For a moment I hesitated about leaving a review but this sat on my heart...leaving this review could possibly save another family from going threw what my family went threw.I want to start off and say that MR has a Great academic program one of the best in the city. My son is a straight A . My son was accepted in the ingenuity as well as the honor program we decided to go with the honor program just because we didn't want to put too much stress on him little did I know going to MR was going to be stressful entering the main office nothing but rudeness to the principle and assisted principle counselor some teachers not all was the worst, from the bullying to my child wanting to change his appearance to a kid offering my son drugs to a student telling my son that they're going bring a switch to school because they see their oops mind you this is sixth grade talking to the counselor wasn't any better. She told me that no matter if I take my son out of MR or not that all Baltimore city schools are like this. My son would come home crying and upset.I understand that in schools you're going to hit bumps in the road, but not hitting potholes every day mind you we live in Baltimore we know what potholes can do to your car and that is exactly what MR did to my son he would come home and tell me how the principal talk to all the sixth grade and told the students that their given MR a bad reputation, I spoke with the principal,he told me that this has been a very hard year for MR they can't pick and choose who comes to the school I was so upset with myself because I had such high hopes for MR. I have 3 other children and all of them graduated from amazing schools, and I thought that we will have MR under our belt as well, this year has truly been a nightmare. I am the type of parent that when I was called about my child and he did something he had consequences for his actions as parents we have to teach them. That it will always be consequences for your actions and that's where I feel majority of the problem comes from the kids had no consequences...Baltimore city window of transferring is from July 6 to July 29. It's not too late if you chose MR for your child, please do your research I can't speak on the elementary part, but I can speak on the middle.I pray they get the right administration inside the school to bring back the way it was again academically wise I had no complaints mentally and emotionally. It weighed heavy on my family.

I love the neighborhood involvement and the dedication of the principal, staff, and teachers. We have had a great experience at Mt. Royal. My Middle schooler moved here from another state and instantly found his place there.

Love, love, love Mt. Royal! Great faculty, facility, families!

The city provides the resources, families and PTO are engaged! Faculty work hard to provide an excellent atmosphere for enrichment. There's room for improvement (like with most things), but the quality of instruction is as good here as any charter or private school.

Mount Royal is our family's school of choice for our daughter. The Principal, Vice Principals, Special Educators, Staff, Teachers, and PTO all clearly have a unifying focus on meeting student needs. As a parent, I feel fortunate to have such a strong community school for my daughter through 8th grade.

This school has turned around in a big way in the past few years under Principal Grotsky! It's now a sought-after destination for committed teachers and staff, neighborhood families, and families from across the city - and neighbors' perceptions are catching up to the new normal. My kindergartner has especially loved the gifted enrichment program (one of a handful in the city), the terrific music class, the after-school French and chess clubs, and the incredible Coach Rosie. Wish you could have heard & seen middle school singers & dancers performing "Glory" last month, or at the science fair the following week. A big and growing group of energized parents are active volunteers, working on areas of improvement, and volunteers from MICA and local church groups add to the rich mix. Mt. Royal and Mr. Grotsky have a truly open-door policy: stop by and visit for yourself!

My experience with Mt Royal Elementary has been overwhelmingly positive. Every staff member with whom I have interacted has been helpful and committed to providing a great learning experience. This attitude flows directly from the top- Mr. Grotsky brings passion, dedication, and an abundance of energy to his job and it shows.
My daughter has been treated as an individual with her own learning strengths and needs which have been addressed in a number of ways. The gifted program has provided additional learning opportunities beyond the regular classroom experience, and this has made a world of difference. Additionally, she has been given the opportunity to do her reading work with the class above hers which has further enhanced what was already a strength of hers.
Additionally, although they are not mentioned here as yet, Mt. Royal provides numerous after school clubs. My daughter participates in the French, Italian, and chess clubs so far and will explore others next year.

My son is the only Caucasian in a class of almost 28 students and I think he has g neurally been treated very well by his fellow students.

Posted: April 15, 2016

My child attends this school in K-5 which has a wonderful teaching staff and even a unique gifted and talented program for these grade levels. At grade 5, he will be eligible for the Ingenuity program. The Principal is fantastic and friendly, and dedicated to the arts. My son has been able to participate in after school clubs such as Chess, French, Italian, STEM, and even Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth in Astronomy. It's a great public neighborhood school with a strong and dedicated PTO

Posted: April 14, 2016

The teachers are very caring and very involved with students and the PTO. Many of them participate in after school clubs and theme nights.

Posted: April 14, 2016

As a kindergartner the amount of homework really should depend on the child. One Sheet s night is not overwhelming to some and to others it seems more like first grade.

Posted: April 14, 2016

The school and the principle care about the students and the community and expect their students to look out for the community.

Posted: April 14, 2016

This is a great neighborhood school. The teachers and staff are kind an compassionate with the kids. There are lots of fun extra curricular after school programs for the kids and families. It has a great principle who really care about each kid.

Posted: March 9, 2016

Teachers have been status quo and sometimes offensive in their assumptions and leadership of students.

Posted: November 2, 2014

this is an AWESOME school my kids learned so much since the old principal left. The new principal Mr.Grotsky is amazing. You can see the change.

Posted: August 26, 2014

The new principal is AMAZING and has already made so many great changes. The school has top notch academic programs (Ingenuity and Advanced Academics), as well as a new gifted and talented program for the elementary school. But it is also an Arts Integration school, with a new focus on providing music and art instruction that will make kids competitive for BSA.

this school is a very great school. the teachers there are pheonomanal when they teach. this school is wonderful

My school is great I love it. When you really get to know the students they are really great!!!!:-)

My oldest children started Mt royal in the 5th and 6 grade and had problems keeping up with the work but the school provided them the help they needed and the both became very good students my last child started at mt royal from k-grade and left in the 8th to attend poly I thank mt royal for that I didn't agree with every teacher or staff but they gave all my kids the tools they needed to be great students. I plan to send my grandkids to mt royal

Posted: May 28, 2013

This school is awful. Do not send your child to this school even for the advanced programs. Only a few teachers like the children and the rest just come for paychecks. The principal spends all day hiding in her office including when a fight is taking place on the playground after school. If this is your zoned school ask for a transfer.

Posted: April 7, 2013

This school is awful. The ingenuity and advanced academics programs do not make it better. It just places unsuspecting intelligent and respectful kids in the middle of a dirty, unorganized mess where there are fights on the playground once a week.. Do not choose this school for any reason.

i think this school is great but i think that it should have a better watch i got choked and got my head slammed into a locker by a boy and im a girl i dont fight but this school is great but b4 sending your child there get them into a karate class i dont feel the same after this im now paranoid... think 2 b4 sending ur child here

I was the class of 2010 and i personally give the school more thumbs down than the amount of thumbs if each person in the world put their thumb down. This school was unorganized and dirty. only reason i give it 2 stars is because they had some good teachers. In my opinion those selected few of teacher could do way better than Mt.Royal.

Posted: July 15, 2012

the quality of this school has decreased over the last three years. i am disappointed at the steff especially the first grade teachers. they don't have any patience with the children. the behavior of some students are out of control. they are quick to suspend but don't provide the help the child really need.

Posted: March 31, 2011

even though i dont enjoy how the school does things, i have to admit its accually ok. the teachers are nice and the school is strict.

Posted: November 16, 2010

As a former student , class of 08 i give this school a tumbs down they dont put education first they worrry about behavior & other irrelevant things ! i would never reccomend this school , first & foremost the administrators are rude 7 mean , such as mrs.Glascoe , Mrs.Byers, Officer Coarse , etc . . yeah all of them .

Posted: August 22, 2010

This is a excellent School my child gets extra help, attention, and enjoy going to school. the school has very high standards . I really enjoy my daughter going here! The students do their work quietly and i really love the schools staff!

Posted: April 1, 2010

My child was a student at Mt. Royal for 1 year. She entered as an ingenuity student. I was extremely irritated by the attitude if the administrators. They were rude and downright cold. The learning environment could have been more effective if the teachers were more experienced and if the daily class disruptions could have been eliminated. I would suggest any potential parent to make a surprise visit to the school and you will see what I mean. Thank God for private schools!
