does so with great poise.

I really like Barrie as a school community It's a beautiful campus and I just love that they have a equestrian program .
I have My daughter in lower el and my son in Middle school .
Coming from an European culture I have always felt supported when ever I have had questions.
I have only meet wonderful and open minded staff . Both teachers and administrators are very nice people.
I would recommend to visit and have a tour just to get your own experience

I am very please with Barrie for my two children. This is their fourth year and they are in both the Montessori and Prep division. The school is very welcoming and inclusive. The staff is supportive and has helped both my children achieve in ways they were not able to before in their previous school. Barrie's campus is beautiful, and the exposure to the outdoors is amazing. The campus is set in a wooded area, with ponds, streams and a horse stable. My daughter is an equestrian and participates in the riding program. There are few other schools in our area that offer these kinds of opportunities. The students take many field trips each year, and the Prep students have the opportunity to travel locally, nationally and internationally. The exposure to the outside word, and other cultures is wonderful. Furthermore, the school is very diverse, and I'm very happy my children have the opportunity to find commonality and friendship regardless of background, culture and differences.
Academically, I couldn't be more pleased. Both my children are thriving. They are becoming very independent and conscious learners, and love coming to school. The faculty and staff are great, as is the support staff such as the counselor, school nurse, learning specialists in both divisions, and administration. I am able to stay in direct communication with the teachers and staff, which is so important to knowing how my children are doing. In addition to school, we are very pleased with the summer camp. My children have the chance to experience the campus in a different way during the summer, and are exposed to many outdoor activities, overnights and excursions. I feel very fortunate for my children to be at Barrie.

I was a high school student here starting in 2005 and graduating with a 3.4 in 2009.

This school is a joke. The teachers play favorites, the administration cares nothing for the arts, opting to build a multimillion dollar soccer/lacross field with a parking lot, and not a dime on the outdated theater, art studio, or music room.

They advertise as a college prep school. They are not. Half of my graduating class went straight into the army.

If you wish for an expensive waste of four years, please go here. If you want an actual education, avoid this school.

We have had a great experience at Barrie this year. Our son was enrolled in the toddler program this year, and we were nervous about sending him to school since he had never been in day care. The team at Barrie worked closely with us on the transition and our teachers even came to visit with us at home to make our child feel comfortable. We have seen him develop in such a positive way and we feel his time at Barrie will leave a lasting impression.

Communication with the faculty, staff and administration is excellent. We got daily notes, photos we could share, and helpful parenting seminars.

Aside from the beautiful campus, the horses, Spanish and yoga, the thing I valued most was that they truly cared about my child. I'll never forget how excited my child's teacher was when my child used the potty at school for the first time. They are definitely invested in this kids.

The only negative about this school would be the price tag. The toddler program is reasonable, but the cost rises dramatically for the primary program. I understand it takes a lot to maintain a school like this, but price was definitely a factor that made us decide not to return for the fall.

I would highly recommend the toddler program to any family looking for a inclusive, caring, and developmentally stimulating place for their child.

I have two boys at Barrie one little one "up the hill" at montesauri and one teen "down the hill" at Barrie Prep.
The campus is incredible which makes the toddler Montessori program a wonderful atmosphere with a lot of outdoor exploring time and caring teachers.
As for the upper school, i don't recommend it. If your child has any learning difficulties they are not trained nor staffed. My older son fell behind academically compared to his peers at public school, especially in Chinese. The language program is terrible after coming from Alice Deal DC public school. For children who enjoy small class room size and who are not that academic, Barrie is a good fit. However if your child has an IEP or 504 plan, Barrie is not the right school.

For the amount of tuition, I would expect to not be harangued so much for money every step of the way. That said, Barrie has some great points and negatives as well. Humanities and Foreign Language is where I feel that Barrie really shines. Both are handled in a novel way that can not be readily found elsewhere. Math is the worst. It is such an important subject, but my child's math teacher regularly acted like she hated teaching, and disliked the students. She barely taught, didn't grade homework or bother responding to requests about grades and talked around pretty much every issue. I consider the math class a waste of the school year. Other subjects, like art, were nice but nothing super special. Low focus on field trips, but they do a lot of hands-on stuff on campus. Science is mediocre at best. Kristin works really hard for everyone and I think she has an even hand in dealing with the students. I also felt that she really understood what it takes to be a good administrator. Some issues, like chronic theft were left unaddressed. There was some bullying as well of exchange students and that was a tragedy for a school that is otherwise so very open and tolerant. You can get most of what you get at Barrie for much less elsewhere. Fall trips and hopeful the Spring study week (off campus activities, many overnight or overseas) were a highlight. The high price just isn't justified, however, especially with the growing class sizes. Don't believe what you read elsewhere about 6 kids per teacherin some of my child's classes it is over 20, and at this price point, that shouldn't be the case.

One of the top values at Barrie is honesty, integrity and fairness. I witness it daily in the relationships my children have with their friends and the teachers at Barrie. There is a true sense of respect for all and value for every person. A friend , in public school, said to my child the other day, "The popular kids are so mean" (in public school). My child who is at barrie in middle school said to his friend, "What is a popular kid?" At Barrie everyone is cared for equally and given respect equally.

My children have been at Barrie for the past 2 years having come from the top public school system in the state. Our experience in the middle school has been exceptional. Hands-on learning, respect for all students and diversity, highly supportive staff and teachers, and a rigorous curriculum. My children are thriving and loving it. Lots of individualized attention and understanding that children learn in different ways. My kids feel supported and cared for, but are becoming strong independent learners and thinkers who will be highly successful in the future. We value the diverse culture at Barrie and the true sense of community that is created. Teachers have been exceptional.

My children have been at Barrie for 10 years. The faculty and staff deliver a rich and rigorous program that teaches students to think. The opportunities offered to students middle and upper school include engaging academic, athletic, artistic, outdoorsy, and international programs. The Campus is beautiful. Students build close relationships with their classmates and their teachers. The proof is in their graduates and current students. You need to visit the campus and see what Barrie is all about!

For the tuition paid, Barrie does not live up to expectations. In the beginning we were attracted to the school because of the campus (very nice and peaceful like a summer camp), but then we noticed that the focus was mostly on collecting tuition and not enough focus and attention on education/teaching kids to think. Most teachers were just average and the "let the kids do whatever they want" attitude didn't work too well with most kids leading to chaos and lack of organization. That is why after a year of attending Barrie's lower school we decided to transfer our son to a Montgomery county school. Educationally & financially leaving Barrie was the best decision we made because he was able to get a quality education and attend some of Montgomery counties best magnet programs. Our son's Montgomery county public school education lead to acceptance to Stanford, Cornell, and UPenn just to name a few. If you are looking for a place that is sheltered from the real world with a mediocre education... then Barrie is the place. However, it would be far wiser to take advantage of the great public schools and magnet school programs in Montgomery, Howard, or Fairfax county, and save the tuition money for college. In the long run you will have a student that is smarter and better prepared to live outside the protective bubble, thus making them able to better compete in the real world.

We have been at the school for 5 years. Overall, it has been a good experience in the lower elementary Montessori program. We have had some terrific, responsive and caring teachers. It has been an excellent fit for our child. As a parent, you know your child best- so look at the school with her/him in mind and ask yourself whether they would thrive in such an environment? It is a beautiful, calm, safe environment, with small classes and Montessori through 5th grade. Definitely a unique school in the hustle-bustle dc/md/va area.

When I decided to go to the barrie school it seemed like a good idea, but it was the opposite. It's so flipping disorganized I never know what's going on. I am currently a sophomore, and I feel that teachers are always coming down hard on me and my classmates. Their ability to plan lessons is pathetic, and I get scolded too often for not knowing EXACTLY what's going on. I hate the bad attitudes some of them always seem to have, and I'm tired of being in constant confusion.

Barrie's student body changed drastically a few years ago under pressure to maintain enrollment. Students not normally admitted were brought in with issues and problems, some of them severe. Barrie was not equipped to support these students, and results in some cases were disastrous. Most surprising was their lack of awareness of the precarious position in which they put themselves and their students. Shocking examples of student-on-student behavior were know to the staff, but nothing done about it. A dangerous way to run a school.

The Barrie school is a very competitive school to gain admissions. Having said that, I still firmly believe that the school takes students based off of a level of success they seem to display upon "the visit". If you have a child that doesn't "shine" they won't take her/him. They seem to only want kids that have the highest potential and that's NOT at all what Montessori is about. Sadly they do rely on and try to maintain a reputation. I just think they should be honest with parents and caregivers about what they are looking for and why instead of having parents and kids go through an admissions process that's really a dead end street.

We enrolled our toddler in the new pre-K (18 mo-2 yrs) program this year and we have been thrilled with our experience. A typical day has involved classroom work time squeezing fresh orange juice, exploring the creek, making milkweed mud balls to plant food for Monarch butterflies, and feeding the ponies. He just turned 2 and has developed language and gross motor skills through the roof and the ability to verbalize his feelings in surprisingly complex and delightful ways. He has weekly class time with Spanish, music, and phys ed specialists, as well as extraordinary full-time early child development educators. He was pottying and dressing himself at school by the time he was 2. We also love that they have a full-time nurse because he has asthma and food allergies and she has always been very vigilant. The older students come to occasionally work with the little kids, which is mutually beneficial, and students of all ages know our child by name. By the time Spring Carnival rolled around, we realized that our toddler had a social life that far extended beyond his little class of 6 kids. We love Barrie School and are blessed to have it in our neighborhood.

Barrie School provides a supportive, innovative, and peaceful learning environment. Once you step onto the campus, it is evident that the students enjoy learning. It has a wonderful 45 acre campus which serves as a classroom for the students. Faculty and staff at Barrie are very supportive and clearly enjoy teaching and learning.

Sensational facility! I have never seen a more compassionate group of teachers and I can honestly say that I think I looked at almost every private preschool in Montgomery county. This school blew my socks off and continues to daily. The campus is every kids dream. They have nature trails, stables, a pond, and all of it is incorporated into their daily teachings. Barrie has been the perfect match for our family!

BARRIE SCHOOL is a great school! The teachers are highly skilled, nurturing, and very involved. AFter 8 years at Barrie we are consistently impressed wtih the high quality of the teachers. Do not waste money by sending your kid to this school. This is one of the worst experience I have ever had. The kids enrolled at other Montessori schools are equally or more smarter. Teachers think they are smart and do not take care of the kids and their education. This school is interested in only making money from fundraising. Teachers never take any responsibilities but would want gifts and encouragements. I would never recommend this school for any class since it is a waste of money. I would prefer my kid to go to a place where the true world is projected. Millionaires might disagree with my comment but I would not recommend this school for a typical middle class family. I would recommend to put their hard earned money in good Montessori schools elsewhere.

Upper School Review: Barrie provides an utter lack of academic rigor and a paltry electives component - especially in the arts and athletics department. Disciplinary actions are inconsistent and lack follow-through. For a school that emphasizes the harmonious development of the "whole child," I find it bizarre that teachers will often curse at the students and gossip about them with other parents. 6 weeks before an international study trip, there is no curriculum or schedule in place. Over-priced tuition, declining enrollment, high staff turnover, poor curriculum = a bad deal. Invest elsewhere. My only regret about Barrie is that I did not send my son there sooner. He came in 8th grade after a terrible experience in public middle school in one of the "best" school districts in the nation. At Barrie, he got the individual attention he needed. His ADHD was understood and taken into account -- not like public school where they stuck him in a room by himself and told him to "learn." At Barrie, the experiential learning and hands-on classwork was perfect for him. Barrie allows for exploration and learning. That said, the courses are rigorous and challenging. Many Barrie graduates say their course work at Barrie was more difficult than their freshman year courses in college. Barrie will work with your student. There is no bullying at Barrie because the school is so small it cannot be hidden. Administrators are often in the classroom and teachers also coach and handle extracurriculars. There are always people looking out for you at Barrie. The most amazing thing is that the STUDENTS look out for one another. Barrie is a caring place. Students both with-- and without --learning differences do very well here. Oh, and the diversity is AMAZING.

My daughter started Barrie this year in the mddle school and we are very happy. Barrie is a perfect fit for her. She is thriving both academically and socially. We have found the teachers to be exceptional and very accessible. The teaching staff sets the kids up for success which is so important. My daugther describes Barrie as a place she can really be herself. She really like the kids and loves going to school.

Barrie School should be concerned with its poor academics and lack of discipline rather than bragging about their green buildings.There are much better schools out there that cost less.
