I’ve never actually heard anybody get help from mental health and the safety isn’t that well established as kids will start attacking each other and teachers only end up helping by the time it’s too late

This school is not too bad (like all of the other reviews say) but just make sure to be cautious about the other students. I'm just going to give an advance warning to sensitive parents and students that people cuss a lot at this school. I've only ever been in the 6th grade of the school before moving out of the state, so I don't have a complete opinion on the school. Now let's talk about the categories that GreatSchools has provided me with.

Learning:
This is about as good as you would expect. No teenager is willing to learn about the quadratic formula, because that's just middle school, I guess.

Special Education:
I see some disabled kids in the school, and they seem like they're having a normal time.

Teaching:
The teachers are trying their best to be respectful, kind, and supportive. They try to motivate their students to learn by giving them incentives, like a free class period.

Safety:
This is the only thing that is preventing this review from being a 4-star one. There are a lot of bullies, and even though that's just middle school, the teachers may or may not help. They might need to attend to other matters in the school. My suggestion is that you find some good friends and keep your old ones.

Social-emotional support:
They try their best, so points for them. But yes, they actively work to help other students' mental and emotional health, and it's very effective in doing so.

Family Engagement:
The staff constantly send emails to the students' families, for better or for worse.

In closing, this school is kind of good, but not "you HAVE to try this" good. But for a middle school, it seems to be performing adequately.

I do not really know where to start with the issues at Thomas Viaduct. The school has a terrible, unchecked bully problem. Even though HOCO has a zero tolerance, I do not think it reached the school yet. Many instances of kids being bullied, some so bad parents have transferred schools. My daughter has been bullied by two boys since 6th grade. I have emailed and called, with no response. When I went up to the school to advocate for the protection of my daughter ( who at this point the boy punched in the stomach,) I was told I needed an appt and that the principal and staff needed notice.
Little to no support academically. If you ask how can they receive help I was told they can send home a tutor list. So I guess teachers do not care to give up time to help their students.
I have overheard a teacher complaining about " city kids'. No matter where the child comes from they are deserving of an education, this coming from a life long resident. I have witnessed an attitude of not caring. It is a shame as my two oldest had a great experience in HOCO schools.
In closing, move before enrolling your child here.

I feel compelled to write a review as my son has only attended here since September 2025 and its' been a not so great experience. The communication is horrible. If you have a sixth grader please don't expect them to prepare you as the parent or your child. It's clearly a transition from elementary to middle school, taking 7 classes a day dealing with 7 different teachers with various ways of teaching. None following the same guidelines for assignments or grades. Some teachers have a better understanding of this and will work with your student others are non responsive, short tempered, and unrealistic. Some update assignments and grades timely others you won't really know how your child is doing until the end of the month when they finally grade things and input them in canvas. The school sends out weekly newsletters, however they recently planned a dance that parents were given a day or two to sign permission slips and pay for a ticket. There was no grace period and its a day after the deadline and due to poor communication and lack of proper notice my son cannot attend the school dance. Way to make the kids feel singled out, this was more than disappointing and made my son very upset.

Not to mention I've called student services several times and left messages with no response, as I'm trying to get my son out of band that we never signed him up for to begin with. He isn't doing well in band and is very uninterested. He has never gotten a E before in school and due to this band class he received a E on his report card. If you ask to speak with a principal or assistant principal good luck! The front office will just say they get a lot of calls and complaints but there is nothing they can do they are just the main office personnel ..... I heard pretty bad things about this school prior to my son attending but this is his last year here anyways we will be moving so he can attend a better school because this one does not care about its students.
Sincerely
A disgusted parent

The reviews here are rather negative, but--as a former student--I would like to shed a more positive light on this school. Yes, there are fights--some of the kids can be rude, but that's just middle school. But overall, my experience here was a positive one. Not too many teachers are stand-out (in a positive or negative way) but there's always some that truly engage their students in learning. For your kid to be successful at this school, they need to be self motivated and make good friends.

This school is absolutely terrible. Teachers are so disrespectful and they do absolutely nothing. And, the principal is terrible. Like, there's fights and bullying all the time but she doesn't do anything. And omg the students here are so disrespectful. They judge you for who you are (race, looks, etc). And, the counselors don't give good advice when you feel upset. Like my counselor just told me to talk to my mom about what she does when literally my mom isn't chill like that. My mom's extremely strict and the fact that the counselors cant understand that is crazy. Overall, this school is terrible and I wish Howard county shut it down.

I'm about to graduate from this school and I have to say I am disappointed in this school. We have fights almost every day, and the administration doesn't do anything to punish the fighters, instead, they suspend people who have done minor things instead of actually suspending the people who fight. The teachers do not teach, they are making us do work without instructions and then they wonder why we have bad grades. This school has also taken a mental toll on me and multiple others at this school, making it a non-safe environment for substantial learning or just being here in general. Kids come to this school everyday scared of what may happen and it's not funny. And then the school expects us to lie to people who do not come here about this school and act like our school is perfect and everything is fine.

(PARENTS: I am not overreacting or making things up just to make the school look bad, instead I am reviewing on personal experience and the experiences of my classmates and peers. Thank you.)

yes everybody has there own idea in this school, some things aren't meant for everybody. i can talk to a lot of teachers most of the time, how could all the teachers be nice when they get disrespected everyday for just doing their job?? that doesn't add up, if you don't talk to a teacher or have a relationship w/ the teacher why would they just randomly speak to you when you have something going on. the students say that they don't feel safe because of the bullying, its middle school not everybody knows how to process their emotions but they should. for the fights not getting broken up, if a student isn't jumping in to stop and recording it, what's different about a teacher?? let them do what they gotta do because they still are gonna fight it out but students are the main ones saying just go fight. don't try to make the school look bad like the teachers and admin aren't trying, you're just not noticing what they gotta do. I will say I learned things at the school, my grades aren't the best but I can say that's my fault. thank you thomas viaduct !! and for the students y'all need to learn how to take accountablity please!!

Being a formal student here now, all I can say is how it's terrible. Fights are happening a lot and people are getting bullied a lot (including me) for no apparent reason. Sometimes the teachers barely do anything and they just watch the students fight. To be honest, I don't feel safe being at this school.

This school is horrible they are very sexist and the majority of teachers don’t care about you and they never support you and the favorite is wild. Also they are never fair or equal and the students are horrible they are disgusting disrespectful and horrible and the environment is very toxic and wild. I can guarantee that fights happen every single day and they barely care especially the women teachers here have favorites and they never understand the type of situation your in which makes it difficult to learn as most if the teachers delay stuff and are always so behind and don’t care about your emotions and say anything without hesitation. The students are the worst of all they have no respect they are rude disrespectful have plenty of attitude and nor do they respect there pears or there adults this school is ruined I myself as a student don’t even feel safe just being around this environment there’s vandalism kids are smoking vaping and don’t care about there future or the outside world and environment that the so called “teachers” try to prepare them for. Also and they are very toxic the students will create accounts on social media and post you or someone else and they find the worst pictures just to humiliate you or humble you are make you feel worst for yourself and these people don’t care about how you feel and make fun of you all day and never will they will disrespect including the teachers thinking and saying you will never become anything in life. Also they don’t have faith in you and there teaching is horrible as a student i find it difficult to learn.Lastly i cannot wait to literally get out of this misery this school is the worst in the whole county i strongly advise you to go to an other school.

TL;DR This school isn't great at all, there's always fights and the food is the only good thing (sometimes...)

Let me start by saying if Wilde lake didn't exist this would be the worst school in Howard County, someone once brought a whole knife to school, although when this happened I was still in elementary school, not to mention so many people are leaving the school because of how dangerous it is, actually dangerous is more a exaggeration because the "dangerous" people ar mostly posers, sometimes the food is good, other times it was so bad my friend called the company that made it (the phone number was on the packaging) I forgot to say there's a lot of fights in the school and people dance and rave because it's actually the most fun we ever have, the principal doesn't really do anything to stop them from happening, actually they kinda make it worse. Basically, this school is not for beginners, which is sad because this is a great neighborhood, it's just that the school is basically like prison for 6th graders.

This school is kind of good but I wouldn't give it full stars. There are students that bring tasers into the school, yes I did say tasers and they fired one off at lunch one day, the teacher heard it and went up to the student but just gave the taser back to the student. There was actually another incident with a taser with that same student as well. They also have a student-made Instagram page where they post videos and images making fun of other students and not posting them with consent either. (I understand this from personal experience.) And the school has not even tried taken it down after maybe even hundreds of reports. But other then that I would say the school is okay, most teachers don't give a lot of homework but they hold you to high expectations. Personally I would say not to come here but it's up to the parents.

Posted: August 13, 2018

It’s not to bad or not too good but they could really use a staff upgrade!

Posted: August 13, 2018

This school shouldn’t have been built or the Howard county school system needs to pick better staff instead of always building new schools.

Posted: August 13, 2018

This school homework system is not good due to the fact the teachers are not good at explaining the material to the students and they expect the students to know what he/she is talking about.

Posted: August 13, 2018

No because the school was like “free jobs but you must be really horrible at everything you do.”

Posted: July 16, 2018

they have a great group of teachers who are very dedicated and always ready to go the extra mile for the students. I think the biggest strength of this school is the dedicated teachers.

This is where I have my doubts. My kid is a very patriotic person who loves this country. She does not like when somebody disrespect the National anthem or the flag or the morning pledge. But this is what she experience everyday. More people say they hate this country than they love or appreciate it. But this could be the reflection of the sentiment of the entire country rather than a problem with this school.

Posted: July 16, 2018

The principal is leading the way from the front. She is firm and thorough yet humane and accessible. Tries to get to know all the students by person as well as their parents. She is a dominating presence all over the school. According to my kid she is everywhere, in the hallways, in the class rooms, where ever any thing important happens in the school. Teachers and the students alike always feels her presence throughout the day which always keep their feet to the fire. She is really effective, no doubt.

Posted: July 16, 2018

I really have no idea about this aspect of the school.

Posted: July 16, 2018

My child came to this school half way in her middle school life. We were very concerned about the bullying aspect. But very happy to say that not once she complained about bullying. And she says she hasn't seen any bullying incident in the school. She asks who would dare to do bulling when Ms Jones is around. But this is her individual experience, I'm sure there may be other kids who feel differently. But I am sure bullying is not a burning issue in this school.

Posted: July 16, 2018

It was very positive. We were very skeptical when we moved in to the neighbourhood, at a glance everything was not very good with this school. Minority majority, above 40% school lunch recipients etc. Looked like a typical troubled school. But it is not, it is not what is looks like. It's much better place for it's outlook. I believe it should be rated better.

Posted: July 16, 2018

I do not recommend this school for anyone.she be "trying to male this school better" but what all she is doing is making it worst. I am soo happy that i moved out of that school. But there were some nice teachers like mrs.weyforth in 7th grade. Again I DONT RECOMMEND THIS SCHOOL FOR YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER- from ivan perez morales

I have had two of my children attend this school and yes the appearance of the school is well kept. The teachers here you have your good and bad but I believe you will get that with every school unfortunately. That is why teaching for my kids does not only take place at school. This school will surely go down quick if there is not any change in the administration staff and disciplinery actions the take for bullying and fighting. They downplay a lot of what goes on in this school when it comes to those issues. The principal will kill you with kindness but really doesn't have any concern when it comes to the bullying and fighting at this school. There definitely needs to be some change at this school the kids are the ones suffering while administration does not address the issues at hand.I chose 2 stars because I take bullying very serious and this school has no clue how out of hand it can get with no discipline given out because they are too worried about there high score to take care of the problems and keeping it quiet so they remain a great school.Fix the problems and that won't be hard to achieve.

Posted: January 6, 2017

I have had 2 of my children who attend this school. Yes the school looks great because it's new but there is so much more to a school because of the way it looks. Teachers here some are good some are just ok.This school will surely get worse over time if there is no change in administration and the discipline for the kids.I do believe they downplay a lot of the fighting and bullying that goes on in this school because they are new and trying to maintain a good image. Looks good for the school and staff to receive a high score but the kids are suffering when it comes to these issues. The principal will try and kill you with kindness but she does not address the issues at hand. There definitely needs to be some change at this school and soon.

Good school with teachers that care about the students.

Posted: May 20, 2016

From my son's description of the school and my first hand experience. The policies and rules need major scrutiny as to whether the benefit is for the teacher or student. Some teachers are not experienced enough to set clear directions, encourage your children to understand their assignments before leaving class. They do not care about teaching our children; just getting a pay check. My son indicated he does not understand the assignments and many of the other students; likewise they get upset because the instructions are not clear and they do not take the time to help students understand. Instead, they throw the teachers responsibility on something called "Lunch Bunch"; take away from their meal time to get something good and healthy or recreational and substitute that for understanding assignments, which they are to make sure that students receive before they leave class. The Vice President does an effective job with communication and addressing parents concerns. But the vice president and president are reluctant to be more hands on with their instructors and compliance issues. Babysitting in a class everyday is not effective. We need good effective educators who care about our children and go above an beyond to assist our children.

Frustrated students equals a chaotic day, which you feel every time you walk into that school. Even the secretary interaction with the students is rude. They are nice to the parents but treat the children like animals who need puppy training.

This school needs work. Beautiful grounds and pleasing front of the school. Makes people want to attend. This is why I gave it an average rating. If we can get better teachers who care then it would be awesome.

Shout out to some good teachers there like Geography (McWilliams who cares). My son loves this class.
