Sent my 2 kids to Glenelg High School and both did very well academically. Both performed extremely well on the SAT and ACT as the active school boosters actually paid for weekend study classes for the exams. The Theater/Music/Art programs definitely had a legacy of being the best in the county for years. My kids reported that several teachers liked to inject their political views into the classroom way too often. There is a culture of over-achievement and ambition which is largely due to a large number of parents are engineers and other various professionals so their kids are all trying to get into name brand colleges. Not quite the pressure cooker that Centennial HS is for test scores. The school football games were very well attended, my kids and their friends always tried to show up Friday nights, so school spirit was definitely present and the teams always performed well. Girls lacrosse was nationally ranked. Glenelg is one of the few schools in the county that have avoided redistricting of their school boundaries due to being the farthest west high school in the county and lowest crowding issues.

Students are challenged in advanced classes preparing them for workload in college.

Teachers are Glenelg are hit or miss. There are teachers who are ineffective and/or at times inappropriate expressing political and societal views.

Leadership is not responsive to parental concerns.

There are many support mechanisms for students with learning disabilities in the county.

The school ranks high in student achievement and college preparedness. What should be understood is that this is not so much an accomplishment of the school but instead the affluency and involvement of parents. Students on average have fewer discipline problems and are more driven to achieve academic success. The school is diverse and my children have formed many lasting friendships. The sports programs are competitive and well managed. The band/arts/drama programs are outstanding. I myself was a graduate over 30 years ago, have had 2 kids graduate in the past few years, and one currently there.

My experience at Glenelg was actually pretty wonderful. Initially I had my reservations but I quickly came to love the school and its atmosphere. There were undoubtedly some bad apples but they were very much in the minority, despite what has been said otherwise. The diverse extracurricular activities are a big part of the school and can really improve your time there. My very first year I ended up joining cross-country and made some of the best friends I've ever had. The drama department has consistently been one of the best in the county due to the stewardship of Mrs. Miller, and while she may have stepped down she went to the effort of hand picking her successor to make sure her impact on the school would be preserved. Academically Glenelg isn't the most competitive school in the county, but every year there have been excellent students who make it into Ivy League universities. Furthermore the mentorship program consistently prepares the best students for going out into the real world. Overall I would say that while there may be flaws about Glenelg it also has a great many motivated and outgoing individuals, students and teachers alike. If you put yourself out there and work your hardest you'll have a wonderful experience too.

This is an excellent school and teachers are willing to help after school. It has great extracurricular activities.

Glenelg is too concentrated on test scores and money to actually care about their students. Some of the teachers are good, but most don't do their job. High school should be fun, not torture. I shouldn't have so much stress that I hate going there avery day. I feel like I would be so much happier at another school. Also there is no diversity and a lot of the people are inconsiderate and rude.

This school is awful. There is no diversity, and my child feels uncomfortable every day. On top of that many of the teachers are rude and arrogant. Last year her teachers were so horrible that she was afraid to go to school everyday. My child views school as a prison rather than a healthy learning environment. She can't wait until graduation.

My son just began his junior year at Glenelg, and we couldn't be any happier. Glenelg has helped my son grow into himself. He got comfortable in his own skin under Mrs. Miller's guidance in theater, has now branched out into the music program, is taking his first AP classes, and has received excellent college planning advice from the guidance department. His teachers have consistently been dedicated to the success of their students, willing to stay after school to provide extra help and being readily available via e-mail for questions and concerns. Glenelg strikes a good balance between pushing kids to rise to the challenge and understanding that each child is unique. Their anti-bullying efforts are to be commended, and the administration takes firm steps to nip issues in the bud when problems inevitably arise. Glenelg also offers a wide range of after school clubs, sports, and activities to engage students. Cerebral kids can join the mock trial team or the debate club, while athletic kids have tons of sport options. There are also lots of artistic opportunities and clubs based on unique interests, such as anime club, book club, and writer's circle.

Glenelg needs an administration change. The climate and culture within the school is not functioning. This creates an organization that will take" GREAT" kids and turn them into negative products of the schools disfunction.
