We are thrilled to have our two children attend the Julia Brown School of Laurel. Our older child has thrived and become more resilient and independent, and our younger child's language skills have increased substantially. The staff are caring and compassionate while maintaining high expectations. Our children look forward to attending each day. We love JBS!

Julia Brown School in Laurel is an institution that deserves nothing but praise. The staff is exceptional from top to bottom, beginning with the Director, Ms. Moller. The school is exceptionally clean, respectful, and has a wonderful family-like atmosphere. Ms. Moller is extremely welcoming and knows each student by name.

Her staff is extremely invested in the education of each and every student. They support and steer the kids in the right direction while allowing and encouraging self-growth so they can discover and understand who they are. They also do a fantastic job of being inclusive, giving every child a voice, teaching them to be respectful, and preparing them to make responsible decisions throughout the day. Thanks to a rigorous curriculum that they follow every day, your child will be ahead of the curve in most academic areas. For instance, my daughter teaches me new words every day and is always eager to tell me about her Latin language studies when she gets home.

Overall, the price is worth the admission. If you want your child to excel and thrive independently without having to worry about being lost in a large school system, Julia Brown is the school for you.

My son attended from 2.5 - 3 years of age and participated in both the academic and day care portions. We would've stayed if we could.
Ms. Möller is wonderfully patient, helpful, supportives, knowledgeable, and professional to orient families to what they would gain from being part of the JBS group. After visiting three places, I found JBS to be a great school. JBS fosters an independent learning environment where children can independently grow and develop their skills, while learning and gaining comfort in having a consistent structure they are part of. We found it equally helpful that the daycare portion of his day gave him the time to socialize with his classmates in their activities.
If a parent is looking for primarily a social environment, JBS may not be the best fit for a child that ONLY attends the academic session. It is a great place for a child to gradually ease into a social setting while having opportunities to focus on just their own self. Overall, I'm impressed and happy with the skills my son came home with, the friends he made, and the teachers he loved. I appreciate the effort every teacher invests to learn all kids' names even if they're not their student.
I wish that we lived closer to the school!!

Each student is treated to an individualized approach. My daughter started at 2 and was bumped up from the toddler program to primary after 1 month. At age 3 she was diagnosed with leukemia and they completely supported us and her in her learning needs and challenges. Providing an unbiased classroom and playground environment for her.

They have zero tolerance and immediately address any questions, concerns or issues that your child or a parent may have.

Posted: December 7, 2017

They encourage work at home and coordination between school and home to maintain good balance and consistency

Posted: December 7, 2017

They ensure communication between students, teachers, staff and parents. They are zero tolerant of any issues but address in an educational and compassionate way always teaching lessons about not just curriculum but social and emotional and moral.

This school has been amazing for us. Since my daughter's diagnosis of cancer they have been supportive and encouraging. Compassionate and caring. Willing to work with and her to help her learn while working with and around her special needs. I would keep her here forever if they decided to go further than 3rd grade.

My son has been going to Julia Brown Montessori for over a year and half. He is an active, creative boy and I was worried how he would not be able to sit still in a traditional classroom. JBS has been wonderful and helped him to focus. One day I asked him which teacher was his favorite - he looked at me puzzled and replied, "all of them". He really does like all his teachers and I have never heard him say one negative thing or express words of frustration. In fact, its usually pride he expresses for a project he worked on or a new activity he mastered. The administrator of the school has always been very helpful, professional and attentive to my concerns, as well as my sons (he will let you know!). If I call and ask about behavior or a time to discuss his progress with his teacher they have always worked with my schedule. I would agree Montessori isn't for everyone. But I have seen a big difference in my son from his manners, behavior, focus and an overall love for learning.

This school is absolutely the worst place to invest your money and or your children's success in. First of all, JBMS's mission is a false pretense of the Montessori way. They operate in a closed society, in which as a parent you will have no insight or input into the walls of JBMS. God forbid a parent is observant and not afraid to speak up. Your insight or views are not welcomed. At JBMS parents have no clue how the children's day went; if they ate/or didn't eat, if they slept or not, what they worked on or with, how their mood was, & the list goes on. Parents are instructed to drop kids off at the door and pick up at the door. You are not permitted to go any further at any time. The environment is extremely militant. There is no sense of love or compassion. The teachers speak to the children in very stern unappealing tones. They have a very high staff turn over and lack staff. They use the excuse that your child doesn't have set teachers to compensate for their inadequate staff. Most times you will observe one teacher in a classroom with as many as 15-20 children. Dare you if you say something about anything. Trust when I say, do not send your precious investments to JBMS.

Julia brown montessori is a very quite school at an affordable price to cater all section of the society and more diverse. The montessori methods are adopted but children and instructors are actually quiet normally children will make noise and be active but here kids are not that physically active may be the environment suits certain type of kids but the interaction between teachers and students may be OK so i would rate this as a OK school but for this price to get montessori education this is unbeatable but i recommend to look at other montessori schools keeping this a secondary option.

My son and daughter both attended the Julia Brown Montessori school in laurel and I can say they loved it! The teachers, assistants and administrator were very kind, caring and compassionate. My children enjoyed the beautiful lessons and developed a sense of pride in the their accomplishments. The classrooms were clean, organized and inviting for the children and you could tell the teachers invested a lot of time and making the classrooms warm and welcoming. If I had a question or issue to discuss with the teacher, the administrator would make sure that I was always contacted in a reasonable time. Everyday when I dropped my kids off, I knew they were going to be well taken care of in a safe learning environment. I was very impressed by the level of learning and excited to see my daughter excel in reading as well as my son in Math. This is a wonderful school environment and I am glad that our children had the opportunity to learn so much at such a young age. My children are now attending public school and their teachers are impressed with how much they know and how respectful they are to staff and class mates. I am very happy they attended this school!

Firstly, let me begin by saying that Montessori education is not for everyone. My eldest, now 18, went one year to a Montessori in AZ and did just fine in the MD public school system. My 16 year old daughter has never attended Montessori school, and is also doing very well through the public school system. My youngest came out of the womb obstinate, mouthy and ready to run the household. He required a little more in the way of rules and regulations. Yes, this school can seem a tad rigid at times, but I have to believe that, especially when they are younger, the kids are given very distinct boundaries and the teachers' expectations are set for a reason. My son is in his 5th and final year here at JBMS in Laurel (PK-3rd). It was a tough adjustment for him for probably the first month; suddenly he wasn't telling everyone around him that he's in charge. He has come out of this school respectful, independent, thoughtful of other's feelings, and easily 2 grades ahead academically. He and my 16 year old were literally doing the same homework last week. My son is 8. He loves school! He loves learning and he has loved his teachers (Guavara and Sensenig) and the Directress of JBMS!

One thing that I think most parents who send their children to a montessori style school love is the mission that was started by Maria Montessori herself, that each child should be able to create their own space to learn and to develop in an environment that caters to that. I feel that this julia brown montessori school in laurel, md FAILS to do so. The environment is very choking, almost militaristic, and the teachers nit pick at every rule that is set for the child. It is sad and unfortunate. I would not recommend anyone sending their child here.
