My daughter started in 2020 at St. John's Episcopal School so she could attend in person learning. I only intended to stay until the public schools reopened. However, after finding out how wonderful this school is, I would not dream of taking her out. The teachers are great. The education is excellent. In addition to learning math and reading, the kids are learning how to play piano in music, they are learning Spanish 3 days a week and they have an amazing stem program. I can't say enough good things about St John's.

My son is in Pre-K3 at the school. Ms. Dickerson is absolutely amazing, and so are all the children in his class as well. When we did our tour of the school both my wife and I noticed just how calm and warm it was in the environment. All the kids were very well behaved and polite whether supervised or not in the halls.

We also took a guided tour during open house which was led by two current students who were in 5th and 7th grade. They were absolute superstars and so composed for their age. They were just exceptional and their love for the school and environment was undeniable. We had already enrolled prior but it gave our son a chance to be around the school more. These two young ladies just further confirmed we made a great decision.

When my son is at SJES my wife and I know he’s being loved, cared for, and protected. Everyone one we speak with at the school is wonderful from Doug Perkins and wife, to Holly, and the teachers. My son loves his school and cries when it’s the weekend.

We look forward to him remaining at this school through 8th grade.

St. John's has been an amazing school for my son. The teachers are all-in and they expect the same from the students. They teach the children not just what they want them to learn, but how to learn. St. John's fosters a positive learning environment. My son is so happy at this school.

While the students have homework each night and over the weekend, I have found that my son has learned how to manage his time more effectively than when he was in a public school environment. There is a focus on organization and time management that has allowed him to balance the academic rigor and extracurricular activities both through school and outside of school.

I have been very pleased with the overall school, community, faculty and staff. There is a genuine community feeling when you walk through the doors. The academic rigor is challenging and helps each student rise to a higher potential. The students are supported in this very caring environment. This school is a hidden gem and we feel it is worth every penny and more, for what it has offered our family.

Our three daughters started at St. John’s 2 years ago, when our family moved to the area. Our kids love St. John’s and as parents, my wife and I are very pleased with the School. Our kids are encouraged and challenged on a daily basis by a positive community of learners. As new students our kids were welcomed with open arms. We love the Schools diversity and absence of any sense of entitlement. We thoroughly investigated all of the Schools in the Olney and Potomac areas and St.Johns stood out for its academic rigor, arts programs and character building approach. It represents real VALUE in today’s private school market. Our family strongly recommends STJES!

We were new to the St. John's family last year and could not be happier. Our then 5th grader integrated in so easily. She made new friends, and is thriving under the tutilage of a fine faculty. Now a 6th grader, she is more than prepared to excel and meet the challenges of the rigorous academics. Our family is incredibly grateful we found St. John's. Our daughter is trying things we never dreamed of like cross country, soccer, art club, and is involved in the special OASIS music program. This music program is outstanding.

As a highly involved parent, I have personally worked with the head of school at St. John’s, and can say with confidence that Tom Stevens is the perfect person for the positon. Mr. Stevens is an extensively educated leader, who is both very compassionate, but stern when necessary. Tom knows every student in the school, and warmly greets them with a handshake or high five almost every morning.

St. John’s is such a tight knit family, that they really do not experience problems with bullying. In the rare instance where teachers or administrators have needed to address impolite or bullying behavior, I feel as though they have done a good job. The administrators/teachers really take the time to help children work out their differences.

St. John’s is academically rigorous, and the students always perform at a grade level (or more) above their current grade. The homework always matches what it taught in the class, and can be difficult at times, but I have witnessed the growth in my children and their feelings of accomplishment at mastering difficult material.

We adore the teachers at St. John’s. They are warm, caring, and all highly educated. In the 6 years that we have been at St. John’s I have loved EVERY teacher my children have had. One of my favorite aspects about the school is that they don’t just focus on academics, but also focus on character development with their “Traits for Success”. I have personally witnessed tremendous social and emotional growth in my children as they have been exposed to the nine St. John’s Traits for Success, including honesty, integrity, etc.

My husband and I decided to enroll our daughter in the St. John’s Episcopal School Pre-K 3 class when traditional child care was not working for us. I assumed that we would enroll her in St. John’s for the two years of Pre-K 3 and Pre-K 4, and when the time rolled around for kindergarten, we would place her in a Montgomery County public school (as Montgomery county is recognized for its excellent schools). However, the teachers and staff at St. John’s have made our decision to stay with St. John’s well worth it. Our daughter, and now our son, have met wonderful friends, and enjoy participating in all of the activities that the teachers and staff painstakingly take the time to plan. From a parent's perspective, we love the small class sizes, and the fact that the teachers make our children comfortable and happy. Additionally we have witnessed firsthand the success of the school’s work on character development, as all of the students are exceptionally polite, and friendly. Not only has St. John’s provided a warm, safe, and fun environment for our children, but it also does not hurt that our children have really excelled academically during the course of their education with St. John’s. I never thought I would send my kids to a private school, because I just could not understand how they were worth the extra cost, but after five wonderful years, my husband and I know that because of the faculty and staff at St. John's, no matter what, our children will stay for the long run. We love the school!

We have been at this school for two years, going on three. In the beginning of the year, the amount of homework assigned seemed like it took too much time in the evening. By the middle of the school year, not a big deal. By the end, breezing through it. I appreciate the school challenging us, as a family, to realize that homework was part of our evening routine and not a big deal.

The Spanish teacher was fine. One of the upper school math teachers was horrible. He is an English major trying to teach math. His mother preceded him in this position which is no qualification for his hiring. Too many other teachers are outright racists.

I witnessed children being bullied by the teachers. How can a child learn compassion and respect with they are disrespected and treated with disdain if they learn differently and do not conform to the rigid expectations of some teachers and administrators?

Tom Stevens and Sharon Rippen are very ineffective leaders and seem to rely on their undeserved reputations. They prefer students who are white, female, Asian or wealthy.
Too many black and brown children were tormented by these two people and thrown out of the school. The Episcopal Church is complicit in their behavior; they should be ashamed at how some of the children are treated. The student body is now 80% white and there are no black teachers to advocate or understand black children. Buyers beware and be very aware.

Our child was a student in the upper school only. His/her experience was absolutely horrible. He/she experienced PTSD after attending this school which required counseling to heal. I am so sorry that we selected this school for him/her.

We moved our Son from the public school in 7th grade. We are thrilled with the focus on academics and character development of each student. The teachers devote time to each student and develop a challenging curriculum to meet each students needs to keep them striving, engaged and excited to learn. Last November, we transferred our daughter into the Preschool 4 class at St. John's. After a difficult experience at another school, we were so grateful for the kindness and consideration of the admissions director, head of school and Preschool 4 teacher during our initial visits. The small class size, inclusiveness, and emphasis on character-building were the perfect combination for our daughter. She is now more confident than ever and is thriving both socially and spiritually.

Additionally, opportunities to see all of the students perform several times throughout the year, including the International Festival where all classes do a thoughtfully choreographed dance routine and display appreciation for other cultures and customs, is more than we could have expected. Filled our hearts with so much joy and pride.

Top notch school with amazing families and staff. You won't regret sending your child(ren) here!

Wonderful school! I have two children who have been attending St. John's for more than 7 years and the school has done an outstanding job preparing them for high school and beyond. They have an outstanding academic program overall with a very strong and dedicated staff and faculty. The foundation they establish for the students is pretty remarkable. The technology is very advanced when I compare with friends and family from other area schools. The campus is always clean and well maintained thanks to a very dedicated plant management team. And the head of school, Tom Stevens, is a one of a kind with such passion and dedication to operate a best of class school yet takes the time to know every students name.

St. John's takes each child where he/she is and works to ensure that no stone is left unturned when helping him/her find success. Students at St. John's are happy, engaged, and challenged. Our sons have been at STJES since 2009. We are very pleased. They have both grown academically and benefit from the small class size and accelerated instruction. They have also grown as young men, which I think comes partly from STJES s emphasis on character. Our older son went to Costa Rica last year with his class and will go to Belize this year. We are confident that STJES has prepared him well for high school.

My son has been in St. John since Kindergarten, he is in third grade now. It has been wonderful. There are a lot of great things about the school, but the number one on my list is how we feel safe in this school. The faculty and staff care about the students like they were their own children. Academic is excellent. We don't have to worry about this, the teachers made sure there is no kid left behind. I agree with previous post regarding the students, we too are very impress with their politeness.

If you are looking for results from a school I can strongly state that as far as academics and supporting the development of good kids are concerned the school has succeeded admirably. There are many extremely strong teachers that can individualize their education to the child, most of which have been there for a long time, and beyond that they care strongly about them. The administration has been stable for the last three years, which has helped through the rough economic times that have impacted enrollment recently. In addition, having gifted kids, they are willing to work with the parents to try to find the best approach. Nothing is perfect at any school, but I feel this one is trustworthy in responding to hard questions and more than competent in getting good and sometimes great results. One small unsold fact is the aftercare program has been wonderful for our children in large part due to the lady that runs it.

We have been St. John's parents for the past 7 years and have seen the transitions the school has gone through, some great and some not so great, but one thing has always remained the same; the fact that our daughters (9 & 12) continue to get superior education by a group of loving and caring set of teachers who truly have a passion for what they do. To us that is priceless!

We love St John's and feel that it does a great job of providing children with a fabulous education. It is more expensive than some of the other schools in the area, but we firmly believe that you get what you pay for at St. John's. The class size is small, and the teachers really get to know the children and their learning styles. We have 2 children, and they have very different learning styles and needs. The teachers at St John's know when to prod them along, help them when they need help, and are always available to look for a solution. I have found every teacher to be very accessible when needed. My oldest has moved very successful on to High School. He has found that he and his classmates from St. John's have been very successful in High School. They are highly represented in the AP and Honors Programs. Additionally, they hold leadership positions in their high school. I think that much of this was cultivated at St. John's where there were many leadership opportunities, and class participation, public speaking, and becoming an advocate for your education is encouraged.

St. John's Episcopal school is a wonderful place to educate your children. The faculty and staff are amazing, and know every child at the school. The students almost always get into their first choice of schools after graduating in the eighth grade. My daughter has been there for seven years, and loves the school. Her performance on standardized testing is in the very high end of the spectrum, due mostly to the terrific education she receives at St. John's. Just as important, whenever we drop her off at school, we never have any fears or concerns about her safety or well-being. I would highly recommend St. John's Episcopal school to anyone looking for a high-quality and safe environment for their children.

We have had 3 children at St. John's over a span of 15 years.I have had children in the public school system and in several different private schools and St. John's is the best. My youngest will be entering 5th grade in the fall. She and we love it. She is challenged academically. She is very intelligent but not always diligent or disciplined. Her teachers have really brought out the best in her abilities in both math and writing and improved her sense of discipline - they don't miss a trick! There is also a strong emphasis on character and behavior. The school has an outstanding arts program too. All of the St. John's kids that I run into in the community are unfailingly poised, articulate and polite. They know how to conduct themselves with adults - how to carry on a polite conversation and be respectful and articulate. This reflects the school's emphasis on personal accountability -- I can always tells a "St. John's kid" when I meet them. Frankly, when I am around other, non-St. John's students, I am always surprised at their unruliness and lack of discipline.

We started at St. John's several years ago, and we are very happy. My daughter is becoming a wonderful and well-rounded young adult. St. John's academics are exceptional, and the teachers are very supportive. If your child needs help, it is available. If they excel in a subject, they will be pushed. We like the fact that St. John's not only offers academics but also teaches good morals. If I had three words to describe what I believe St John's provides they are; excellence, integrity and community. If you are interested in a quality education for your child you cannot go wrong with St John's.

St. John's used to be a very good school, but I'm concerned about its future. After several upheavals in its staff and administration from 2010-2012 (3 new principals, teachers leaving in droves), it's unclear whether St. John's can regain its footing and continue to maintain academic excellence and retain motivated, engaged teaching staff. Enrollment is plummeting sadly, because some parents are fed up with the instability. There are only 9 children in 2nd grade this year, and 7 in 1st grade. St. John's is a good school, but the hefty the price tag (and continuous tuition hikes) and administrative turmoil are causing many parents to look elsewhere. And I'm one of them.

We have been at St. John's for eight years. It is the whole package: accelerated academics with caring, amazing teachers, faith and character development, with focus on success traits and wonderful leadership-building for a diverse body of students! While the school has undergone some changes over the past three years, the foundation is still strong and the school is heading in a better direction, keeping up with changing times and continuing to focus on what is important: our children! We have been so happy with our child's education at St. John's and know that he will have a successful high school experience thanks to the amazing elementary and middle school years that have more than prepared him for an excellent future.

St. John's is a terrific school. Both of our children have attended since K and our oldest is now in 7th grade. You are not just investing in their education but their future when you send a child to St. John's. We know our kids are being given a great education and taught the values and character traits they need to become outstanding adults. Priceless!

There is a reason for the dwindling enrollment: a lot of transition occurring with the administration and teachers. As with most schools, teacher turnover cannot be controlled but the amount of turnover from the 2010-2011 school year to the school year 2011-2012 is large and the school is starting with it 3rd headmaster in as many years and a new administration staff. St. John s seems to have lost it focus and it is not following its stated education mission.

I saw below someone wrote about the lack of diversity at St. John's, however we are a diverse first year family and have found a wonderful abundance of great, diverse families in the amazing preschool program and the lower school. I don't know the exact number, but a lot of the new families this year are diverse. We could not be happier at St. John's with the small classes, caring, well-educated teachers who dedicate their entire day to my children. It's the best decision we ever made.
