Caring leadership. Caring teachers. They always have time to talk. They take a wholistic approach and work well with families. Great job at adapting curriculum.

A very collaborative, team approach with parents, as long as parents are committed to collaborating themselves. For kids balancing sports with academics there’s good in school opportunities to complete homework. There is also a gracious approach to completing assignments - as long as a student takes advantage of this unique opportunity to get their work done.

Teachers care for the whole student - even showing up for non-school events and sports to show their support. They work closely with students to help them succeed without doing it for them or putting them down. Some teachers are particularly gifted about connecting with resistant students who need to be drawn out, not just academically but also socially and emotionally.

The intentional structures designed to bring out good character also challenges students to rise to the challenge - there are several including school ambassadors and mentors, not to mention athletics.

It starts from the top: Headmaster Frank Mills takes a personal interest in students and has a great executive team and faculty. Students did him and members of the team very approachable.

Kids with learning challenges and differences need to be in a unique environment to survive and especially to thrive. While at some point that might change as they age, it is crucial in the pre-college years so that they can blossom and flourish where they would otherwise drown in regular public school system, even with customized supports.

A dedicated Dean of Students has experience in this area and strategically and appropriately leverages other students to provide s positive example.

Most teachers at Chelsea are caring but the overall environment is not good. Chelsea is grades 5-12 with 70 students. It is critical that LD kids also be routinely exposed to non-disabled peers so that they can witness age appropriate interaction. That can not occur when you are in a small 100% LD school class. Being surrounded with only LD kids is counterproductive. There are a few teachers who let their students get away with very poor conduct. It isn't helpful to instill in any kid that their poor choices will be excused in life- these kids learn differently but they still MUST learn accountability!!! One of the teachers is the opposite, she is always yelling and putting the kids down for not comprehending the material fast enough. She speaks improper English, too. our child is very active but found little in terms of afterschool activities. Chelsea has so few students, so there is no school play, no football team, school dances, etc. Chelsea fails to provide a complete high school experience.

Chelsea should be free. It cost a lot of money for no good reason. I had gone to 3 other schools before that were free. Chelsea was the same as them. I did'nt learn better at Chelsea. Some of the teachers are nice and they try to teach you. Other teachers at chelsea yell and make you feel like you are a looser. Some days It was like being in jail. The kids are alright but it is small. I learned more and had a better school life at all my other schools.

I don't think Chelsea is so great. Half teachers are helpful the other half just pass you thru even tho you don't learn or get angry when you can't understand. Not so different than my local public, really. At least my public had a large class where you can meet friends you have things in common with. Not much to do at Chelsea. No track or football, no band, no choir. Hard to tolerate the same 10 kids everyday.

The Chelsea School is a hidden treasusre in Silver Spring. It is a school for students who have language based learning disabilities. However the course work is rigourous and the students excel in many areas. They have an Honor Society, sports teams and a great community outreach program. The students, parents and teachers work together to make Chelsea a great place for students to learn and grow. My son has gone from being a student who didn't care much for school to one who works independently and is excited about going to school each day. I would recommend Chelses to any parent who is looking for a school like Chelsea for their child.
