Advice to Management: Pros:

- Families are generally supportive, and working with the children was the most rewarding part of the job.
- The campus and facilities are well-maintained.

Cons:
- Leadership fosters a toxic and hostile work environment where favoritism is common.
- Lack of transparency and accountability from administration; concerns raised by staff are often dismissed or turned back against them.
- Inconsistent enforcement of policies and expectations, creating confusion and unfair treatment among teachers.
- Lack of support for teachers
- High turnover among teachers due to stress, lack of support, and the culture of fear.

I've grown concerned about the direction of the middle school. Enrollment seems to be dropping. There have been ongoing behavior problems and bullying that do not seem to be addressed. There are a lot of cliques and newer students seem to have a hard time feeling like they belong. Faculty members seem to disappear without explanation on a fairly regular basis. Instead of trying to do a few things really well, the school tries to be all things to all people, shoehorning too many subjects and activities into the schedule. Kids and teachers seem constantly pulled in too many directions. It might be a good place for pre-school and elementary school, but there seems to be a lot of turmoil in grades 5 through 8. So if your child is older, be sure to ask questions and talk to other parents before enrolling your child.

Research this school thoroughly
There is no differentiation in math
Bullying that isnt addressed
Multiple students have complained about a middle school math teacher who is rude and disrespectful towards students . Administration sweeps her behavior under the rug and shes allowed to bully and disrespect students. Shes a permanent fixture at the school and it doesnt matter who complains nothing ever happens.
Theres a lot of nepotism.. parents who become leaders of the school, friends appointing friends to leadership.. clicky environment
Even students who graduated from ST Annes have complained about this math teacher. One day shes nice and another shes mean. She has adult temper tantrums in the classroom.
There has been a mass exodus of teachers leaving the school for various reasons. Lots of turnover with teachers.

I would think twice before sending my child here!

Amazing school. My kid has been here since kindergarten. Right in the middle, the 5/6 grade math teacher is very toxic. Its a pretty hard school but the friends are amazing and there are no cliques because its so small, everyone is friends!

I have to take issue with the Jan 2024 review by a parent calling out a "toxic" math teacher. As someone who has first-hand knowledge of this teacher from both the parent and employee perspective, I find the word "toxic" to be shockingly inaccurate and perhaps bordering on slanderous. Stern? Yes. Direct? Yes. Loving? Absolutely. Compassionate? Without question. Generous? To a fault.
In my experience, this teacher is 100% committed to the development and success of every child. She trains them to consider what is right and wrong, kind and unkind, and does so in reasonable and constructive ways. Yes she has been there for many years, and yes her methods and mannerisms may be different than some younger teachers, but she is someone that many students and faculty look to for help. Far from being a toxic influence, she provides a moral compass for everyone around her and holds students to account in a compassionate way. While I respect that the parent/reviewer had a bad experience, I feel it is important to share a contrasting perspective.

I waited a long time to write this review as I wanted to be as fair as possible . I wanted to be objective and give my strong emotions a chance to settle. My conflict stemmed from the fact that most of her experiences were so very positive! Was it fair to call out a school for the toxic behavior of one teacher? But as that teacher is still there and knowing that if I had known what my daughter would have had to deal with , I would not have chosen St. Annes , it became clear to me that I had to give other parents a heads up so they in turn could make a fully informed decision.
There are a great many things to like, if not love about St. Annes. I was aware the academics were perhaps not quite as rigorous as Key or Severn but I was more concerned about the size of the school , liberal vibe, diversity and the overall sweet community feel. Most teachers were truly committed to Saint Annes's stated values of empathy , compassion etc. In fact, that is why I took so long to really hear my daughter when she spoke about the demeaning , volatile nature of this teacher's variable behavior and the overall toxicity of her classroom. My daughter was loathe to tell me as she loved her other teachers and had made some great friends, she didn't want to rock the boat until things really came to a head.
In talking to other parents, my daughter's experiences were quickly corroborated. How was it possibly okay that these kids never knew what emotional state their teacher would be in on any given day ? While my daughter rarely bore the brunt of this behavior directly , it was very upsetting for her to watch others being treated this way. This moral inconsistency confused her.
How did other parents deal with it ? Well , it turns out this 5/6 th grade math teacher had a reputation and many parents ( knowing this teacher had been there decades and was well connected to the board ) bided their time until they passed on to 7th grade Math , still others just closed their eyes to it. Some parents hired tutors, some took the opportunity to teach their kids the reality of having to take the good with the bad , can't fight City Hall , keep your head down, minimized it etc. Some parents simply didn't have much of a choice as their educational options were limited by finances and/or their child's distinctive social /emotional needs which might be hard to meet elsewhere. In our case however, we had options and we left.

Before enrolling your child, make sure you dig beneath the surface on this school and do your due diligence on its mission and frankly, its politics. Being a private, Christian school we made the assumption that there would be a faith based element to the education rooted in a classic education. This was a false assumption. This is a woke school. It focuses on social justice, equity and race. It is all right there on their website. Hidden in plain sight. If you are looking for progressive activism, you will find it here. Equity - check. Critical race theory, yes. I am not exaggerating. In the middle of our son's school year we were emailed by the headmaster that a diversity, inclusion and equity consultant would be giving a talk to parents on zoom. And lo and behold if you look right on the school's website, there is a section on equity under "our advantage" heading. I called the headmaster to ask why a critical race theory specialist was speaking with parents and she tried to divert the purpose of the talk back to inclusivity which is a classic dodge. The curriculum is full of equity and activism. In fact the Capstone project for middle schoolers revolves around globalism and far left activist issues. If you want this for your child, great. Just know what you are getting into.

My child has been a student at St Annes for 3 years and I have been very pleased with the school. The teachers and staff seem to really care about the students and take a creative approach to teaching. The administration also is generally responsive to concerns. I would recommend based on my experience.

My child went to this school this past year and when parents ask me how I like the school I highly recommend they look elsewhere. We had heard things (even from several previous staff members) of the toxicity of the administration but I could not have fathomed what we experienced. Lets just say that my child was bullied, and it was swept under the rug time and time again. To not prioritize childrens mental health has detrimental consequences to self esteem. The administration favor the other admins children and behaviors are often times blamed/scolded on the children instead of teachers guiding their students to (healthy!) conflict resolution. Even though my child has been a victim of bullying - the school never even contacted the other parent to have a healthy and productive conversation (because it should start with teachers and parents). Its definitely a clicky / club where the families that are in you can tell are prioritized (donations, power). I was recently told by another parent that the staff seems miserable at drop off every morning. I couldnt agree more. The environment is toxic, the staff if you even use your voice as a parent will verbally attack you, stonewall you, become defensive, scolding, cold and eventually make you feel outcasted. Its happened several times personally at this school. To say youre a Christian school and the values you bring to work every day do not align with it has seeped into every corner of this school. I would never recommend to another family to send their children here.

I feel like the negative reviews I've read could have been written by my family. My child was bullied at this school and they did not do a thing to help him. We've had unbelievably unprofessional experiences with the administration. They are honestly just horrible. They've treated my children terribly to the point we are contacting lawyers. As a family that's moved around a bit and went to other private schools, I promise this one is awful. Your child would be safer and better cared for in a public school.

Agree with the last reviewer. Be careful with this school. The administration and many of the teachers are alarmingly inept and unresponsive and use disturbing methods of discipline in some cases. It is a small school. Bullying and cliques are a big problem among both students and parents. The curriculum leaves much to be desired - frankly I thought it was boring. Little to no challenge for children who may be a little ahead. The school really caters to the average child who fits their model, and I have witnessed them give up on children who do not.

My experiences here have been very complicated and difficult to talk about. I will not go into specifics of what I experienced but I will summarize my core issues. Bullies are rarely if ever given serious consequences. The worst I have seen is them making a child eat lunch alone. They will have meetings if you request them but very little will be done. Some teachers there are quite good but some are not. There have been teachers that would single out students and bully them. Much like with the other bullies at the school, very little was done and many of those teachers still teach there despite numerous complaints from parents and students. They also are not equipped for special needs students. I witnessed many disabled and neurotypical struggle to get the help they needed. Ableist attitudes were also fairly common among students and teachers. There is also favoritism shown to certain families and students, particularly students from wealthy families or families of teachers and administrators.
All in all most of the teachers are good people doing their best, it is an ineffective administration that is the core of these issues. They also have a strong science and math programs.

I cannot imagine a more ideal school. The only thing I would change if I could would be to have the school continue thru high school. The child-centered, socially-focused, project-based curriculum is FANTASTIC. The whole environment is used as aEarnong tool. The teachers are incredibly dedicated and PASSIONATE. Children are challenged and encouraged and daily see the relevance of their learning to the "real world." Children democratically choose the topics for projects, and then all subjects use this topic to deliver learning. Children are treated with respect. EVERY faculty member will know your child's name. Any specific challenges your child may face in either their academic or social skills is never treated as a problem but as an opportunity for the whole team (including parents and child) to work together for improvement. There is a joy in learning that is palpable. My child's only complaint is that he does not get to go to school on the weekends!! The entire community is strong, engaged, welcoming, and warm. If only I could have attended such a school myself I'm sure my own confidence as a citizen of the world, capable of conquering any challenge I face would have been so much greater. If this sounds like a commercial, I guess it is. I wish every child had such an outstanding opportunity to experience such joy and achievement at school.

My son started St. Anne s last year as a member of the kindergarten class, and he loves it! As an educator who works for a leading higher education association and regularly provides faculty development workshops across the country, I can say without reservation that the rigorous curriculum offered at St. Anne s is the foundation that all children should have to be successful in postsecondary education. My husband and I are proud that our son is a student at St. Anne s.

The August review is very out of sync with our experience and what I know to be the experience of others at St. Anne's. We have three children at St. Anne's; all have attended from the Two's program. We decided to stay with St. Anne's because of the wonderful balance of the academic and social curriculum. Academics are just top notch: project based, collaborative, but still tailored to each child's strengths. Our eldest is in first grade and he is thriving--takes risks, LOVES all subjects, including math and reading. He comes home asking to do research on topics, and if something comes up in family conversation, he already engages critically with it, exploring implications and challenging fallacious thinking. The social curriculum, though, is what really sets St. Anne's apart. The kids are learning to be kind, caring, thoughtful citizens of their communities (small or large), and I am continually struck by how good these little people are to each other. School is truly a safe place for my kids--safe for them to take challenges academically and safe for them to grow emotionally and socially. I couldn't recommend the school more.

St. Anne's School is such a wonderful school. Students learn how to be independent thinkers. The administrative staff and teachers give 110% effort and always express enthusiasm for learning. Students are taught to respect and appreciate the differences and uniqueness in each other. The school celebrates all types of diversity including beliefs and ideas. Everyone, students, parents, grandparents, and staff are welcomed into the St. Anne's community. Although the tuition is rather high, unlike other schools, St. Anne's is both striving and succeeding at substantially lower its tuition over the next few years in order to make the school available to more families.

Our son has been at St. Anne's School of Annapolis through preschool, pre-kindergarten and now kindergarten. We are extremely happy as is he with his time at St. Anne's. He has been challenged academically and has really learned the meaning of community and respect for others. Teachers and staff are always accessible and happy to answer any question I've had. The Parent's Association is very active and keeps parents engaged at all levels. We are extremely pleased and looking forward to sending our younger son to St. Anne's when he is old enough to attend!

The St. Anne's School is a private Episcopal school nestled in the comfortable cradle of Annapolis, MD. The rich history of the school boast an even richer diversity of staff, faculty, students and alumni that have created a very unique and special learning environment. There is a loving tradition of giving back and caring via service learning that students are enriched with and they carry this into larger community as lifelong learners and leaders.

I had four children attend St. Anne's School from the age of two until they graduated from 8th grade. I choose the school initially because it was an Episcopal school and I knew the fantastic reputation of Episcopal schools around the country. I was not disappointed. Every one of my children graduated with the knowledge and skill sets they needed to be successful in high school. More importantly, though, they graduated with the desire to be academically challenged and civically engaged. As a parent, I do not know how I could ask for more than to have my children's first school experience leave them with a hunger for learning and a thirst for making a difference in the world around them.

We couldn't be happier with St. Anne's! The responsive classroom approach is a great fit for our son. The teachers and staff are wonderful as are the St. Anne's community of parents. Our son is being challenged academically and socially.

I LOOOOOOOVE St. Anne's! I was looking at 2 other schools and ended up at St. Anne's and I'm so happy! Not only is the academic challenging but the feeling my son gets everyday from the staff there is priceless! As a parent I feel comfortable that when I drop off my son at school, that he will get the respect and love that he deserves! They are very informative and very accomodating to both the kids and their parents. Not only do I love the school but so does my son. And an 8 year old will tell me the truth. If you want a tight knit community and want your child to feel like he isn't just a number, please bring your child here. Everyone (staff, teachers, PARENTS) knows your name even though you met them once and maybe not at all! I'm still amazed by this...

St. Anne's School of Annapolis provides the rare combination of truly challenging academics in a rich social education program. They truly make every family member feel like they belong. It is a second home for my children. The graduates have an outstanding track record and alum parents are so proud of the school, saying their kids were far ahead of the game when they got to high school. The staff is extremely smart, knows the research--especially brain research--and care about the kids. If you are in Annapolis and have the privilege to attend a private school, look nowhere else. We looked everywhere, and St. Anne's is the best, hands down.
