My son went to this school for almost a whole school year and unfortunately I had to pull my special needs son out immediately.

I initiated updating my sons transportation and made three points of contact, two written, to update this. They mistakenly sent my special needs son to the wrong home to which we both had severe emotional reactions to.

The issue is when i asked for a meeting and an apology directly to my son by phone and in writing to ensure his safety was a priority they ignored several requests. All of this i have written proof for and I have reported the school. But the Assistant Principal and Special Needs Coordinator Kim Woods handled things incredibly unprofessionally so I removed my son.

We adore this school. I'm the parent of a bright kid just finishing 1st grade. His teachers have been very experienced and skilled at tailoring lessons to individual kids. It's a very diverse school, which we consider a huge positive. It's wild to me that GreatSchools gives it such a poor rating. If it had been 100% white, GreatSchools would have disregarded the equity score. It's punishing excellent diverse neighborhood schools like this one. I can see what they're trying to do with the equity score, but they must be able to see the dangerous effect it has on schools like this one, especially in the real estate apps. Anyway, that was the rant. We live Bryant Woods.

Not happy to have started here. Glad to have moved away from this place. Dont do this to your young kids.

Very little homework is the norm in most classes

Bad admin and bad principal. Stay away. She actually displays a Believe poster on her door as if this was Baltimore last decade.

The school culture is not conducive to promoting non-conformist minds and a lot of unnecessary aggression exists.

I love BWES, the principal, staff, and teachers. My daughter has been here for 5 years & I make sure to be as involved as time allows. They have attempted to communicate early & often about events and have decent after school activities.

I am not at all thrilled with this school. I want to transfer hmy son but they do not allow school changes without us moving. Highly dislike this school and its complete lack of communication with parents.

Students have the same worksheets sent home all year. Some have the same concept while others are the exact same copy of previous assignments.

Posted: May 26, 2018

As with all schools, some teachers are excellent and others are the exact opposite. We had a great pre-k teacher, horrible kindergarten teacher and a decent 1st grade teacher. Hoping for at least mediocre for second grade next year.

The students are always at war with each other. My son was asked by another student in kindergarten "why did you help her, shes brown and you're not" The kids are clearly being taught terrible things at home and the school does not acknowledge that this exists.

My concerns as a parent are not taken with much seriousness by the admins at BWES.

It ignores acts of racism and lets the kids act like wild animals outside. They constantly beat up on each other while I'm waiting to pick my son up after school. My son comes home all the time and tells me about kids who bite, hit or kick him and nothing is being done by the staff.

My son just started at this school. He is in 4th grade and is loving his new school as well as his teacher and his classmates. I attended back to school night and was impressed as well as inspired by all the energy and passion in the room. The teachers are lively and very well prepared to the job at hand. The front desk has been nothing but helpful in answering all the questions I have for them. I am happy to be part of this community.

Bryant Woods is a great little school. It's small size helped my son transition from a small preschool setting to an elementary school. They have a great student to staff ratio and lots of funding for enrichment programs. The school had been able to accommodate my above grade level son in order to keep him from becoming bored.

Bryant Woods has been a wonderful experience for my family! There is a lot of comradery amount the staff. Ms Hough has been a wonderful administrator! She really cares for all the children. There is so much for the children to enjoy at the school! From extra curricular activities to pta activities to school sponsored activities. This really is a great school! I couldn't have asked for a better experience for my daughter's elementary years!

Bryant Woods is a great little school that is tucked away in one of Columbia's oldest neighborhoods. It has a diverse student population which is a good representation of the city that we live in. It is a Title 1 school, but because of this the teachers have an enormous amount of funds and resources to provide the best learning experience to all of the students. Because of the Title 1 status, it has also been chosen as a pilot school for numerous enrichment programs that Howard County would like to eventually implement in all of their schools. All of the teachers that I have had the pleasure to work with really care about the students and want them to learn. We had an awful experience with a former principal, but our current administration (Ms. Hough and Mrs. Williams McKinney) are awesome and are working very hard to make learning at Bryant Woods a very positive experience.

Bryant Woods staff made my son's preschool experience enjoyable...They encouraged his love for reading and pushed him to be creative! I also had my stepson at the school who came to County schools from the city schools to get a better education he was 2 grade levels behind and they worked very hard to help him get to his correct grade level and they did! They kept in contact with me and I always welcomed to come to the school and talk with any of the teachers!

We have had a mixed experience with teachers at BWES- some are great but some have been really terrible. Our son really fell behind in the 3rd grade in great part because of poor teaching skills and classroom management on the part of his teacher. There are a lot of children with behavioral problems at the school and as a parent I have witnessed a student hitting a parent, numerous temper tantrums and children being openly defiant to teachers and administrators. Even with some of the best teacher-student ratios in the county, there just isn't enough staff to handle the demands of this high need student populaion.
