Cannot say enough great things about this school. They made my son feel emotionally secure, while also totally preparing him for Kindergarten. They also helped us potty train him! St. Matts is a special place, the 3 year old teacher having been there for several decades; she even taught the 2 year old teacher! The playground is safe, diverse and exciting, and the inside environment is full of engaging age-directed activity to nurture their development. We'll have lifelong friendships from St. Matts, and that can't be quantified by 5 stars alone. We're grateful to have found St. Matthews Parish Day School in Hyattsville.

St. Matt's is a decent school run by staff who genuinely care about kids. It is one of the only affordable schools in the area and offers before/after care, a highly sought after amenity. Children get a good mix of structured and unstructured activities throughout the day. My child has grown immensely, academically. St. Matt's has the potential to be an amazing school, but there are various factors keeping it from getting there. Overall, the school needs to move into 2014. Administratively, things are done in a very old fashioned way (only certain staff members even know how to use email). It seems that some staff may need to take some early childhood development classes or workshops to review best practices in working with (speaking to) children. There is also a tolerance for negative behaviors (bullying, name-calling, isolating, etc.) that will most certainly get these students into trouble when they enter public schools. I would also recommend training for staff members for these kinds of things.

My son has been attending the school for over one year now. He loves going to school and I feel very comfortable leaving him in the morning. The school has a great curriculum and he is being taught skills that he needs to learn before he starts elementary school. As an educator, I have been to many centers and I like St. Matthews. The facility may benefit from some cosmetic upgrades but it's something the PTO committee is working on along with the school. I recommend this school to other families.

I just started sending my daughter to St.Matthews this year after hearing rave reviews from some neighborhood families. We love the school! It was her first experience with school as she just turned 2. She cried for the first 10 days but thanks to the patience and loving care of the staff, she now runs into school and I can't get her to leave. The staff has been so welcoming! It is a wonderful, diverse place for my child to get ready for school!

This is our second month with the school and we couldn't be happier. Our 4 year old (in the PreK class) who is typically a very attached child had a great 1st day and asks us to go to school early every day. There is always something new to come home and tell our family about. The school has a good cultural mix with children from lots of different backgrounds. I would love to see them incorporate a Spanish Language enrichment class which they are working on. The school could use a few cosmetic upgrades and a few computers or a computer lab would be a wonderful addition. The Pre-K teacher has been wonderful -- our child is learning new and essential things and that is exactly what we were hoping for.

My child's teacher and aids appeared emotionally in capable to handle a room full of children and at other times just angry. It appeared that very little learning was taking place and a lot of draconian punishment was the norm. I'm a parent who believes that some times kids should do things they may not want, if it encourages a stronger educational or life principle. Unfortunately neither was being demonstrated and my kids were literally pleading every morning not to go. Good thing was after I pulled them out, I was able to get them to follow rules by threatening to take them, "back to St. Matthew." I'm someone who is always skeptical of very low, or very high ratings, so please investigate this institution closely (during class sessions) before enrolling your child. I guess places can change.
