I would like to share my experience as a parent of a former student at Elkridge Elementary School. While the school may have strengths in academic programming, our family's experience raised serious concerns about equity, inclusion, and the overall treatment of students from diverse racial backgrounds.

During the one year my daughter attended, we observed patterns that suggested unequal treatment. As a Black family, we felt that our concerns were not taken seriously, and that our child was not given the same level of support or encouragement as some of her peers. It seemed that students from certain backgrounds — particularly white students — were prioritized and better accommodated.

We were also troubled by the lack of diversity among the teaching and administrative staff. With a staff demographic that appears to be overwhelmingly white, it was difficult not to feel that cultural understanding and sensitivity were lacking. This became especially apparent in how behavioral or academic concerns involving students of color were handled.

Additionally, many staff members live in the surrounding neighborhood, which may contribute to an insular environment. This can sometimes create unconscious bias, whether intentional or not, especially toward families who are new, different, or from underrepresented communities.

Due to these challenges, we ultimately decided to move our daughter to a different school where we felt she would be better supported and valued. We hope that Elkridge Elementary — and the broader school system — takes steps to invest in diversity training, inclusive hiring practices, and open dialogue with families of all backgrounds.

Every child deserves a fair, respectful, and welcoming educational experience. We sincerely hope that improvements can be made so that future students and families do not face the same challenges.

This country has the potential to be truly great — but only if we continue to confront and eliminate racism in all forms, including in our schools. Our children deserve better, and we can all do better.

We’ve been here 4 years & it’s been wonderful. We have had our fair share of problems like bullying and it is always dealt with immediately which I appreciate. My son loves Mrs. Powell (principal). He even uses his elk bucks to have lunch with her lol. I love the PTA too, there are plenty of ways to get involved.

Worst School Ever. Never met a principal who is so Incompetent. As a Mother with 2 older children I have NEVER had to deal with such a toxic school.
Teachers are completely condescending and act like they are listening for the sake of their reputation.
Kids are absolutely disgusting and rude in their behavior and when it is brought to the attention of the teachers they recommend stupid suggestions.
Once attention is brought to principal about situation, Mrs.Powell is very rude and smug. Trying to have a discussion with her is like talking to a brick wall. She immediately cuts off parents and students when talking and completely ignores concerns of many parents.
This school has to be the most dysfunctional school I have ever seen to be quite honest. I wouldn’t recommend you send your child here unless you want constant complaints from your child with no resolution. To better this school I feel as if a more attentive and educated Principal would fit in this situation. For our children we need someone who can lead and protect them when we are not around

This school is outstanding! The teachers and volunteer support is incredible, very hard working staff who truly cares about the kids learning. The school also has alot of after school hour events that the kids enjoy. Parent involvement is encouraged as you cannot expect the teachers to do everything. The teaching shows through with each kid’s progress, our son does incredibly well here.

I see a review stating they only help white students… that is far from the truth. As long as you aren’t white you will do great in this school. You can bully kids, spit on them and get away with it. This school has went down hill! Never had any issues at my child’s old school, this one gives me a head ache.

EES has everything you could want for your child-- dedicated teachers and staff, involved parents, an active PTA, an amazing group of diverse students, a large team of resource teachers and specialists, tons of enrichment seminars and GT programs, after school activities offered by the Howard County Recs and Parks, and fun day and evening events-- all in one of the best school systems in the country! We are very happy here.

My son attended EES this past fall and we loved it! He was in Ms. Herman's Kindergarden class and we absolutely loved her! We love EES!

My daughter attended from K-5 grade. We couldn't ask for a better school. Everyone is friendly and caring. She received an excellent education here. I was sad to see her leave to attend middle school.

excellent school,, great, caring staff, very involved parents and families rating definitely needs to be higher

This school is a hidden gem, often overlooked by the rating of 6 (as of 06/2013). The principal is excellent, the teachers are hardworking and good. With school redistricting (due to new school, Ducketts Lane Elementary), the rating of this school should definitely go up.

This school is fabulous. My son was at a private school for kindergarten and entered 1st grade below reading level. By the end of the year he was above reading level. The common core curriculum is outstanding. Each child in his class received what they needed to make the best of their situation. Each subject relates appropriately to a core theme making it interesting and fun. My son's teachers took the time to email me about a concern they had with his behavior (minor and "normal" for the age) but they felt it was out of character. The email was positive, polite, and very encouraging. They met with me after school hours and worked to see what we could do to make it better. I see nothing but great things from this school and am SO happy I moved my son.
