This school did nothing about bullying, nothing about the teachers who taught nothing but still asked kids to do work, some of the staff are very rude for no reason, and the kids are violent. This school is terrible, if you think that coming here is a good idea, it's not even close, you will be bullied and get hurt by students. The staff doesn't care unless their job is on the line. It has got to the point where this school made it about grades then actual learning. This school is the worst and I highly recommend to not go to this school.

The teachers are rude and vary disrespectful, only like two teachers are nice though. The school is very poor, you have to turn in sports jerseys you paid for. Don't get me started on school lunch, worse than on TikTok. Racism is basically reinvented here. I hope this school can get better with the new priceable 2024-2024.

I, a student at Southern Middle School thinks this school is terrible. The teachers just give you work sheets and expects you to finish them without explaining anything. Its not all the teachers that are bad, but 80% of them don't care about your feelings. You get lunch detention for stupid reasons and most kids mental health are decreasing rapidly because of this school. There are two guidance counselors which are great and actually care for you but its mainly the teachers and how much work they assign. One of my teachers had us do a whole project every month and it was really tiring because we only got one period every week to finish it, and sometimes we wouldn't even get to work on it. The school resource officers are not a problem except how everyone hangs around them and misses some of there classes with them. The mental health is getting in the way of our school work because we miss classes trying not to cry and calm down. This school focuses on finding what your doing wrong, like in the hallways you cant wear hoods or headphones. I get the headphones but in the Calvert County Public Schools Students' Rights, Responsibilities and Code of Conduct it states on page 22 that student are permitted to wear hate, hoods, or headwear as long as the face and ears are visible and the students identity is not concealed. This school hates hoods and make you take them down if your in the hallways or in a class with a strict teacher. Which is most of the classes. This school does have currency called Sourbucks that you get for being good to do certain activities. But most students teachers dont give them out. My experience at this school is terrible and my mental health is terrible. You cant even trust the teachers with personal information without them sharing it to the other teachers in the teachers lounge. Last year there was a fight so bad the girls nose was bleeding everywhere. This school doesn't do anything about fights except tackle the students to make them stop. there are no further repercussions and this school had a mouse problem, at one point we had a mouse come into our class and run around. This school is really low maintenance and the teachers aren't the best. I wouldn't suggest coming here.

My experience with this school has been a frustrating one.Trying to get help for my son has been a series of hoops to jump through. If you call the school with a question everyone is always in a meeting and cannot answer your question. As a parent I was treated poorly by certain staff members. The school is more concerned with checking off their boxes on forms than caring about a concerned mother or the well being of her son. I was treated me poorly and I felt totally disrespected by certain staff members.

My daughter just finished 6th grade at Southern and had a good year. The first few months were bumpy because she didn't know many kids, but she got involved and that helped tremendously. She found the teachers to be caring and and as parents we feel they were not only competent but helpful. The principal does a good job communicating through monthly newsletters and he seems very involved with keeping things running smoothly. As with any middle school, there are ups & downs as kids at this age are going through a lot of transitions, but SMS has been a good experience so far. The volunteer base doesn't seem as strong as elementary school years, but no doubt that is due to most famlies having 2 working parents.

Absolutely disgusted with this school. If the teachers are not good, they are horrendous. I have been more than unhappy with this school for years. Administration has absolutely no idea what they are doing. Poor communication between teachers and students, and a poor learning environment. Kids who don't care distract others who do care. Cliques are everywhere - you are always being judged just walking through the hallway. I truly feel bad for whoever has to go to this school in the future. Teachers and admins make false accusations on a daily basis. Staff also makes decisions that make you wonder if they have any common sense, and students too. There are fights on a regular basis, whether it's verbal or physical. Needless to say, no child of mine will ever consider going to this school. They'd be better off tearing the whole thing down and splitting the kids up between CMS and MCMS. Mostly all students are embarrassed to be going here (including myself), and have no school spirit whatsoever. I shall finish saying I have not gotten the middle school level education that I wished, and that I most certainly will not miss this school at any point in my life. Never send your kids here!!

Positive reinforcement from teachers and great communication from principal regarding happenings at school. Very supportive environment for students.

Great staff are wonderful with the kids! The administration is very personable and the teachers go out of their way to help students of all levels achieve their best.
