Maya Angelou French Immersion IB World School is a great school that is always striving to be better. They were recently awarded the School of Excellence for 2023-2025, and they are truly working and living their plan for Family and Community Engagement. This school really listens to its parents and scholars and works hard to foster positive relationships with the teachers. When challenges or concerns are raised, you can feel confident that you will be heard and that your problems will be acknowledged and addressed. There is a family spirit here. Once an eagle, always an eagle! It's the MAFI Family! My son has learned a LOT since attending this school - he's a member of the Talented and Gifted program and has become more confident expressing himself respectfully, creatively, and with a broadened worldview. The opportunity to learn two languages is an incredible gift. The PTSA is absolutely wonderful - extremely engaged and encouraging and fun. The President and VP work so well together and are really professional and committed. The PTSA hosts awesome events for the students and the adults. They have a Hospitality Committee dedicated to supporting the adult engagement and making it a fun and connected experience. They have an Advocacy/Legislative Committee that is dedicated to advocating for Social Emotional Learning and Special Education best practices. They have a Programs and Events Committee that provides programming opportunities and events that are a hit with the school community. The newly formed Grants and Opportunities Committee has allowed for the school to host and provide so much MORE - we received a STEM+Families Grant last year that allowed us to host a Science Festival with interactive experiments and food/drinks for all attendees at no cost. The Membership, Women's Engagement and Men Make a Difference Committees are creative and committed to providing thoughtful and well-planned events. MAFI is always looking for ways to connect with their sister schools and local organizations.

I have two kids attend the school and it has been the best choice for us. We were initially weary because it was a French speaking school and our family did not speak the language but was a great experience learning a second language with my child and watching them learn and be challenged in a different way. The PTSA is top notch, very engaged in the betterment of the school & huge advocates for the students. One of the best schools on the area.

This school continues to get better and better every year. Very very active PTSA and committed and involved parents. This is our third year and i have nothing but great things to say. No school is perfect but we find comfort in knowing issues are not only heard but addressed in a timely manner. Major plus - Administive staff are very approachable. We have come across some amazing teachers who genuinely care about their students. In these times, love that the doors to the school remain locked and you have to be buzzed in by admin staff in order to enter.

We have been at MAFI for 3 years now and have had a wonderful experience- even through the ups and downs for PGCPS due to the pandemic. We are grateful for teachers and staff that show they care, know our family by face/ name, and continue to put the kids first. I am continually amazed at the enhancements immersion provides to our student’s education and world view. Everyone in the family- biggest to smallest- now knows a little French, we have a new way of relating and we are all better for it.

I have truly enjoyed the experience my family and I have had with MAFI. The teachers are great and are very knowledgeable. They not only speak the language but provide the students with the opportunity to thoroughly learn and live the culture through the assignments, engagements and overall learning experience. The administration (Principal and Vice Principal) are top notch. They are approachable, caring and truly want the students to succeed. They are amazing leaders to a great staff and lead with compassion.

The parents are great as well. We get to interact through a number of avenues and communication and information flows freely. There is no topic off limits for the parents and the open door policy with school leadership really makes this community feel like family. There is always someone there to answer a question, provide a suggestion, and/or lead you down the proper path. I am thankful for the experience my child and we as her parents will share during her time at this IB school. She is learning how to be a better member of her community both here at home and for her future abroad, should she decide to take that path.

IB Programming + French Immersion = Students Stretching and Soaring! This year has been really great for the 4th grade. These teachers are proactive resourceful and work closely together to support the students and each other. Great Teamwork! Also this is the year of more psychosocial development and responsibility where students are expected to own their education. Again can't say enough about how 4th grade teachers are pushing the students toward ownership and integrating IB programming very well. With IB programming, there is no departmentalization so the classroom teacher teaches all the subjects except English and Specials. Literature readings for both English and French are being executed. STEM education and field trips are more plentiful. Group projects and team work are also being done. Really awesome year of growth and integrity. Oh another FYI, our students will automatically place in the FI/IB program at Central if they stay until 8th grade. Not sure if I will keep my kids there but I certainly like this as an option for rigorous schooling. FI/IB program is a phenom in spite of the Central High School environment!

The teachers are great. Love the school. All three of my children have attended this program.

Posted: January 30, 2015

The faculty and PTSA are supportive and strong. The program offers students the opportunity to travel abroad. 5th and 6th graders travel to Canada. And 7th and 8th graders travel to Europe. Academically speaking the school is really strong in math. The Engligh Reading Language Arts (ELA) is not strong at all. In fact students tremendously lack in this area. Grammar and writing are the two biggest areas where kids here are deficient. Unfortunately it's not really until middle school when this really shows up. So the good - math, French. The bad - ELA and the behavior of some of the students at the school. Also the middle school is not strong. But that could be more a county curriculum issue.

My daughter is in kindergarten, and is doing well. I have no complaints. Her homework is challenging, and she is quite engaged. I thought I would be able to share her experience in learning Francais; however, she has already surpassed me. I'm excited about what's to come.

Great school. Great School Leadership. Excellent PTSA!!!! My kid is a 2nd grader (3rd year) at JHFI and I couldn't have made a better choice. His level of fluency in French at 7 is remarkable. Every year is better than the last. Keep up the good work JHFI family.

Wonderful School. My child is excelling. The curriculum is challenging and my daughter already has a working knowledge of the French language and she's only in the First grade.

Our school is an academic stronghold. We offer our children an immersion environment with excellent activities to enrich young lives. Our programs include dance, STEM club, robotics, Mandarin, Parent Empowerment and much more! If you are looking for a challenging school with great academics and after School activities, check out John Hansom French Immersion @ Shugart!

My school is awesome, active, alive and academically achieving! My 2nd grader is already quite proficient in not only math, science and reading, but becoming quite fluent in the French language. I would say that is a great achievement for a 7 year old! The school is supportive of the academic needs of the children, and strive to provide top-notch education to our children. In a county that has not always been at the top of the leader board in Maryland, this school sets a higher bar, and helps to launch the county and school system in Maryland forward. The school also has a very strong PTA, complete with very passionate and active parents. Collectively, with the school and PTA effort this truly is a family and community spirited school, complete with a common set of core value to promote excellence in our students and school system.

John Hanson is an awesome school where students are getting fully immersed in a second language for no extra cost! I have two children currently in attendance due to the much appreciated automatic sibling enrollment policy! If you decide to let your kids attend know that your involvement is paramount to your child's success and no English is taught until the 2nd grade. The only improvements I would like to see is for the program to be expanded with more teachers so that the class sizes can be smaller for the younger grades and extended to the 12th grade onsite.

I love the opportunities that this school presents to our youth. Language immersion offers a great advantage to students in the greater DC area for job prospects in the future. The staff is very committed and stays after to help students. They tailor the instruction to meet the needs of the students.

This is a great school. My daughter is in the Second great and academically she's doing very well. I must say the program is very rigorous so if you want to send your child to this school make sure that you have the time to be involved in his or her education. The principal strives for excellence. She is very much liked and respected by the rest of the staff. I am hoping that when my son is old enough I can send him there as well.
