There are way too many students and not enough staff. The learning is dominated by the need for redirection and it truly holds back students from learning properly.

I dont know much abt this school, Now im in Middle school but didnt go here. This place looks similar to Relay Elementary School. Which was where i was told to go. This is a crazy thing and i think this school was better than Relay Hahaha.

Weve been here for 4 years and we love the teaching staff! They make the school amazing!

There are great activities throughout the year planned by the PTA.

My son has had excellent teachers for K-2. Hes starting his 3rd grade year. Weve been happy with his educational experiences. The PTA is active and they help plan additional social activities for families.

We have been thrilled with this school in general, and have been really happy with the special education services our son receives. Our son has attended for 3 years and loves this school. Hes never had a bad teacher, they have all been lovely and helpful every step of the way.

this is not a good school. i went there for five years. children constantly get into fights. the kids always complain about the teachers and its for a good reason. they have favorites and the substitues are terrible. i they kept saying soil like soul and when i tried to the correct them the they said its soul not soil. theu have bad taste on who should be a teacher. only one special needs class.

My child began attending Westowne in Kindergarten and is now in the first grade. The teachers and staff have been helpful and gone above and beyond. They have alot of resources for children who need more emotional support. Through this pandemic, they have been proactive in their communications. The teachers work hard to ensure that the children are engage during virtual instruction.

As a mother of two kids currently in this school, I would encourage the school to work harder on getting the overall academic performance and Test scores to a very high level.

Poor Test scores and Academic performance is hurting the school rating despite all the good things about the school.

Number of students to a teacher is too high and this as to be addressed as it does have direct impact on students performance.

Overall, Westowne Elementary is a good school in a great location with very helpful teachers and staffs.

I would recommend this school to all incoming parents. I think the school is based in reality, diversity, and overall doing what is best for the kids.

My daughter just finished 2nd grade and homework in K-2 has been "optional," but teachers have provided additional work as reinforcement. It was a great balance to keep up their skills.

All teachers, homeroom and specials, are available for chats or discussion. I have been able to reach everyone through learning apps or email. They definitely get to know your kids and are willing to help.

Yes, the school promotes good behavior, discusses tough social issues, and tries to get everyone involved. I am impressed how everyone "tries" to do right by the kids.

I don't have first hand experience with the admin, but I am impressed with their continued communication to the parents. PTA is very strong at this school as well and plan multiple extra-curricular nights for the kids. The school has a lot of community involvement.

Westowne Elementary school has been especially great with supporting my child through the pandemic with resources and plenty of communication. Before the virtual learning, the school offered a variety of experiences and opportunities for students to learn and grow.

There are numerous characters building activities including houses , owl eggs growth , and its in the curriculum. In fact my child knew so much about kindness and respect he sat younger relatives down and taught them .

I rate Westowne a 10. My son loves this school and so do I. I appreciate them taking the steps to help my son learn more. I love that they communicate well and use all resources to help children with learning disabilities and behavioral issues.

My son has a neurological condition that most people have never heard of. Our school worked hard with us to help put appropriate supports in place so he can be successful. I was so nervous going in for an IEP meeting for the first time but the team really put me at ease and we all worked together as a team to develop a plan to help my son be successful in class. The team at Westowne could not have been more wonderful to work with.

Research shows that homework for this age range isnt appropriate and does not improve mastery. This school follows evidence based research when it comes to homework and thus homework is optional. However if you dont like research and want homework- talk you your childs teacher- theyll send work home.

I cant say enough good things. I would like to make a note about test scores. This school is extremely diverse racially, economically and by country of national origin. It is like a little United Nations here. We have a lot of English language learners at this school and they are wonderful. But- the test scores might not be as high as in nearby schools as the children take a little longer to acclimate to an English speaking environment. But mark my words these are intelligent children whose parents really care about their education. Once their language mastery increases this schools test scores are going to shoot through the roof. Sometimes test scores are a good indication of education quality, but other times they arent. This is one school where the test scores arent an accurate reflection of the quality of the school.

We lasted two years at the school before we had to switch our child to another school where we met multiple other families who all would rather pay then send their children to Westowne. There is zero advanced programs for kids in K + 1st grade so the kids are expected to sit around quietly and wait until all the other classmates catch up to them before advancing them. Programs that they do well like their drama program they just drop because 1 teacher leaves. Education seems like it is not super important to the leadership.

We were only at this school for 2 years as we gave up on it and sent our child to private school. The first 2 years the teachers were not super motivated to know our child as they were not behind so they were left to spend on their kids who were behind. Maybe other teachers are more effective.

I was told years ago the school had great leadership and had great test scores, with the new leadership every year the school goes down in ranking.

Starting from my son's first year here, in 2nd grade going all the way to 5th grade, bullying and harassment here has been a problem day in and day out. I don't know what is going on but it seems the kids here are aggressive, beligerent and have serious issues keeping calm under pressure. I have had to threaten the school with school board action if they did not get the situation under control. Kids who are consistent nightmares and under-parented are not dealt with effectively at all. I considered private school many times but could not afford it.

There isn't much homework anymore and that seems to be across the board. I don't mind this but I also feel they don't effectively communicate when there IS homework so parents know to look out for it.

We've had hit or miss experiences here. Some of the teachers are great, while others, like the electives teachers are either fabulous or absolutely terrible.

Overall, I am unhappy with the student population and how the troublesome kids are handled - if at all. It has caused an issue for my son multiple times over the years and I don't believe someone else's misbehaving should get in the way of your child's academic participation.

My son has been at westowne for 2 years. So far, our experience has been stellar. He has had some challenges and they were very proactive with resolutions. My son also required some speech therapy and they did a great job getting him to where he needed to be. Our teachers have been great and the parents are very involved in the school. The PTA is also very good.

I appreciate that my daughter isn't surrounded by all students who look just like her and who have the exact same background. This school has kids from all different countries and cultures.

I have daughters in kindergarten and 1st grade, and homework is very reasonable. My K daughter doesn't get any homework, which is fine with me. She's above grade level, and I appreciate that the teachers value family time in the evening. My 1st grade daughter just started getting writing homework every Monday that is due on Thursday. Again, homework isn't really a huge focus at Westowne, which I find really refreshing, especially since so many schools take it too seriously and put too much weight on homework.

We've had 2 fantastic classroom teachers, and 1 just "ok" classroom teacher. The art teacher does REALLY cool stuff with the kids, like using clay and a kiln! So neat!

I love that they focus on the "Zones of Regulation" for emotional regulation. Kids aren't punished for feeling sad or angry. Teachers really try and meet the emotional needs of students and hold conferences to discuss the most appropriate strategies for each individual child.

Mr. Palmer is always visible in the school, at the front door, in the office, etc. He communicates speedily and effectively with parents. I'm a teacher myself, and Mr. Palmer is the type of principal I'd love to work for.

Excellent. We love this school community. Parents, administration and staff are passionate about keeping Westowne great. Despite the bizarre change in ranking here, this schoool is doing better than ever from our experience.

We have had some challenges from BCPS transportation and the administration has been actively implementing changes to resolve. Supportive of the community and seem to be respected by staff.

The school has been great for my son in kindergarten. The teachers and staff are in constant communication with the parents regarding curriculum and behavioral concerns. My only complaint is that the students miss out on things like Halloween parties since the administration seems a little overly concerned about not offending people.

We have loved being a part of the diverse community at Westowne! The new building is beautiful and the faculty and families have all been so supportive. I live that my kids have friends from all over the world. It is such a great experience for them and hey love it there!

The principal, Scott, has no idea what goes on in a special needs classroom. He was rude and disrespectful when discussing issues involved around student learning.

He had far more valuable things to do with his time then to worry about a student with special needs.

Brandnew everything, building, smartboards, computers, it's wonderful! Classdojo makes it very easy to stay on top of my daughter's progress. Her kindergarten homework is light but clear, she loves all her peers. She had an issue on the bus so I emailed the principal and it was immediately taken care of, the office receptionist is friendly, it has an active PTA, Facebook page, and offers good after school clubs.

I am very impressed with Westowne. I have a very good opinion of Mr. Boyd, the principal and my grandson's teacher, Mrs. Menton.
Recently, we had a wonderful time there for Grandparents Day and my grandson appears to be doing well there. The atmosphere is friendly, supportive and the quality of teaching, judging from what I've seen is high.

I too have found terrible inconsistencies in the quality of teachers, grade level standards, and school rules. The principal does not provide the leadership that is needed. Parents can be involved as long as it's with PTA activities and things that generate money. Start asking questions about curriculum, classroom management, and school policies and you are stonewalled. The school population is ethnically diverse, but the administration is not - definitely a red flag. If your child needs special education services, like a 504 Plan or an IEP, be prepared to advocate quite strongly to make sure your child gets what he/she needs. The only way to get results is to escalate concerns outside of the school i.e. the BCPS Superintendent. If I could afford private school, I would have pulled my kids out of Westowne.

Westowne Elementary School is hit or miss with regard to teacher quality. Some teachers are incredible. Others are absolutely terrible. The principal does not appear to make an effort to improve the situation and parents have had to go to the district level to see changes made to ensure consistency among teachers within even the same grade. Parental involvement is not encouraged in most classes and starting in the 2012-2013 school year, parents must get the principal's permission to be in the school building. There are no room parents in most classes nor are class lists standard. The first after school activity in many years has just been added. This is a Lego Robotics Club. Unfortunately it is a pricey activity.
