This school has wonderful teachers and support staff (counselors, clinicians, transition specialists). They find the strengths of each student, their talents, and special interests, and work to cultivate these, while helping them to grow socially, emotionally, and academically. The encourage students to push beyond their comfort zone while providing safety and security. Indeede, the teachers and clinicians seem to have a calling to work with special populations. And the school has an inspiring vision -- small classes, individualized learning for each child, colorful murals, student art displayed everywhere, therapy dogs walk the halls. They put on several plays each year, offer performing arts, sports,, and garden clubs, field trips to natural areas, zoos, aquarisums, lots of career exploration activities and meaningful internships with community organizations. They'll find work/volunteer experiences that fit the profile of each high schooler and drive them to these. We feel so blessed that we were able to send our child to Harbour.

This is a great school! It is individualized learning so the kids go at their pace so that they actually learn the material. Student to teacher ratio is great and even better than that is that each classroom has 2 special education teachers in them so they can actually work with the student on all aspects of their development and learning! This is a all encompassing environment it is not just academic learning, they learn social skills and engagement with others as they accomplish their learning. This has been "built" especially for the needs of each child who has special needs. I worked to get my child in this school when I learned that AACPS would not actually teach my child and they were just moving them through the system. If you want your child to actually have a life and not be on some sort of social welfare system, this is a great school ! I have no idea where some of these reviewers are coming from unless they unable to understand the entire situation. I have never seen anything but the best and most "professional" people at the Annapolis school.

The only memories i have of this place are of being yelled at, and other students being yelled at, they taught me nothing the 3 years i was here, and if they did, it is all overshadowed by bad memories. I would NOT send your child here, im pretty sure i have PTSD from this school, and i am still getting memories of it almost daily 5 years later. This place needs to be investigated and shut down before they do this to another child.

This school has been a lifesaver for my child. The teachers are kind and caring and allow students to progress at their own pace. They find what the students enjoy and build motivation from that. All students have an individual learning plan. My child has been encouraged to accelerate in some subjects, is able to work ahead, while given extra support in subjects they find more challenging. High school students receive vocational training in areas of interest and are given internship opportunities. The school fosters creativity, and is visually appealing, with artwork evrywhere and a therapy dog that walks around. It is unique in so many ways.

I have had the privilege to be an employee of The Harbour School for almost 10 years now. My son has attended Harbour for 5 years as well. I have read the reviews and some of the comments are just completely untrue. Everyone is entitled to their opinions but stating those opinions as facts is just wrong on so many levels. Our staff are highly qualified educators, each of the lead teachers has Special Ed. certification, every staff member hired has a minimum of a bachelors degree and we provide a tuition free masters program for our staff so they can receive certification in special education and not have student loans to worry about. Yes, we do decorate our halls with murals, they are not meant to please our leader but to help influence our village curriculum, turning classrooms into working villages on Fridays. THS is also a hands-off school. We do not accept students with aggression. Harbour also has a wonderful transition program. Students start that program in middle school so by the time high school comes, they are ready for their job skills area to begin and start job shadowing, volunteering and eventually leave Harbour with a paid position. Personally, I am thankful that I was able to find Harbour, build my career, have a safe place for my son to attend school, received an excellent education, and make friends.

In retrospective, the school has helped me deal with my disability and accepted me for it unlike public schools I attended, some teachers were caring, some were not encouraging into pushing us into pursuing something they’re teaching, they just simply did. The homework wasn’t challenging or demanding enough to figure it out other than math. It was easy to figure it out. While they did have a job skills program to help us how to hold a job, they didn’t prepare us at all for college. We had to figure it out all on our own. After graduating, there are no reunions whatsoever. However, I found my love for theatre and acting there doing plays. They dislike gossip and vulgar language. Ultimately, without the harbour school, I would have finally graduate from there with the tools they gave but I don’t miss the school that much because of the administration and rules and regulations we had to endure

This school is not made for children who are very social and highly intelligent. The children here are disrespectful and mean. The staff constantly changes, making the curriculum change a lot, leaving you confused as where you are in it. Graduation is not defenite, which intimidates me as I cannot leave school until some time I don’t know

The director can’t take criticism or he will threaten with you getting kicked out. Bullying, swearing, and bad behavior is big here.

Some kids scream in the hallways and the teachers do nothing.

The school also feels cramped, making avoiding people who are mean impossible.

They are too busy making “No phone” rules than making kids learn.

Some effective faculty and staff, but they seem to be at a loss on consistent practices for addressing the unique needs of learners and consistency with Maryland core curriculum/graduation requirements and prerequisite skills for success in college and professional environments. Alarmingly high turnover rate for faculty and administration, and Director is, as stated in multiple other reviews, domineering, unapologetic, rude, and unprofessional. Although full spectrum of clinical services offered, not sure who actually is consistently receiving these services or who monitors consistency and efficacy of services.

I went to The Harbour School for 11 years. I had some great experiences, but the school had very low academic standards. Also not to mention a VERY abusive,mean spirited High School math teacher who told students"they will never be able to do fractions because they are learning disabled." The Harbour School though means well, they paint a very false picture of the real world. For example, they embody an everybody gets a trophy type mentality. With little to no chances to get into good colleges, I strongly recomend against sending your child to The Harbour School. The School also accepts behavior that is not acceptable for the work place and that is not appropriate to do as an adult. When I went to public school before harbour, I remember that if you wanted to get on Honor Roll, it just wasn't enough to show up. You actually had to complete the work, and if you had all As and Bs you got a reward, if you got one C you were left empty handed. Harbour also did have a sensory room , where you can go cool off and relax, It was nice but I don't believe thats a good way to show students what the real world is like.

After enduring the frustrations of a public school system that didn't have the resources to help my brother, my family was relieved to find The Harbour School in Annapolis. Because of its compelling, innovative, and individualized approach for students with learning differences, The Harbour School was the absolute best fit for my brother. We always have felt thankful for the wonderful educational experience my brother had at The Harbour School, as his self-confidence and self-esteem rose markedly. We were thrilled when he began to discover new interests through The Harbour School's outstanding extracurricular sports and arts programs; his participation in these activities further enhanced his social development. In addition to forming lasting friendships with fellow students, my brother also felt the daily compassion from Harbour s dedicated staff. Lastly, my brother drew inspiration from the enthusiasm for learning that the school's director, Dr. Linda Jacobs, always imparted to Harbour students. Moreover, my family felt reassured that someone with Dr. Jacobs' expertise and track record with special-needs education was at the helm during my brother's educational journey.

I relied on this website due to moving from out of town and am pleased with my area. The main reason I moved to this area was the excellent school district. I have been lucky enough to get to know students that go to this school and am so pleased on how they've developed over the years. Per the parents, the students receive an individualized education and the students I know that go their have flourish.

This school is full of inexperienced teachers at the lower levels, and burn-outs in the upper school, all who are terrified of the adminstrator, who is a controlling, personality-disordered individual whose sole purpose in life is to make money. She does this by firing those who have the most experience and who dare to tell her what is best for the students, and replacing them with pretty teachers who do not have degrees in education, who are fresh out of college, or teachers who bear more resemblence to Bob Cratchitt, keeping their mouths shut while they collect their measly pay. The self serving murals which she has paid several thousands of dollars for only serves to underline her narcissism, and flaunts the fact that she is more willing to spend tuition money on homages to herself than textbooks (of which there are NONE!) Although the school is on par with the public and other private schools, it certainly is not worth paying for. It is funny how the 5 star review here touts "parental involvement" when parents are not even allowed to volunteer during the school day! Sounds like lies to me! Don't be fooled by the pretty building, and the ipads.
