My kid is thriving at Hammond High and is in mostly AP/GT courses. Assignments and feedback are very organized. He seems to be enjoying himself, despite the long study hours . He enjoys friendships that are supportive.
Ms. Reid is an engaged and effective Principal. The school sends emails to parents daily. The teachers are mostly veteran instructors who have command of their subjects. They care about the kids and enjoy them. This school appears to be an inclusive community. I am astounded by the opportunities provided for the students to help them on their path to being productive adults. The books, projects, and discussions are often college level. There is something for everyone. The upgrade of the building is wonderful.

Not applicable. The effort to place special needs children in sports is very heartwarming.

I think that Hammond is stuck in a rough situation. Its difficult for them to point to parents and say, your level of involvement equates to your childs' success. Too many parents at hammond think its the schools job to raise thier child. I sat in a 9th grade orientation and heard many parent questions related to how thier children could play football with bad grades. In response to those questions and to my surprise there is (and I quote) a "black parent-student liaison", who said it was his job to work with parents of black students to sort those things out and work as a bridge between the parents and administration.

My advise: If you care about your child's education, work with them daily in elementary and middle school so they can do well on the gifted and talented tests. In GT classes they will almost certainly be insulated with students that care about doing well and most issues you will hear about are relegated to the hallway non-sense.

At this age, the amount of homework is very light by comparison to when I was in school. I think there is too much of a focus on not stressing kids out, and its going to make them ill-prepared for college.

Posted: July 25, 2020

My child is in only GT and AP. As you would expect the harder the kids work the better the teachers at that level.

Posted: July 25, 2020

There are some students that seem to get away with skipping and admin can look out the window and see this, fighting, agressively screaming BLM in childrens faces in the hallway. Needless to say there is a correlation between successful students at Hammond High and parent involvement.

Im excited to see what the fairly new administration will do to change the culture from a sports only oriented mind set for a significant portion of the students to an academic oriented structure.

Currently, I have a 9th grader attending Hammond. The teachers are great! I've communicated with his teachers throughout the school year with no problem. I was able to keep up with my son's grades through hcpss connect which has been very effective. The staff is very professional and the Principal is the best! My son plans to get more involved with school activities his upcoming Sophomore year. I am very pleased with the Howard County school system.

I have had 2 children go through Hammond and both thrived under the leadership of Ms. Leonard and her wonderful, caring staff. My children were encouraged to become involved and to push themselves academically thanks to fantastic role models. They also made some great friends!

I love being a Golden Bear. As a student, you feel so included and cared about. The teachers are exceptional, they are amazing at teaching and I'm doing extremely well in the 4 AP classes I am taking. And of course, Ms. Leonard is the best principal ever. She is extremely inspiring and so genuine. She motivates and encourages us to work so hard. Hammond High is the best and I'm so proud to go there. Everyone cares about each other and everybody learns very well!

Principal Ms. Marcy Leonard is an inspiration to all with her incredible work ethic, positivity, energy and immense trust in her students. Staff is great and very approachable to students, and parents at all times. We are very happy as our child thrives in this wonderful environment. An all inclusive demographic of the school is a big plus as you can't get this kind of real world education in inclusivity, understanding and caring at any school. Academics, sports, extracurricular and clubs are great! Students here are genuinely loving, hard working and just a happy bunch. Kudos to Ms. Leonard on a wonderful job.

I love working at this school! The administrators are phenomenal and make the environment so easy to work in. The staff are respectful of each other and are very involved in having great relationships with the students. Overall, the students are great! Of course, no student is perfect, but there is definitely a sense of community and school pride that goes on in this school.

Under Marcy Leonard's leadership over the last six years, this high school has been top notch. Their motto, Where People are Important, is not a catch phrase, but a LIVED experience for all students. Kids here are very accepting of each other and find common ground and pride in their achievements. We have had two students go through Hammond and could not be happier with their experiences overall. Wonderful, respectful teachers, staff and administrators set great real life examples for the students each and every day!

YES. They do not tolerate bullying at all and develop comradely in student body with Pride Week at Homecoming and other community activities.

Posted: January 5, 2017

YES! Allied sports league is supported by other sports teams and coaches as well as strong academic inclusion.

Marcy Leonard, principal of the year multiple years, could not be any better! She should be nationwide principal of the year!

Posted: January 5, 2017

100% as much as possibly can. Parents and local community must also do so.

Posted: January 5, 2017

They show students respect which sets great example and ultimately leads students to show greater respect to adults in their communities. Teachers also show how much they care about student outcomes and achievements and go the extra mile for them.

All three of our children graduated from Hammond. They received excellent educations and subsequently received scholarships. Two were members of the National Honor Society and one was a member of the MD. State honors choir for two years. I believe that the teachers and the programs offered are a good indication of the school's value. When teachers are supported by the administration and the community, success is inevitable. Thank you Hammond High.

Excellent leadership from teachers, staff. The student leaders are guided to become mentors themselves.

Spent four years here, and although the facility is on the older side I met some of the most dedicated teachers of my career as a student. School is what you make it, and this particular school and a handful of exceptional teachers certainly prepared me for college as an engineering student at Virginia Tech.

Apply yourself, and you will be fine...regardless of the institution.

Principal Leonard is amazing and so are many of the teachers my student has had. Dedicated, kind, flexible and understanding. Students are respectful and the clubs and athletics have been inclusive. We've had a great experience so far and look forward to the future.

Hammond is a really good school. They really work hard to try to work hard to make me feel special. Its really hard not to feel special there. You'll feel at home. Good list of after-school clubs, sports life and the undeniable school pride that we are known for!!:) Go Hammond Bears :)

The school administration and staff are generally VERY helpful and responsive. The strong leadership of Ms. Leonard and many others there has had a great effect on this school. Nearly all the teachers help the students outside of class, and the number of extracurricular activities supported by the teachers is phenomenal. There is Homework Club and several other support programs, as well as tutoring provided by honor society students. The parent involvement is strong: the PTSA, Boosters, Music Boosters, and other organizations/volunteers put in hours and raise funds to keep the numerous activities going. The students show all of this in their school involvement: as only one example, the students get truly excited about Spirit Week (before Homecoming). The diversity of the student body is a plus. I have not looked to the test scores lately but can say my neighbors' families and my family's experiences with this school have been very positive.

Any school is better then Howard High. I find the teacher at Hammond willing to work with the students after school to make sure they pass.

Posted: November 4, 2014

It has fights and drama, the teachers don't care about you the students are bullies there's crowded hallways and people can't mind their own business or mind their manners. There only a few good teachers. Other then that my two years at Hammond High were horrible

Posted: April 6, 2013

Good teachers, but lack of administrative control - student behavior and hence learning in many classes is poor. Too much emphasis on athletics rather than scholarship

Posted: March 31, 2013

My child graduated from Hammond in 2012 and received a 4 year academic scholarship for college. The school has a lot of support for students identified with learning disabilities and the Ms. Leonard is awesome...very involved in all school related activities
