This school passes everyone, they inflate grades if a.child had over 50 NHI in one quarter they see nothing wrong with it, how about a 1 percent overall in.the class for almost an entire quarter still nothing wrong with it, when report cards come out instead of giving zeros for all the work not done they give the kids 50 on every NHI ...guess what that.does push the kids to a passing D ...don't get me started on all the open notebook test and quizzes ..and the part where you can retake the problems you get wrong as many times as you need to get it right on a test! Look at this schools report card compared to the county and state report cards and you will know why barely any of their students are proficient in anything and why they test so much lower than the rest ..principal is impossible to get ahold of, and they don't report neglect at all...their students are set up for a future of failure ..

Havre de Grace school are far superior to any other school system in the county. Walking into the building, the energy and pride is palpable. This can be said for all HDG schools, especially the elementary but it has certainly carried over into the Middle/High. What the Elementary school instilled in our scholars is reflected in the way they continue to carry themselves throughout their educational experience. We previously attended Bel Air Middle and High and my student who is at Havre de Grace has had a total 180 of an educational experience than my other children did. The teachers and staff care about the students and go above and beyond to ensure they are being successful. Don't understand something/ not prepared for a test? The math teacher will literally skip his lunch break to spend time with your scholar 1:1 to go over the lesson again. The teachers are communicative with parents and the expectations of the students are clearly defined. This trickles down from the top; The Principal Mr. Spense is a HDG grad and his warrior pride shines through in every way. There are fights, yes. Bullying, yes. But having experience in other middle schools in the county and comparing to our HDG experience is like night and day. HDG is more invested in developing character, good people, and the total growth of your child vs test scores.

The learning is okay, not too difficult and not too easy. But you'll either get a nice teacher who actually enjoys their job or a mean teacher who yells at your kid for everything they do that annoys them. The school will only care about your mental health if they want to. I reported a kid several times but nothing was done until the last few days of school but another time I got talk talked in the hallway about it because I had done something mean to one of my friends accidentally. They will not do anything about the students that joke around. And if they do it's over-the-top screaming at them. I don't know about special education that much. And their isn't really any parent events. Basically, don't send your child here if they have anxiety and or depression because they'll hate it and don't send your disruptive child here because it will only fuel them more. Giving two stars because at least everyone's not dumb in this school and I have some friends.

Rarely do the check the home or review to ensure the child understands the material.

I think the teachers are ineffective due to number children that are required to teach. They don't have enough time to individually learn students. Basically, if you are not a behavior problem or child in the top 5 percentile you are irrelevant. They teach students as a group oppose to individuals. The teachers poor interaction with the parents.

They have a significant problem with bullying within their school and they do nothing to resolve it. Their main component of managing it is suspension, which is not working. You can definitely see the decline in the children as they transition from strong elementary schools to a less than adequate middle school.

Lacks communication skills; creativity; and poor direction. Will not greet parents when entering the office. Thank goodness the have good office staff because they makeup for their poor and limited interaction the administration provides. I doubt the truly know the students in the school.

Posted: November 15, 2018

They treat all children as a group or object. They lack the capacity to treat children as individuals and address their individual needs. Their goal is to basically push children through, especially if they are not a behavior issue.

Posted: November 15, 2018

Bullying is a major issue within the school.

Overall, I can not recommend this school for any child. It's unfortunate because the elementary school system in Harford County provides a very strong foundation to only be lost as they enter this Middle School.

This school is horrible. They have these bully groups called squads. They will start fights with your child for no reason at all. They are just thugs plain and simple. Forget trying to get the staff to help because they have to keep everything equal meaning your good student has to be put in the thug category to survive. Political correctness on steroids.

Do not go to this school, i repeat do not go to hdg middle, i mean the high school is okay and the elementry schools are fine but the middle is terrible. the teachers constantly yell at kids and insult them, complete rasim and terrible bullying by students. Lots of fights have been reported, students getting depressed, lots of cussing and rude gesters, the counslor doesn't even help you if you have problems. they send you right to the office if you have a problem and they can't apperently fix it. I think the problem is, is that the audlts don't know how to properly handle the kids and part of it is because of a mixture of races and different people. If you think aberdeen is bad and edgewood, you have another school on that list.

I am very disappointed in this school. I write the teachers to get progress on my daughter and the teachers actually ignore the emails. They do not update the edline until after the quarter is over and my daughter already has a grade I don't approve of. This is a very, very poor school that does not let you know anything that is going on until after it is too late. If you can avoid this school at all, please do so. The teachers don't care about the students and don't bother to let the parents know what is going on.

My son started going to Havre de Grace Middle School in 5th grade and so far it's been a horrible experience for me because my son has been failing and the teachers don't tell you nothing so you are clueless until you receive their report card. SURE, there's "Edline" but people have busy lives. I think the most important thing about a school is COMMUNICATION between teacher, parent and student. This school doesn't care about their students because if they did, they would be doing everything they could to help my son in the areas he is weak in. I am as involved as I can be, emailing the teachers all the time and checking Edline. One time I even asked the teacher to please tutor my son in math after school but she emailed me back and told me she doesn't really think he needs tutoring. WHAT THE HECK?! If my son is getting poor grades than he DOES need extra help! LAZY teachers! This school is seriously driving me to send my son to a private school! I am so disappointed with this school because Havre de Grace is such a nice area but this school is HORRIBLE!

I was worried about sending my 7th grader to middle school for the first time this year. We are a military family and the last state we were in, elementary went up to sixth grade. We had a rough first couple weeks as my son tried to get used to it. It was hard since the teachers did not know he was new to middle school so he was spoken to like he already had a year under his belt. However, once I spoke to the teachers and they understood where he was coming from, things improved greatly. The guidance counselor and teachers helped him when he needed it and help set him back on his feet. My son likes his teachers and his classes well enough. He's not fond of most of the students, however. He complains about students trying to trip others in the hallway. He is very excited to start robotics this year and I'm very pleased the school is able to offer this. The computer teacher's enthusiasm over this class was evident. I think as far as middle schools go, we hit gold. The teachers care, I'm not worried for my son's safety, and even his bus driver seems to know how to deal with them.
