We've been a part of AACS for 5 years and are leaving. The quality has gone downhill since the new superintendent came on board. He's made one bad decision after another and my kids'grades are suffering as a result of poor leadership.

This school is an amazing school! The teachers are amazing people and teachers, the students are super welcoming and being the new kid here is pretty easy. The teacher genuinely care about the subject they teach and the students they teach.

The school leaders promotes ostracism. And unfortunately, the students do the same. Jesus, promotes love, compassion, forgiveness, and humility. You will find that anywhere, but in the school.

Not happy with this school. The kids are angry and toxic and leadership is weak. The teachers are angry about their low pay. The kids have an absurd amount of homework yet little learning in class. Not going back next year.

Over The last four years, I've had the opportunity of watching a truly wonderful school fall from grace. In my freshman year, the school had so much life. There were legendary and respected teachers who loved their jobs and cared for students. The sharp contrast between the school I attended then and the 2021-2022 school year is clear. This year has undoubtedly been one of the worst in the school's recent history.

Here are some reasons why.

The Bible Department
Bible classes are what set AACS apart from its non-religious counterparts. From my experience, The AACS Bible teachers have done an amazing job of making the topic engaging and informative. These teachers have built their curriculum from the ground up to talk about today's most relevant issues. Classes made a point of having frequent discussions where questions were encouraged. This has been replaced by a book curriculum which is uninteresting from a student's perspective and limiting from a faculty perspective. The new curriculum does not approach topics with the nuance of classroom discussion.

Faculty Shortage
There are some truly wonderful teachers at AACS. That being said, it doesn't matter how great a teacher is if their workload is overbearing. Some teach as many as six courses at once. While the current lack of staff is undesirable as is, multiple beloved faculty (some of which have been at the school longer than I've been alive) have announced their resignation, and will not be returning next year.

Administration
If you're reading this I’d imagine you've seen some of the other reviews talking about the administration. If you haven't, try filtering by one star. The most recent and noticeable change in the administration has been the new principal. While not the only problem, they are certainly a large part of it. It is fair to say the Principal has not earned the respect of the majority of students or faculty. Polices have been created for which there are no reasons given. Asking for a reason is met with a “because I said so''. It is a rare occasion for the principal to speak directly to the student body in an assembly or chapel. There are rumors of less than pleasant faculty interactions with this individual. Hearing about the resignation of multiple faculty who have been staples in the community makes one think the rumors are not baseless. Overall, the administration lacks the clarity one might desire in entrusting thousands of dollars, and more importantly their child’s education too.

I’m a current student. The new principal does not respect students and staff yet expects us to respect her. The staff is tired of the condescension, disrespect, and demands. Why do you think so many are leaving?

The new principal is a horrible fit for the school and demands respects from students and staff but doesn’t respect us. Teachers are subject to her whims. Why do you think so many are leaving?

I agree about not gossiping as stated in a previous review. The Principal recently stopped my daughter in the hall and said her skirt was too short and that it would make boys stumble. My daughter apologized and the Principal said it won’t be a problem next year because the school will be switching to long pleated skirts. Where do I buy those?

Just found out that next year the AACS superintendent will be running the school (located in Maryland) from his home out west. Who thought this was a good idea? Are my tuition dollars being used to pay for this ridiculous plan? And the justification given for the decision is that he is taking a pay cut? Paying less for a bad deal doesn’t suddenly make it a good one. A once great school has been brought low by bad leadership, poor decisions, pride, and plain old foolishness. And you wonder why my kid isn’t coming back next year. Sad!

Clearly things need to change at AACS because those who are writing here as Alumni are spreading gossip which is antithetical to the NT witness. Praise God for a new Principal who is biblically grounded and who will bring truth to a generation desperate for hope, and something greater than what the world promises — and delivers.

How many more upper school faculty have to announce they are leaving before we admit what we all know: leadership has failed this community.

As an alum of AACS, I am deeply concerned by what is transpiring at the upper school. Two long-serving and highly respected members of the leadership team announced they are leaving at the end of the school year and numerous faculty members are also planning to leave. Turnover is inevitable in any organization, but the pace and number of departures is alarming. What is clear is that the root cause of this mass exodus is a fundamental breakdown in leadership. It is an open secret that the superintendent and principal have created a workplace environment where faculty are routinely bullied and scapegoated. I’ve discussed this with several board members who say they are aware of this behavior, but who give essentially the same response – their hands are tied and the superintendent calls the shots. It is becoming evident that without new leadership, this upper school will not survive. If you are an alum of this school and care if the doors remain open, now is the time to contact board members and demand not only answers, but action. I’ve spoken with numerous other alumni who are equally upset at the treatment of teachers/leaders who’ve had a profound impact on their lives. I currently have one child attending the high school and do my best to ignore the rumor mill. However, there is chatter among the students that the principal went to the school’s recent Christmas concert, while knowingly being required to quarantine as a close contact for COVID. She was so enamored with the concert that she hastily called for a repeat performance the following week where all students and faculty were packed into the auditorium for almost 2 hours. If true, this is extraordinarily poor judgment by the principal and calls into question her ability to carry out a primary job responsibility, which is to protect the health and safety of students. I have reached out to the school for answers but haven’t heard back.

It has been said that a fish rots from the head down. The superintendent hired his friend as the new AACS high school principal earlier this year, in spite of serious concerns raised by several interview panels regarding the then-candidate’s leadership style and philosophy. What the new principal lacks in leadership, is more than made up for in passive-aggressive, condescending words and actions, primarily directed at faculty and staff. The same faculty and staff who kept the school running last year by simultaneously teaching in-person and virtually, while wearing a mask, during a pandemic. Meanwhile, the Board sits idly by, polite caretakers of a high school with plummeting enrollment and evaporating teacher morale – perhaps one day they will wonder what has gone wrong. Leadership has gone wrong and it’s really starting to stink.

AACS is a place that majors in the majors and does most things exceptionally well. More uniqueness in the schedule and more times during the school day for emotional and social learning could be created, but the teachers and administrators love their jobs and are serious about learning.

We were away from AACS for 3 years and now have moved back. The high school teachers are amazing...so helpful and go above and beyond to help their students succeed. The sports teams have been so great for my kids as well and we are so happy to be back. I highly recommend this school to ALL.

Two of my children have graduated from AACS and I currently have two in the Upper School. Each of my four children has different interests, talents, and personalities, yet AACS has served each of them excellently. From music, to science, to sports, to language arts, they've each excelled here. The faculty have had a tremendous impact on my children and I love that they've each grown in so many ways. Character and academics are both important at AACS. Best of all they have each learned how to live their faith. Our experience has been priceless.

My three kids attended this high school and I could not be happier. The teachers and administration genuinely love and pray for the students. As for the challenging education, there probably is not a better school in this county. If you want your child to go to a school that is truly teaching a Christian worldview throughout the entire curriculum then this is the one for you. Great athletics, performing and visual arts and a top-notch marching band are all available.
