I went to Thomas Johnson for ten years, from Pre-K to 8th grade, and I hated my experience there!

Posted: November 25, 2019

I don't really have an recollection about the homework, but I remember that this one teacher was cruel about it.

Posted: November 25, 2019

This school was a hostile environment, everyone was almost always angry with each other. It was rare for teachers not to scream at students down there. Granted, students misbehaved at Thomas Johnson, I will not deny that. But even when students didn't misbehave, teachers still got angry. I remember that the Principal entered my classroom, and the teacher decided to throw a student under the bus just to make himself look good in front of the Principal. And this was one of the better teachers. The school felt like a military academy, we weren't allow to speak when changing classes and we'd even get punished for talking in class. And I remember that an entire class would get punished, even though it was just a few students.

Every teacher my daughter has had from K-5th has been very strong. Teachers always go the extra mile.

Kids are encouraged to respect each other and to report bullying.

I have raised children and grandchildren and this is the worse school I have ever encountered.

Posted: January 10, 2017

They have discussions and lessons on Anti-bullying. They have multiple counselors in different types of mediation for these situations. If a child is being bullied, the notify both parents immediately.

Posted: January 10, 2017

There are multiple programs and classes to accommodate children with any type of learning disability. The child's teacher usually talks with the parents and tries to come up with a strategy to help the child learn in a more efficient way. If that doesn't seem to work they have special teachers there to work with the kids 1 on 1, as well as after school tutoring. I know this because I went through it with my son and they really made my son feel comfortable about his learning differences.

This school runs like a highly train and experience pit crew. The type of leadership that this school has is such a positive influence on our kids. The Principal and other school leaders interact with the students daily. Very rare will you see a school leader at their desk.

Posted: January 10, 2017

The amount of teachers that stay long hours after the dismissal bell has rung, just to volunteer for all the different clubs, activities and tutoring services for the students, just shows how dedicated and compassionate these teachers are. The teachers send home a communicator folder every night, even if there is nothing to relay to the parent. These teachers are extremely diligent about responding to any letters, emails or phone calls they receive from the parents.

Posted: January 10, 2017

The amount of compassion that is thought excels my expectations. The teachers portray the amount of compassion through their dedication to the students, which reflex onto the students. They talk to the students on the students level. They never talk down to the students, as to intimate them. The entire school makes a point to acknowledge any student or students who show integrity, respect and kindness to the staff as well as there classmates. The school offers a variety of incentives for the students portray these values.

They offer after school computer labs, for those students that do not have a home computer, or are having difficulties with using one. They also have after school Library hours for students to get their homework completed, or if they need help with it and they do not have a family member to help them. The teachers are so willing to sit down with the parents to come up with a game plan to on what is the best approach for helping the kids, not only to learn, but to actually understand and fully comprehend the curriculum. I know this for a fact, because the teachers and I had to do that with my son.

Posted: January 10, 2017

The teachers and staff are always going above and beyond for the students. This school offers numerous clubs and activities for the students, as well a variety of after school tutoring services. This school even offers an after school computer lab for students that do not have a home computer. All the after school clubs, activities and compute labs are all headed by the teachers at this school, who are volunteering their time for our kids. My children and I are highly grateful for this school, because they have countless family activities, such as family bingo nights, family math nights, fall festival, Winter Festival, spring festival, and even family dinner nights. I could not have asked for a better school for my children and I . My biggest fear is when my daughter goes to hight school, and I will not be able to find one that is such a warm, caring and compassionate school as Thomas Johnson Elementary/Middle School.

We've been very happy at TJEMS. Oldest now in second grade and youngest starting pre-k this year. Great city school in South Baltimore.

Posted: April 28, 2014

School is run well. Children are happy here. Teachers are good role models and good teachers. The Spring Festival was really great. Thanks to Mrs. Raina Somogyi for all of her hard work in organizing it. The children had a lot of fun....We can't wait for this years Spring Festival!!

The staff and teachers keep Parents informed of projects, events and the academic achievements of the students.

I love this school and whoever that parent was that said advoid at all cost was not right. What was said was very wrong.

Great Grandparents' Day. Teachers were lively and engaging. Three year old class had an awesome Mayflower re-enactment. Their word of the day was nocturnal. You should have seen all the little hands waving to define the word, wow. Pre-k were into math working on patterns. You should see the lovely new library. Just goes to show that the key to good public education is strong leadership, the principal, and caring teachers. With all the talk of under performing schools in Baltimore this school should be touted. The principal is still relatively new but the changes he has made are dramatic.

TJEMS has been by far the best move I have made for my son as a parent. My son was in the title I program 2 yrs ago to which I was given an option of schools for him to transfer to. Even though Thomas Johnson was not my first choice the school picked him up and I am truly grateful that they did. Since he has been at TJ he has been on the honor roll since he started in the 2nd grade and still is continuing into the 4th grade. The teachers are caring and loving to every student. My son love the ground Ms. Grinath walks on and he is not even in her class anymore. I dont care where I live in baltimore I will travel to make sure my son is in school everyday. Thank you Thomas Johnson Principle Dendinger, teachers, and staff for all you have done doing and continue to do to make sure each student get the proper education they need.

Great little school in the neighborhood, teachers are friendly, enthusiastic, and intelligent. The principal and vice principal are spectacular. Love that my kids are able to attend here.

This is an amazing public school in the city! The principal & staff are enthusiastic about the the education of our children and the parent involvement/PTO is huge support to the school.

Posted: August 6, 2013

Both the administrative and teaching staff are fantastic here at TJEMS. I was a student myself and am so happy the school has maintained the high standard of excellence. The office staff is always helpful and friendly, and I have never had a negative experience.

They have the best principal. The teachers are amazing and the parents are very involved.

Three years ago my husband, son (then 3 yrs old) and I moved to Baltimore so that I could finish grad school. We had no intention of making the city our permanent home primarily because we THOUGHT there weren t any good public school options. That changed after I visited TJ s open house. My son is going to 1st grade this year and we re amazed at how much he s already learned in Pre-K and K. The building is in good shape; the new state of the art library is remarkable; the teachers genuinely care about the students; the staff is friendly & easy to work with; and the PTO involvement is amazing. Before one of the reasons I refused to think of staying in the city was the reputation of city schools; now TJEMS is one of the reasons I can t think about leaving. Thomas Johnson is truly a gem and I can t express enough how pleased both my husband and I are.

this scholl has gone thru a major transformation since principal Dendinger set foot 5 or so years ago. My daughter is going into 2nd grade and is excited to start school already. The teachers from PreK to 1st grade are exceptional and I have heard thet 2nd grade teachers continue on the same path. We have had the chance to go to other schools but we will be staying her.

I have been thrilled with this school so far after one year's experience. Excellent teachers, a principal who is a real leader, beautiful new library, and a terrific and affordable after-school program available. And the best result of the year: a child who has clearly learned a lot. I would move or pay a lot for my child's education if I thought it was necessary, and kind of expected to-- I was so happy to find out that not only is it not necessary, it would be silly to give this up. Hopes for the future are that the music program is expanded and diversified.

Innovative elementary programming. New state of the art library facility. Active PTO. Green school rating.

Teaching in a school in the county for years, I was timid about sending my kids to a Baltimore City public school. Some of the things I had heard (or was it just that I perceived) made me think twice about sending my kids to a city school. After visiting the school with my daughter, and speaking with administration, we started to feel very comfortable with the school - we made the decision to attend TJEMS. My daughter is now entering 4th grade and my son is entering 2nd grade. We have become a part of the TJ family and have really connected with the teachers and staff here. We are pleased with the programming and quality of education that our kids are receiving. We feel fortunate to have this gem of a school in our own neighborhood.

We love this school. Great teachers, a great principal, and a great sense of community!

TJEMS is a great school, with terrific teachers and staff, students are able to get a great education in a safe environment with teachers that care and do all they can to ensure success. One of the top performing schools on the Peninsula I would recommend TJ to any parent looking for placement for their child.

Thomas Johnson has an amazing early childhood program, Discover with Me, for 3 year olds. My daughter started after just turning 3 and before she turned 4 she was able to identify every letter, its sound, started blending letters, decoding words and has built a substantial sight vocabulary. In addition to this there was a huge shift in her level of independence while playing and working in large part due to the Montessori influence in the classroom. The teachers at TJEMS are highly effective, dedicated and hardworking. I am so happy that my child has such a wonderful option right here in the city!

We have had the best experience at Thomas Johnson over the past 2 years. Our son has thrived in compassionate classrooms for both kindergarten and first grade, and is heading off to 2nd with advanced skills in reading, science, and math. He's been encouraged to be creative and be himself, and the education he gets is top notch. When we moved to Baltimore 3 years ago, we never dreamed that we'd be able to enroll him in the neighborhood's public schools. I've been beyond impressed and am grateful for the teachers, administration, and wonderful parents who help make it a great place to learn. Keep up the great work!

With having a child in the middle school and a child in elementary I can tell you the education they are receiving is wonderful. My children feel safe and the teachers truly care about the students whether they are in there class or not. We came from another school in the same district and it was a great move.

Last year was our daughter's first year at this school and we couldn't be more pleased with how the year went. The teachers were great, very easy to communicate with, open to new ideas and flexible while still sticking to the curriculum. The principal, is a no-nonsense kind of person and runs a pretty "tight ship" but is also willing to listen to new ideas and make improvements. The entire staff care about the students and you can tell the teachers genuinely love their jobs. The PTO is growing and is excited to continue to make improvements at the school. The over-all atmosphere is one of enthusiasm and excitement for the kids and for learning. This is a great school and we're so happy to be a part of something with momentum, where the kids are safe, cared for and the environment for learning keeps improving!

My son just completed his first year at public school (Pre-K). While the year was a bit of a review for him, the teachers and staff did a lot to keep him encouraged and learning new things. Today is his last day of school and he is sad, not because he'll miss his friends but because he's going to miss his teachers. That, to me, speaks volumes about the instruction being given. We're looking forward to Kindergarten at TJEMS.

My son attends Thomas Johnson, and I have come to your school plenty of times to bring him to school, or to pick him up. As a young father, Im very pleased with the care and concern for my son, who is Autistic. His teachers take notice of my son, and made me aware of things they dont feel comfortable about with my son, and the treatment, or care his mother provides for him, and this only proves to me that the job, the hold is more than a job, its a passion, and they take pride in protecting, as well as educating these lil angels that we put in their hads everyday. Im so greatful to you, and the staff at Thomas Johnson. (Especially Mrs. Smith), thank you sincerely.
