City Neighbors Charter School has been an incredible experience for our family, even before my daughter officially started. From the lottery process onward, the school has maintained clear, consistent, and thoughtful communication. At every step, I felt informed, supported, and genuinely welcomed into the community.

Now that my daughter is in kindergarten, that level of communication and care has only deepened. City Neighbors truly treats learning as a partnership between the school and families. I always know what’s happening with my daughter’s education, what she’s working on, and how I can support her growth at home. Teachers and staff are accessible, responsive, and intentional about keeping parents involved in the learning process.

It’s clear that City Neighbors values not just academic success, but collaboration, transparency, and building strong relationships with families. As a parent, that gives me so much confidence and peace of mind. I’m grateful my daughter is learning in an environment where education is shared, supported, and celebrated together.

Over the years my experience at this school has been splendid. My son has a learning disability and he has always been supported and included in all ways at this school. My other children are in classes with children with disabilities and you can't tell who does or doesn't have one because everyone is included. The teaching staff is highly dedicated to all students regardless of race or background. The teachers are there for many many after school and weekend activities and they make you feel welcomed as a family. Testing scores don't tell you everything about a school.

This school is truly unique within Baltimore City public schools. The curriculum is arts-integrated and project based. So what does that mean? I've seen kids creating dances to represent geometric principals. I've seen kids using math and working together to figure out if Double Stuff Oreos truly have double stuffing inside. I've seen middle school students walk 2 miles carrying 2 gallons of water each as a part of unit on water sources in Africa. The list of unique and inspiring ways that kids are learning goes on and on, but that's not the only reason we love the school.

CNCS's motto is "Known, Loved, and Inspired" and over the years it has become increasingly evident that the staff and administration take this mission seriously. The new principal (this is her first year after previously being the school reading specialist and the parent of 4 CNCS students) truly brings this home. She knows each child's name. She knows the names of parents. She greets everyone in the morning and bids us goodbye at the end of the day. Parents are ALWAYS welcome in the building.

The school asks parents to contribute 40 hours of service each year, which really isn't hard to do, as parent-teacher conferences and other outings count as part of this. But these 40 hours help to create a very tight-knit community.

The new principal is very committed to supporting students of all learning abilities.

The CNCS community suffered a terrible tragedy this week with the death of two of our students in a house fire. The leaders of the school immediately responded with an action plan, by bringing in a team grief counselors, offering support to families and handling an unthinkable situation with tremendous grace and sensitivity.

I haven't seen report cards from other schools, but CNCS report cards put a high value on cooperation and respect for others.

They are dedicated, effective and personable. Strong administration.

Posted: January 8, 2017

Students are engaged throughout the day. Their homework, particularly in the earlier grades, is about sharing their learning and you hear it ALL the time. Homework is not a primary methodology but they are prepared!

This school takes the time to learn the students as people and learners. It is teaching them to be global citizens. They offer a variety of classes, and learning approaches that every student feels successful as soon as they walk through the door. We love this school!
