If you are looking for a school that emphasizes LGBTQ pride above everything else, this is the school for you.

Take a tour and you will see a wall permanently painted in rainbow colors, and displays, flags and posters all over the hallways and main office related to gender identities and sexual orientations. This is not just one or two posters. Its everywhere. Its hard to believe until you see it yourself.

Most classroom doors and classrooms have pride and queer related posters. School staff have pronouns and LGBT related logos in their email signatures.

If you think it's great for a school to be constantly bombarding kids as young as 12 with sexual messages, you will love this school.

Teachers encourage students to adopt a gender and pronouns and sit there smiling as kids announce them in class and tell the class that of course all the students will keep that secret from the student's parents.

A secret school sponsored Rainbow Club (under whatever name they call it) occurs during school hours, encouraging kids to explore sexual and gender topics. No parental notification or permission is required.

There is a school staff Rainbow Representative to encourage all of this but really the entire school seems on board. Rainbow "safe space" posters communicate to students that the world is hostile to them except these special spaces. It also communicates that students who do not identify as LGBTQ are not guaranteed safety or consideration.

Great school. Two kids have gone here so far. Great advanced music program plus lots of access to extra curricular music programs. Great theater program. Involved parents are always donating stuff to the school. Overall fantastic teachers and several class options for high school credit to allow kids to take other electives in high school.

First I would like to state that I am a former student of this school, my opinion is purely unbiased and not based on personal experience of this school.
This school is good, it learns the renowned Howard County curriculum, but that is where the positives end. While being located in the rather upscale 21043/21043 zip-code, students from other less affluent zip codes such as Columbia (21044) have been redistricted to this school, which keeps the school rather diverse. For people who are buying a home for the high school, I suggest you avoid this middle school for several problems, which staff wouldn't not even entertain my solution for.
1; bullying.
Bullying has been a large problem at this school, I have personally spoken to staff about this issue, their solution is to interview both parties. This makes the person being bullied feel guilty. I have experienced this and every time, the rather incompetent management fails to come up with a solution, even when possible solutions have been made.
2; importance on grades
This school could care less about anything but grades, grades are absolutely everything teachers place importance on. This makes school terrible for students
3; Terrible band & Orchestra program.
The band and orchestra program is horrible in this school. The main band director is absolutely the worst human you can work with, not just my experience but with other students as well. The band director shuns you and refuses to make any changes to your placements even with recommendations from private teachers. The orchestra is similar in this regard.

I have been a student at EMMS for the past three years and have been bullied all three years. The teachers and counselors I have seen have done nothing to improve my experience at the school, as well as they havenÂ’t helped me with educational stuff. I have also seen some very disturbing and inappropriate things go on at this school and get called very derogatory terms every single day. Furthermore, my standardized testing scores have only been going down since I came here.

I got to do a lot of cool things in this school like First Lego Leage. It was really fun and all the teachers were amazing. The band program is also pretty advanced with 4 band during the school day plus jazz band and percussion ensemble. Overall great school.

If it was focused on developing these characteristics, it would do an assessment of all children entering the school from other states to make sure they were appropriately placed to ensure these things at appropriate levels.

I heard good things about this school and enrolled my son. It's safe and all, which is important, but I'm deeply disappointed in it. My son excelled at math and when we moved here from California, the school placed him in an average math class and when I told the teacher he needed to be moved because he wasn't challenged, she discouraged it. However, a few months later I get a call from her stating issues... which were a result of him being bored. He basically lost a year in math and is not interested in it anymore. Now I'm paying for him to get back where he used to be when the whole purpose of us moving into this area and paying the cost to live here was for the great reputation of the school. HUGE disappointment.
